My Hero Academia seemed like it was going to sideline Izuku Midoriya after a massive injury, and the newest chapter of the series is setting up Deku's return to the final fight! Things have taken a terrible turn in the final fight against Tomura Shigaraki as Deku's plan to connect with him within his mind technically did work but not in the way Deku was hoping. While Deku was able to figure out why Shigaraki was on such a path to destruction, this ended up weakening Shigaraki to the point that All For One was fully able to take control of his body.

Getting thrown out of Shigaraki's mind revealed that All For One now had fully control of the body, and Deku was left without both of his arms as they had been destroyed by his direct contact with Shigaraki's Decay. This seemed like it would be the end for Deku in this final fight, but the newest chapter has already flipped things around is Deku is on the way back to the fight thanks to Eri's Rewind power. It's just a matter of figuring out how well he's going to be able to fight now.

My Hero Academia: Deku Recovers His Arms

My Hero Academia Chapter 420 reveals that before Shota Aizawa warped to Deku's side in the previous chapter, Eri actually broke off her horn and gave it to Aizawa to help Deku. It was explained that while the power within the horn itself was minimal, and would only be able to rewind a couple of minutes at the most, this turned out to be just what Deku needed as he hasn't been without his arms for that long (as time passed by at a different pace within Shigaraki's mind).

When Aizawa touches Deku with Eri's horn, the Rewind quirk starts to slowly build back Deku's arms. The chapter comes to an end as it teases it's going to be a slow process of bringing them back, but it's clear that Deku will soon be able to fight with the rest of Class 1-A as they poise for the real final fight against All For One. But without One For All's power, Deku's place in this final fight is still a mystery.

Jujutsu Kaisen Cosplay Puts Wild Spin on Nobara's Worst Moment https://comicbook.com/anime/news/jujutsu-kaisen-nobara-death-cosplay-anime/ Tue, 16 Apr 2024 00:40:00 +0000 Nick Valdez 7fe25c36-009b-4922-9b32-7f682e96914a

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 really put all of the characters through the wringer, and a hilarious cosplay is putting a new spin on Nobara Kugisaki's worst moment in the anime yet! Jujutsu Kaisen's anime adapted the Shibuya Incident arc and it was the most devastating in the series to date as many characters lost their lives or took major injuries over the course of big fights throughout the episodes. It was definitely much worse for some than others, and fans are still left in limbo with the fate of some of the key fan favorites at season's end.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 had Nobara's worst moment when she was struck by Mahito, and seemed to be taken out for good. It's yet to be fully confirmed whether or not she truly has died (and it's a mystery that's actually still yet to be revealed in Gege Akutami's original manga either), so all fans have to go on is her distressing final appearance with both the anime and manga. But artist Low Cost Cosplay has shared a wild twist on this image with some very creative Nobara cosplay. Check it out:

What's Next for Jujutsu Kaisen?

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 has been announced to be in the works, but has yet to give an update on its potential release window or date as of the time of publication. Nobara won't be seen much in the next season, but you can revisit all of her big moments so far with the first two seasons of the TV anime and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie now streaming with Crunchyroll ahead of the new episodes.

They tease the anime as such, "Yuji Itadori is a boy with tremendous physical strength, though he lives a completely ordinary high school life. One day, to save a classmate who has been attacked by curses, he eats the finger of Ryomen Sukuna, taking the curse into his own soul. From then on, he shares one body with Ryomen Sukuna. Guided by the most powerful of sorcerers, Satoru Gojo, Itadori is admitted to Tokyo Jujutsu High School, an organization that fights the curses... and thus begins the heroic tale of a boy who became a curse to exorcise a curse, a life from which he could never turn back."

My Hero Academia Reveals Eri's Most Selfless Gift https://comicbook.com/anime/news/my-hero-academia-characters-eri-power-sacrifice/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 23:29:00 +0000 Nick Valdez f8a82ca6-c272-46dc-9d90-e4d8f2d82243

My Hero Academia is now in the midst of a major twist of the final battle in the manga overall, and the newest chapter surprised with Eri's most selfless gift yet! Eri has been a very important character to the franchise ever since she was introduced during the events of the Shie Hassaikai arc, and it's been teased that her Rewind quirk would eventually play some kind of role in the finale given that she has the power to literally rewind a person's body. Now it's finally time for all of this to come to pass as the final battle is here.

My Hero Academia saw Izuku Midoriya fighting his hardest against Tomura Shigaraki, and previous chapters of the series teased that Eri was somehow looking to help Deku win this final battle. But while she's being kept far from the main battlefield itself, the newest chapter reveals a way that Eri found to actually help Deku when he was most in need as she's selflessly given up her horn (at the possible risk to her quirk's power) in order to rewind Deku's body just in time.

My Hero Academia 420: Eri's Broken Horn Explained

My Hero Academia Chapter 420 goes back a bit before Shota Aizawa warped to the battlefield where Deku and All For One are fighting, and Deku had completely lost both of his arms. Eri runs up to Aizawa and says that while she can't go to the battlefield, she wants to help and hands him her broken off horn. She figured out how to detach her horn, and Aizawa worries that she's damaged her quirk for good as a result. But while she couldn't help All Might or Bakugo, she knows she can help Deku.

It's explained that the power within Eri's horn is nearly useless and will only rewind someone a couple of minutes at the most, but when made contact with Deku's body, it starts to restore his lost arms as it's just the perfect amount of time to go back. While Deku heals his body, Eri's power came in handy at just the right time as it's time for the true final fight to begin.

New Primal Promo Sparks Buzz Over Season 3 https://comicbook.com/anime/news/primal-season-3-theory-adult-swim-promo/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 22:57:00 +0000 Nick Valdez 08a33fc9-c16b-41c1-ba11-6b041ec2b6ad

Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal is currently in the works on returning to Adult Swim for Season 3, and a new promo has sparked some major theories about what the new season could be tackling! Primal Season 2 ended with a pretty definitive ending for Spear and Fang's story after two seasons of surviving the wilderness together, so there was a question as to whether or not there could be future seasons of the animated series. When a third season was announced last Summer, it started getting fans wondering about what new characters and stories the series is going to tell from here on out.

While it has been some time since Primal Season 3 has been announced, Adult Swim has not shared many updates on the production. Adult Swim recently debuted a new promo featuring Primal, and while these promos usually don't necessarily tie into the canon or tease future events, the increased focus on Lord Darlington from the Season 2 episode, "The Primal Theory" has fans wondering if we'll not only see the character again but whether or not he's truly a descendant of Spear's bloodline given how the promo evolves. Check it out below as spotted by Swimpedia on X.

What to Know for Primal Season 3

Primal Season 3 has yet to announce a release window or date as of the time of this publication, nor have any concrete story details been revealed for the new episodes. There's a chance we could follow one of Spear's descendants, or new characters altogether given the range of Primal's timeline in its narrative. Series creator Genndy Tartakovsky did tease last year that he had a "spectacular" idea for the new season in an interview with ComicBook.com.

"I have something in mind that is so spectacular I cannot wait to do it, and we're trying to figure out how to do it," Tartakovsky revealed. "It's a brand new world, but I'm so into it. I think everybody's going to love it. It's a very natural progression without giving anything away, but I've got more things for the Primal world and I cannot wait to do more." Could this mean more of Lord Darlington?

Astro Royale Debut Marks a Solid Start for Shonen Jump https://comicbook.com/anime/news/astro-royale-manga-ken-wakui-shonen-jump/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 22:28:00 +0000 Nick Valdez 19f9a035-441d-4aed-8bdc-1725c6a03c67

Astro Royale, the newest series from Tokyo Revengers creator Ken Wakui, has made a pretty strong debut with Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. Tokyo Revengers ended with Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine back in 2022, and had quite the divisive ending among fans as it continued to twist around its central time travel conceit until it warped into a happy ending for all of the characters involved. But while this ending and last few arcs seemed to push fans away, the thought of Wakui starting his next series was still a promising one as it seems he's got another great starting idea.

Astro Royale is Wakui's brand new manga series and the creator's debut with Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. The first chapter has officially made its release around the world, and introduced fans to a much different kind of world than seen with Tokyo Revengers. Rather than the science fiction twist of the previous delinquent series, Astro Royale is promising a Yakuza influenced fight for control with the use of special powers granted by a falling meteor.

What Is Astro Royale?

Astro Royale introduces fans to Hibaru Yotsurugi, the only blood related son of the Yotsurugi Family, a Yakuza group. He has 12 adopted siblings that his father had taken in over the years for various reasons, and these siblings respected Hibaru's father so much that they also pitching in with the gang's work with their own factions and bonds. When Hibaru's father dies, he tells Hibaru that he wants him to lead the Yotsurugi family with his brother Terasu supporting him.

Hibaru instead tells the rest of the family that Terasu was chosen as the successor, because he knows that the gang would have split up if Hibaru was chosen. He wants to be a Yakuza with pure ideals like his father, but it's clearly not what the rest of the family wants. When a meteor shower comes and Hibaru and Terasu make wishes on them, Hibaru wishes to become the strongest Yakuza ever.

Hibaru then discovers he's gotten powers (dubbed "Astro") in his arm along with many others in the family who get special powers of their own. Now begins a fight for power and control within the family utilizing these wild new abilities from the meteor. If you wanted to check out Astro Royale's first chapter, you can find it with Viz Media's digital Shonen Jump library.

One Piece Shares Unseen Pre-Release Art by Eiichiro Oda https://comicbook.com/anime/news/one-piece-manga-first-sketches/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 22:03:00 +0000 Megan Peters 64f16e44-97f6-4971-8693-af8b8e8de758

One Piece made its mark on the world decades ago, and its spot is only growing. Eiichiro Oda never could have seen how big the series would become, but these days, One Piece runs the scene. Now, the artist is giving fans a never-before-seen look at its early days, and we have Netflix's Monsters anime to thank.

If you will recall, Netflix brought Monsters to life in an anime with help from Oda. The show is set within the One Piece universe as it takes us back to the day of Ryuma. Soon, the anime will get a Blu-ray release in Japan, and a new promo confirms the bundle will house pre-series artwork of One Piece.

As you can see above, the Monsters Blu-ray preview puts One Piece on the spot. Of course, it features some early sketches Oda did of Ryuma while crafting Monsters, but that is not all. We are also shown pre-serialization illustrations of Sanji, Zoro, Luffy, and more. Nami is also pictured in the shot, so you can see Oda was honing in the Straw Hats long before One Piece was released.

We have been shown pre-series illustrations of One Piece before, but it never fails to thrill fans when new art surfaces. Oda is sitting on a treasure trove of history that fans cannot even fathom. Thanks to Monsters, we're getting a new look at how One Piece came together decades ago. So if you fancy yourself a One Piece historian, you best listen up!

If you are not caught up on all things One Piece, the series is easy to find these days. The manga is ongoing, and it can be really weekly on the Shonen Jump app. As for the anime, One Piece has kickstarted its final act on Crunchyroll and Netflix. So for more info on the series, you can read its official synopsis below:

"As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by listening to the tales of the buccaneer "Red-Haired" Shanks. But Luffy's life changed when he accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit and gained the power to stretch like rubber...at the cost of never being able to swim again! Years later, still vowing to become the king of the pirates, Luffy sets out on his adventure...one guy alone in a rowboat, in search of the legendary "One Piece," said to be the greatest treasure in the world..."

Invincible Renewed for Seasons 4 and 5: Report https://comicbook.com/anime/news/invincible-season-4-season-5/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 22:03:00 +0000 Megan Peters dbbf0269-9e1a-4194-9e62-c324e90bfe39

Superhero fatigue has become a popular topic of conversation in Hollywood, but projects like Invincible are pushing back against the narrative. The animated series has become a mega-hit for Amazon, and its growth isn't slowing down. With two seasons on hand, Amazon is already looking to expand Invincible with a third season run. And now, reports have surfaced that Invincible is planning two more seasons beyond that.

The report comes from Republic as the site launched a new investment opportunity in tandem with Invincible. The creators of Invincible are working within Skybound to create a AAA video game set in the superhero universe. The investment pitch has earned lots of attention, and the page's Q&A suggests Invincible has locked in an order for season four and season five.

At this time, Amazon has not said anything official about Invincible beyond season three. The company made a two-season order on Invincible in the wake of season one. However, given the show's success, it is easy to see Amazon moving ahead with Invincible for the foreseeable future.

After all, Invincible season two has been a solid with its fans and critics alike. With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 100%, Invincible has become must-watch television. The show houses a stacked cast including Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, and J.K. Simmons to start. And with Amazon MGM Studios backing the show alongside Skybound, you can see why fans are confident this report about Invincible are spot on.

If you are not caught up with Invincible, no sweat! You can read its original comic by Robert Kirkman courtesy of Image Comics. As for the TV series, seasons one and two are streaming now on Amazon. So for more info on the series, you can read the official synopsis of Invincible below:

"When Mark Grayson inherits superpowers at seventeen, it's a dream come true - until he learns that being a hero isn't as black and white as the comic books he read as a kid."

Donald Glover Is Developing an Anime with Comedian Zack Fox https://comicbook.com/anime/news/donald-glover-anime-zack-fox/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 22:03:00 +0000 Megan Peters d34c8dd2-887b-4809-b140-b7237597281b

These days, anime is getting its due. The industry has become a force to reckon with as streaming has turned anime into an entertainment juggernaut. From original series to anticipated adaptations, the field is staying busy. And thanks to Donald Glover, we know the actor is developing his own anime with help from comedian Zack Fox.

The confession comes from Glover himself as the star chatted about his latest projects on GILGA Radio Show. It was there Glover confirmed the title of Childish Gambino's final album, and when asked about the future, Glover revealed he is working on an anime.

So far, we know little about the project other than it is an anime with Glover and Fox at the helm. Given the pair's work, netizens are hoping the anime has a comedic angle to it. Glover is renowned for its comedy whether it be on film or through standup. And of course, Fox got his start in comedy by doing standup around Atlanta, Georgia.

This new anime project is catching some by surprise, but Glover isn't the only Hollywood star pursuing anime. Michael B. Jordan made waves a few years ago as he teamed with Rooster Teeth to create Gen:Lock. The anime earned solid reviews from fans and critics alike. With two seasons under its belt, Gen:Lock's future is up in the air given the recent fate of Rooster Teeth. The production company announced it was folding under Warner Bros. Discovery, but Rooster Teeth announced it was looking to sell assets like Gen:Lock to interested buyers.

While Glover works on his anime behind the scenes, the actor is staying busy with other projects. Not long ago, Glover earned praise for his role in the TV reboot of Mr. & Mrs. Smith with Maya Erskine. Glover is also set to work on Lando, a new Star Wars series under Disney+, as well as a parody biopic of 21 Savage.

What do you think about this reveal from Glover? Let us know what you think in the comments below as well as on Twitter and Instagram. You can also hit me up @MeganPetersCB to share your take!

One Piece's live-action series had a massively popular debut with Netflix last year, and the series has now made it full circle with the win of a major Writers Guild Award! One Piece was one of Netflix's most popular TV show releases of 2023 overall, and it proved to be such a hit that it was no surprise to see the series announce that a second season was in the works shortly after the first season hit. While fans are waiting to see what's next, the live-action series is still getting some major recognition from its peers.

Netflix's One Piece was one of the many series nominated for a Writers Guild Award in the Children's Episodic, Long Form, and Specials category alongside series such as Sweet Tooth, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Goosebumps, and American Born Chinese, and it ended up winning the category with showrunners Matt Owens and Steven Maeda getting the WGA Award for the year for the premiere episode of the series, "Romance Dawn." Shogun: It's Always Sunny's Rob McElhenney Reacts to Fans Thinking He Cameoed in Show https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/shogun-its-always-sunnys-rob-mcelhenney-cameo-episode-8-explained/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 21:18:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 7174ce58-ebac-4bc9-93a0-1cabd9d307be

It's Always Sunny In Edo - or is it? Has the gang really gone to Feudal-era Japan?

In one of TV crossovers we never thought we'd see, the worlds of FX's Shogun and FXX's It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia collided over the weekend. The whole thing started with Sunny creator, writer, star, and producer Rob McElhenney had a post go viral on social media. The post showed a character from FX's Sh?gun - General Tomono, played by actor Hitoshi Masaki - who looked eerily similar to what Rob McElhenney would look like, if he tried to dress up like a Feudal Japanese lord.

The post from McElhenney quickly went viral, as fans speculated about whether or not McElhenney was making a sneak cameo in Sh?gun, or whether this is was just a case of twin syndrome that was delightfully uncanny. Masaki quickly jumped in to verify it was him in the scene that McElhenney posted, but that hasn't stopped the Internet from continuing to have fun with the idea fo Rob McElhenney having a role in Sh?gun. From It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia-style episode titles ("The Gang Goes to Feudal Japan") to famous quotes from Sunny being re-applied in the context of Sh?gun... it's a pretty funny thread to fall into - especially if you're a fan of both shows.

Will Sh?gun Get Season 2?

(Photo: FX / Hulu)

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia has achieved the milestone of being the longest-running live-action sitcom of all time, heading into Season 17 (at the time of writing this). Sh?gun, meanwhile, is based on a 1975 novel by author James Clavell, and it's a major question whether FX and Hulu/Disney will choose to keep the show going beyond the source material.

ComicBook.com got to speak with Sh?gun editors Maria Gonzales and Aika Miyake and ask them directly what they know about Season 2 of Sh?gun:

"I definitely feel very proud of the work that we've done and very satisfied with the show as is," Gonzales said. "At the time of completing, when we were done cutting, there wasn't really any mention of, or any serious plans about a Season 2. And I think that's kind of where we're at still. I'm not sure if it will happen. Obviously, it's out of our hands [laughs]; we're the last people [to know]."

"Personally, I want to see Season 2!" Miyake added. "I have no idea."

"There's definitely plenty to build on, for sure," Gonzales continued. "All these characters were given their due, and it really feels like the show could keep living in that respect. It was really well done."

Would you like to see Sh?gun continue after Season 1? Let us know in the comments! The series is streaming on Hulu - as is It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

Monarch: Kurt Russell Admits He Had to Up His Game Acting Against His Son https://comicbook.com/anime/news/monarch-kurt-russell-wyatt-russell-acting/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 20:57:00 +0000 Nick Valdez d7dd1e60-eb9e-437a-96c7-ec23c44801e0

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters featured the father and son duo of Kurt and Wyatt Russell playing the same character, and it turns out Kurt Russell felt like he needed to up his own acting game after seeing his son in action! Monarch: Legacy of Monsters introduced the two Russells as Lee Shaw, a U.S. Army colonel who was involved with the early investigations into Godzilla and other Titans, and years later ended up playing a much different role in the series. It was a fun twist as fans got to see the father and son playing the same character at different times, and the actors themselves got to inject it with a competitive energy.

Speaking with Deadline, it was explained that both Russells worked with different crews and different schedules during the production of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and the parallel work schedule allowed Kurt to see more of his son Wyatt in action, "We were doing two different crews and I said, 'I'm going to go check out and see Wyatt's group was doing,' " Kurt began. "It was fascinating for me because for the first time, this is my son - I'd known him all my life. He knew me his life, I was an actor."

Monarch: Kurt Russell Reveals Dynamic With Wyatt Russell

Continuing further, Kurt explained, "I'd watched him before and I'd been on sets of his and stuff, but in an appreciative sort of way. Now I was suddenly watching this character be laid down that I was going to be the other half of much later in life. And it was really fascinating." Elaborating, Kurt then explained that his own acting chops had to be raised for this as well, "I found myself watching this actor and I remember thinking, 'F*ck, man - this guy's good. I better get my game going here, because this can't fall down when it gets to my part of it."

As Kurt explained, the two Russells ended up collaborating on developing Lee Shaw as a more fleshed out character, ""When we came on, it was just a casting idea: Lee Shaw was in the maybe three or four shows that were being talked about at the time, was really a fifth or sixth character," Kurt revealed. "So we had to come up with a reason why Wyatt and I were going to do the show." Continuing further, "We thought it would be an interesting challenge to maybe do something that would help explain or be very indicative to the audience about what it was we were trying to do with Monarch," Kurt explained. "It was really the only place where Wyatt and I got to work together, because that was where we worked on what it was that that Lee Shaw was going to be. It was a lot of fun."

What did you think of Kurt and Wyatt Russell as Lee Shaw in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters? Let us know all of your thoughts about it in the comments! You can even reach out to me directly about all things animation and other cool stuff @Valdezology on X (formerly known as Twitter)!

New Demon Slayer Game Potentially Leaked https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/demon-slayer-new-game-leak/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 20:30:00 +0000 Tyler Fischer a9e0fc4a-3c2d-4bde-a199-d34ec64a43d2

A new Demon Slayer game has potentially leaked from an insider who has recently and historically been quite reliable. Unfortunately, details on the project are scarce and there is no accompanying media. The leak specifically comes the way of Midori over on X, a source usually known for Sega leaks, especially as they pertain to Atlus and the Persona series.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Midori relayed word that a sequel to Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles is in the works. No platforms are mentioned, but it's safe to assume PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S are going to be the platforms at minimum. The previous game also came to PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, but this was in 2019. As a result, it is not as safe to assume these platforms are in the plan as they will be all quite dated by the time this game comes, whenever it comes out.

As for Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles, for those unfamiliar, it is a fighting game meets action-adventure game released by Sega and CyberConnect2 back in 2019. As of March this year, it has sold 3.5 million copies, which is no doubt why it is getting a sequel. Meanwhile, its critical reception was all over the place, with scores ranging from 69 to 82, depending on the platform.

"Become the blade that destroys demons," reads an official blurb about the first game. "Relive memorable moments from the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba anime through the eyes of its protagonist, Tanjiro Kamado! Follow the story from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Tanjiro Kamado, Unwavering Resolve Arc-where Tanjiro joins the Demon Slayer Corps- to Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train featuring the Flame Hashira, Kyojuro Rengoku! Face off against demons from the anime series with stunning graphical effects faithfully recreating iconic battle techniques in full 3D! Choose from a cast of 24 fighters, including not only protagonists like Tanjiro Kamado and Nezuko Kamado, but demons like Rui (Lower Five of the Twelve Kizuki) and Akaza (Upper Three of the Twelve Kizuki). Pit your favorite characters against each other and enjoy never-before-seen matchups!"

As always, take this leak with a grain of salt. While the source in question has proven reliable in the past it doesn't change the fact this isn't official information. Further, even if this information is accurate, it doesn't mean it will remain accurate over time as everything is subject to change.

Velma Season 2 Trailer Released https://comicbook.com/anime/news/velma-season-2-trailer/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 20:25:00 +0000 Nick Valdez 17324feb-a17c-4d40-83b6-1aeb2730fbfa

Velma will be making its return with Season 2 of the animated series later this month, and fans have gotten the first look at what to expect from the new episodes with its first trailer! Velma premiered to a divisive response among animation fans due to how differently of an experience it was from the original Scooby-Doo franchise it was inspired by, and it led to the series getting a whole new kind of buzz of its own as many rushed to the series to see what all of the talk was about (positive or otherwise). Now Season 2 will finally be following it all up.

Velma Season 2 was quickly confirmed to be in the works shortly after the release of the first season, and while that did have a divisive response from fans online of its own, it's time to finally see the new wave of episodes in action. Velma Season 2 will be making its debut later this month, and Max has dropped the very first trailer for this next batch of episodes showcasing how Velma's life has changed since the bloody mystery in the first season. Check it out below:

How to Watch Velma Season 2

Velma Season 2 will be premiering with Max on April 25th. The new season will be running for ten episodes in total, and Charlie Grandy returns as executive producer with Charlie Grandy Productions alongside Mindy Kaling, Howard Klein of 3 Arts Entertainment, and Elijah Aron. Jessica Kumai Scott serves as co-executive producer, Amy Winfrey as supervising producer, Kandace Reuter and Rick Williams as producers, and Warner Bros. Animation serves as the production studio. The new season will introduce more guest stars such as Russell Peters, Melissa Fumero, Sarayu Blue, Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes, Cherry Jones, Frank Welker, Nicole Byer, Gary Cole, Andia Winslow, and Sara Ramirez.

As for what to expect from the new episodes, Velma teases its new season as such, "When an even spookier mystery grips Crystal Cove, Velma (Mindy Kaling) must find a way to balance her detective work with the demands of her newfound popularity before it's too late. Meanwhile, her faithful friends Daphne (Constance Wu), Norville (Sam Richardson), and Fred (Glenn Howerton) are powerless to help thanks to their own personal battles and worse... Detention."

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off Creator Isn't a Fan of Streaming Dumps https://comicbook.com/anime/news/scott-pilgrim-takes-off-streaming-weekly-binge/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 19:52:00 +0000 Megan Peters 8fae6e39-6999-437e-8077-433804fcb2d2

Last fall, the world was reintroduced to the world of Scott Pilgrim, and the show was like nothing we've seen before. The IP jumped to Netflix with help of series creator Bryan Lee O'Malley at the helm. They teamed with BenDavid Grabinski to bring Scott Pilgrim into the world of anime. And following its binge debut, Grabinski is hashing out their distaste of streaming's dumpy schedule.

Taking to X (Twitter), Grabinski confessed they were hardly a fan of how streaming services like Netflix tend to release show and seasons all at once. "As someone who had his whole season drop all at once at the same time, it's the dumbest sh-t ever. There's literally no upside. Imagine if the whole season of X-MEN 97 was out," they posted.

Continuing, the show creator revealed they wanted Scott Pilgrim Takes Off to have a slow release. Grabinski said he would have liked Netflix to release two episodes for a four-week run. But in the end, the streaming service chose to launch the whole season at once.

Of course, it seems Grabinski was hardly a fan of the release schedule, and he is far from the only person icked by the format. In the past decade, netizens have become more critical of how TV series are released online. From Disney+ to Amazon and Hulu, some series find themselves hit with weekly releases while others are dumped all at once or even in batches. The inconsistency seems to have rankled consumers as the war between big binges and weekly updates wages on.

As for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the award-winning anime earned solid praise upon launch, but Grabinski believes the show would've sustained conversation online if it released slower. Other anime series have suffered similar fates as Netflix such as JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean. But thanks to recent releases like Delicious in Dungeon, there's hope Netflix has found a better schedule to release its animated projects.

Do you back weekly releases for streaming? Or does the binge method work best? Let us know what you think in the comments below as well as on Twitter and Instagram. You can also hit me up @MeganPetersCB to share your take!

Coyote vs. Acme Could Still See Release https://comicbook.com/anime/news/coyote-vs-acme-could-still-be-released-report/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 19:11:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt c3e97e74-3d68-472c-8978-15747f351ab6

Coyote vs. Acme may not be dead after all. Weeks after the screenwriter behind the hybrid live-action and animated film said the film was still being shopped around Hollywood, a new report from the New York Times suggests Warner Bros. isn't ready to give up on the picture just quite yet. According to the paper, a Warner Bros. spokesperson said reports implying the studio is looking to destroy the film in exchange for a $40 million tax write-off are "inaccurate."

The method of film cancellations has become a worrying norm for filmmakers, with studios opting to cancel films in order to receive tax benefits rather than the money the film could make at the box office.

"As far as I know, it's ongoing. I think we're all pretty heartbroken about it. We hope it will somehow find its home and not end up stuck in a vault for the rest of time. That would be a great resolution," writer Samy Burch said last year. "I know that they have been screening places and I think they still are. I hope that I'm allowed to say that. I'm going completely rogue here. It's just the best group of people. Dave Green, who directed it, I just love so much. Will Forte is amazing in the movie. I've seen the final cut of the completed film and I'm very proud of it."

Coyote vs. Acme director Dave Green echoed the sentiment on a social media post of his own, late last year.

"For three years, I was lucky enough to make a movie about Wile E. Coyote, the most persistent, passionate, and resilient character of all time. I was surrounded by a brilliant team, who poured their souls into this project for years. We were all determined to honor the legacies of these historic characters and actually get them right," Green shared on social media. "Along the ride, we were embraced by test audiences who rewarded us with fantastic scores. I am beyond proud of the final product, and beyond devastated by WB's decision. But in the spirit of Wile E. Coyote, resilience and persistence win the day."

Burch wrote the screenplay from a story by James Gunn and Jeremy Slater. The film starred John Cena as the head of Acme, Will Forte as Wile E. Coyote's lawyer, and Deadly Class star Lana Condor in an undisclosed role.

My Hero Academia Sneaks In Special Nod to Creator's Last Manga https://comicbook.com/anime/news/my-hero-academia-manga-barrage-easter-egg/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 18:53:00 +0000 Megan Peters a635aaf2-1e7d-4851-abc2-262d8682ce72

My Hero Academia has put Kohei Horikoshi on the map. The artist went from being a fan of Shonen Jump to one of its biggest creators. These days, My Hero Academia has manga readers pressed as its final act is heating up. And thanks to a new update, fans were treated to a look back at Horikoshi's last manga.

The reference came in the midst of My Hero Academia chapter 420 as Aizawa began recruiting more heroes to the battlefield. During the run, Aizawa encounter a slew of pros, current and former, and that is where Astro from Barrage was shown.

The character is seen offering up his services to Aizawa in the war, and Eraser Head is quick to accept. Some fans may have assumed the scene was one of good will, but Horikoshi put more into. After all, the hero shown before Aizawa hails from Barrage, the manga Horikoshi published in 2012.

The character's name is Astro, and they are the lead of Barrage. He is impossible to mistake given his perfectly styled hair, after all. This homage to Barrage marks a first in My Hero Academia has Horikoshi doesn't often look back on his own works. The manga features tons of comic book easter eggs and Star Wars nods, but Barrage is a first for Horikoshi.

If you are not familiar with Barrage, the series ran in 2011 under Shueisha just three years before My Hero Academia launched. The series launched in full a year later, and it tells the story of Astro, a young man from the slums of Industria. Barrage travels the slums looking for more to life when he encounters the prince of Industria who looks just like him. And after a series of events, Astro becomes the planet's prince much to the suspicion of enemy aliens.

Sadly, Barrage lasted two volumes before being cut by Shonen Jump. The world of manga is cutthroat, but eventually, Horikoshi found his big break. My Hero Academia is considered one of the biggest shonen series to ever launch under Shueisha. From its manga to its anime, My Hero Academia's reach is massive, so it feels good seeing Barrage make a cameo in its final act.

Did you catch this My Hero Academia reference...? Let us know what you think in the comments below as well as on Twitter and Instagram. You can also hit me up @MeganPetersCB to share your take!

Detective Conan Shocks Fans by Obliterating One of Its Top Ships https://comicbook.com/anime/news/detective-conan-anime-romance-ship/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 18:08:00 +0000 Megan Peters 19c2ea19-4a93-4f37-a2fa-f82404b1c53d

Detective Conan makes no apologies for how big it has become. Over the past decades, creator Gosho Aoyama has kept a tight vision for the series, and its thrilling tale has earned fans the world over. In Asia, Detective Conan has been a massive hit since day one, and the series is starting to get its due stateside. But for new fans, well - they are a little confused as to why Detective Conan diehards are irate over a recent ship sinking.

The whole thing came to light this year as Detective Conan put forward its 27th film. The feature is now screening in Japan and breaking box office records. Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Pentagram puts Kaito and Conan to the test as sleuths. And before the movie ends, we learn one of the series' most popular ships has been incestual this whole time.

As it turns out, Kaito and Shinichi are related and rather closely. The two are first cousins as their fathers were actually twins. Separated from birth and adopted, the two men had families of their own. Kaito and Shinichi did not know about their familial tie until now, and as you can imagine, the fandom is quaking. The Kaishin ship is one of the biggest in Detective Conan, and some fans have been loyal to the ship for decades now.

When it comes to romances and ships, things are never easy with fans, but this Detective Conan reveal has caught the Internet by surprise. Kaishin is a pretty prevalent thing in the Detective Conan fanbase. Now, the community is reeling from the movie's reveal, and it is hard to fault the reaction.

If you are not familiar with Detective Conan, the series is ongoing both in print and on screen. You can watch much of the TV anime on Crunchyroll as well as Tube and Amazon Prime. So for those wanting to know more about thrilling anime, you can read its official synopsis below:

"Jimmy Kudo's the best detective on the beat, and his skills have earned him deadly enemies. When an assassination attempt transforms Jimmy into a little kid, he uses his new cover to track down his assailants as boy detective Conan Edogawa!"

Pokemon Leak Finds New Evidence of Missing Pokemon From Sun and Moon https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/pokemon-sun-and-moon-3ds-celesteela/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 17:13:00 +0000 Tyler Fischer 8c357266-b56d-49a5-a25f-69424e6b301e

A Pokemon dataminer has discovered new evidence of a missing Pokemon from Pokemon Sun and Moon that was supposed to be in the pair of 3DS games but was scrapped during development for some reason. It has been eight years since Pokemon Sun and Moon were released by Game Freak and Nintendo. That said, they have not been forgotten. And like any Pokemon game, Sun and Moon introduced plenty of new Pokemon for players to catch, battle, and cherish. One of the Pokemon it introduced, for example, is the very adorable Celesteela. As you may know, Celesteela doesn't evolve or have any other forms, but this wasn't always the case.

Between the anime and previous leaks, we more or less already knew about this, but new evidence of another form of Celesteela has been discovered. The leak was found by X user ElChicoEevee, who found two different cries for Celesteela while digging through the files of Pokemon Home. Interestingly, one is labelled as Form 01 as a Bulbasaur cry. There are also apparently references to this other form in the files of Pokemon Rumble Rush, the 2019 mobile game.

It is possible this work will be salvaged in a future game, as we know Game Freak is fond of revisiting Pokemon and giving them various forms and new evolutions as time passes. Until then, Pokemon fans will simply have to imagine what this other form of the humanoid Ultra Beast would have been like. In the meantime, take this all with a grain of salt. This is a leak, not official information from the mouth of Game Freak or Nintendo. Neither has ever commented on the Celesteela scuttlebutt, and we don't expect that to change now, but if it does, we will be sure to update the story accordingly.

Disney's Manga Princess Cafe Announced https://comicbook.com/anime/news/disney-manga-princess-cafe-anime/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 15:46:00 +0000 Megan Peters 233d08f3-1295-4319-98bf-0b928b7f7fa5

Over the decades, Disney has accumulated a ton of princesses. From OGs like Snow White to recent additions like Elsa, the company has a monopoly on all things princess. Now, Disney is celebrating some of its more famous royals with a new event, and Manga Princess Cafe has left fans enamored.

The big Disney event was announced just recently as the company will give five princesses a manga makeover. Belle, Ariel, Snow White, Tiana, and Cinderella are set to join the Manga Princess Cafe when it opens. The cafe collaboration will go live in Tokyo this year, and it looks beyond cute.

(Photo: Disney)

With heart-shaped rice dishes and fruity drinks, this Disney cafe hopes to bring its princesses to life like never before. Of course, fans who visit the cafe will be able to nab some sweet merch. From home goods to stickers and office supplies, Disney is going all in on its manga princesses. So if you want to check out the Manga Princess Cafe, it will open its doors on April 26th before closing June 9th. You can book dining reservations now as Oh My Cafe anticipates the cafe collaboration will be in high demand.

Obviously, this princess makeover has piqued the interest of Disney fans and manga readers alike. The cafe has given some of Disney's most iconic heroines shojo makeovers, but this isn't the first time the company has leaned into manga. In fact, Disney has a long history with the genre. From Beauty & the Beat to Stitch and Frozen, Disney has published a number of manga series through TokyoPop and Viz Media. So hopefully, this cafe event puts those adorable series center stage with readers.

Plus, Disney is expanding its interest in manga outside the realm of adaptations. It is looking ahead to anime as the medium has become a global phenomenon thanks to streaming. Disney+ has invested heavily in anime with exclusive licenses like Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, and the company has formed partnerships with publishers like Kodansha to develop future titles.

Durarara Writer Hopes to End Hiatus Soon After Nearly a Decade https://comicbook.com/anime/news/durarara-manga-anime-hiatus/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 14:33:00 +0000 Megan Peters e56760cb-260f-481b-81c3-8c80160134e9

It has been a hot minute since Durarara has come around with any updates. The urban fantasy dates back to 2004 courtesy of its light novels, and it didn't take long for writer Ryohgo Narita to kickstart a manga under Square Enix. With a hit anime on hand, Durarara has a soft spot in the hearts of netizens across the globe. Now, it seems Durarara is eyeing its ongoing hiatus as Narita admits they'd like to resume the series ASAP.

The confession comes from social media as Narita celebrated a special Durarara promo in Tokyo. Taking to X (Twitter), the writer said they're sorry for the long delay, but Narita is hopeful the franchise can resume before much longer.

"Animate has opened a special Durarara shop! I'm very sorry I haven't been able to work much since I was diagnosed with an incurable disease, but ... I plan to resume work on my series including [Durarara], so I looked forward to your continued support."

Of course, Narita has been focused on their health in the years since Durarara went on hiatus. In 2017, the writer announced they were dealing with a chronic health condition that impacted their immune system. The illness confirmed Narita's decision to take a hiatus from Durarara. The writer has worked here and there on other titles, but Durarara has remained shelved for years at this point. But if Narita has it their way, the shonen series will return with new content soon.

If you are not familiar with Durarara, the light novels are available in English courtesy of Yen Press while its manga is overseen by Square Enix. You can find the Durarara anime streaming on Crunchyroll. So for those wanting more info on the series, you can read its official synopsis below:

"The Ikebukuro district in Tokyo is full of interesting people. A boy longing for the extraordinary. A hotheaded punk. An airheaded pseudo-stalker. An information broker who works for kicks. An underground doctor who specializes in truly desperate patients. A high school student infatuated with a monster. And a headless rider on a pitch-black motorcycle. Their story may not be a heartwarming one, but as it turns out, even weirdos like these sometimes fall in love."

Fairy Tail will be making its comeback later this Summer with a new anime, and the voice actor behind Gray Fullbuster is sharing their excitement for the Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest anime! It's been quite a while since Hiro Mashima's Fairy Tail manga and anime franchise came to an end, but it was far from the actual end of the series. The story has continued with an official sequel manga, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, as Natsu and the rest of the Fairy Tail guild are taking on their toughest mission yet. But soon fans will get to see this sequel with a brand new anime adaptation.

Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest will also be bringing back the main cast from the original Fairy Tail anime, and that means that each of the fan favorites will be showing off their chops in this new iteration of the franchise as well. This includes the voice actor behind Gray, Yuichi Nakamura, who shared the following message along with the confirmation that he would be reprising his role in the new sequel series, "It's been a few years since the manga and anime series ended...I've been thinking about how I only get the chance to voice Gray in games and collaborations. Now I'm embarking on another anime adventure with old friends. We have our own kind of guild behind the scenes of Fairy Tail, so all the staff will likewise be pushing forward as one."

What to Know for Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Anime

Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest will be premiering some time this July as part of the Summer 2024 anime schedule. Shinji Ishihara will be returning from the original Fairy Tail anime to serve as chief director for the sequel alongside Toshinori Watanabe directing for J.C. Staff. Atsuhiro Tomioka will be overseeing the scripts, Yurika Sako will be handling character designs, and Yasuharu Takanashi will be composing the music. Yuichi Nakamura will be returning as Gray Fullbuster alongside, Tetsuya Kakihara as Natsu Dragneel, Aya Hirano as Lucy Heartfilia, Rie Kugimiya as Happy, Satomi Satou as Wendy, Yui Hori as Charle, and Sayaka Ohara as Erza Scarlet.

If you wanted to get a jump start on the sequel before the anime makes its debut, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest has been officially licensed by Kodansha Comics. They tease the sequel series as such, "Natsu, Lucy, Happy, Erza, and the whole Fairy Tail guild are back in action! And they've decided to tackle the '100 Years Quest' - a job no one's dared take on since the founding of the guild more than a century ago. A mysterious town, a baffling spirit, a ghastly new enemy...and a brand new continent to explore. When you're with real friends, the adventures never stop!"

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War is gearing up to return to screens with its next wave of episodes some time later this year, and one awesome cosplay is ready to showcase more of Rangiku Matsumoto! Rangiku was just one of the many Soul Reapers fans had been excited to see in action again with the Bleach anime's return as it finally started an adaptation of the final arc from Tite Kubo's original manga. Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War's first two parts showcased many of these returning characters in some big fights, but fans of the manga know things are far from over.

Rangiku was one of the characters fans got to see in action again after all this time (without sequences in the present day and through flashback), and we'll be seeing much more of her as the anime continues through to its grand finale. While it's still going to be some time before we get reacquainted with how many of the Soul Reapers will be after their respective fights, at least fans are still keeping the fires warm for Rangiku ahead of her return in Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War's future episodes. Artist maywedacosplay on Instagram has brought the character to life through awesome cosplay, so check it out below!

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 3 - What to Know

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 3 - The Conflict was confirmed to be in the works following the end of the second cour of episodes, and is currently scheduled to release some time later this year. A release window or date has yet to be announced for these episodes, however, but it will be picking up with the next phase of the fight between Squad Zero and Yhwach's strongest Sternritter fighters as Ichigo Kurosaki and his group break into the Royal Palace area.

If you wanted to catch up with everything that's happened in the anime before the new episodes premiere, you can find Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War's first two parts now streaming with Hulu in the United States (and Disney+ in international territories) with both English and Japanese dubbed releases. Go! Go! Loser Ranger! has made its debut as part of the new wave of anime hitting for the Spring 2024 anime schedule, and with its latest episode has debuted its opening theme sequence! The Quintessential Quintuplets' creator Negi Haruba's original Sentai Daishikkaku manga (which some fans have coined as "Ranger Reject" online) was one of the major adaptations fans had wanted to see in motion, and the first episode of its new anime did not disappoint as fans were thrown into this twisted new take on the Tokusatsu hero genre. But that's only the beginning of what we'll see.

Go! Go! Loser Ranger!'s debut episode eschewed the traditional opening and ending theme sequences in favor of having more time spent with the story in the premiere itself, and that has been changed with Episode 2 of the new series. With the latest episode, fans got the full debut of its opening theme titled "On the Next Episode" as performed by Tatsuya Kitani. You can check out the creditless version of the opening in action below:

Where to Watch Go! Go! Loser Ranger!

Go! Go! Loser Ranger! is now airing its episodes as part of the Spring 2024 anime schedule, and will be streaming with Hulu in the United States (and Disney+ internationally). Keiichi Sato directs the new anime for Yostar Pictures with Keiichiro Ochi in charge of the series' scripts, Kahoko Koseki designing the characters, and Yoshihiro Ike composing the music. The series stars the likes of Yusuke Kobayashi as D, Daishi Kajita as Hibiki Sakurama, Yumika Yano as Yumeko Suzukiri, Yuichi Nakamura as Red Keeper, Go Inoue as Blue Keeper, Kensho Ono as Yellow Keeper, Kosuke Toriumi as Green Keeper, M.A.O as Pink Keeper, and more.

Kondansha USA has licensed Negi Haruba's original Sentai Daishikkaku manga for an English language release, and they tease the series as such, "When the Monster Army invaded Earth thirteen years ago, the Divine Dragon Rangers rose up to stop them! With the war raging on, these great heroes are mankind's Last Hope!...or are they? In truth, the invaders were subjugated within a year, forced to continue to crank out a monster a week for the Rangers to crush in front of their adoring fans! But one monster has had enough. Something has to change! He'll rebel against the might of the Dragon Rangers and destroy them all...from the inside!"

McDonald's Japan has revealed a special collaboration with Detective Conan to help promote new chicken sandwiches joining the menu, and with it debuted a special new promo showing off Detective Conan's characters trying to get to the bottom of the new mystery surrounding the sandwiches. It's another one of the fun anime collaborations McDonald's has in Japan, and goes to show that these kinds of team ups would be fun to see in other territories as well. Check out the team up promo below:

My Hero Academia Paved the Way for Anime's Recent Boom, Says Toho CEO https://comicbook.com/anime/news/my-hero-academia-anime-toho-global-popularity/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 21:36:00 +0000 Megan Peters a49d74d4-1423-4eea-a9ce-74a4507140ce

Decades ago, anime was seen as a niche interest by the world at large, but that is no longer the case. Whether in Japan or America, anime is seen as a major contender in the entertainment world. From film to television, series like Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen have become huge hits. And in a recent interview, the CEO of Toho admitted they credit My Hero Academia with revitalizing anime's global surge.

The admission came from VIPO as the publication spoke with Hiroyasu Matsuoka, the CEO of Toho. It was there the exec admitted the company really struggled to find a global foothold, but My Hero Academia shifted all of that.

"Back then, I was in charge of overseas development at the time, and global distribution companies began to talk with me daily for negotiations. They desperately wanted to get their hands on My Hero Academia. We noticed distributors were raising their offers even when their previous ones were still under review. Plus, rival companies were also entering the market and driving up the price further with impressive numbers."

Continuing, Matsuoka said the bidding war behind My Hero Academia helped Toho view its anime licensing strategies differently. "[My Hero Academia] helped us recognize the potential for anime to succeed overseas, so we began to focus on expanding our business overseas. Of course, we needed to still address the domestic market, so given how motivated we were about expanding anime overseas, we didn't miss out the current anime boom. We already had built a network, so we were able to oversee titles such as Jujutsu Kaisen, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, and The Apothecary Diaries."

As you can imagine, Toho is doing pretty well these days. Anime interest is surging globally thanks to streaming, and manga is rising just the same in sales. From Dragon Ball to My Hero Academia, the industries have welcomed their share of game changers over the years. So now, all eyes are on the future as anime committees hunt for the next big thing. Hits like Solo Leveling are on the rise, and there are other big shows like Kaiju No. 8 stirring buzz online.

Hitsuji Gondaira's Mission: Yozakura Family is the latest of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump franchises to make the jump from the magazine to screens, and is likely going to be one of the series fans keep an eye on through the rest of the jam packed Spring 2024 anime season. The first episode already took fans by surprise, and it's only getting started.

Mission: Yozakura Family's premiere caught fans by surprise by how quickly it moved forward its central romance between Taiyo and Mutsumi, but it came and went without its opening and ending. That has changed with the newest episode, however, as the opening theme is titled "Unmei-chan" as performed by Ikimonogakari, and you can check out the creditless version in the video above. Solo Leveling Dub Nails the Anime's Epic Arise Scene: Watch https://comicbook.com/anime/news/solo-leveling-anime-arise-english-dub/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 21:13:00 +0000 Megan Peters 8d218212-785d-407c-9b0e-42d5127578ba

Solo Leveling season one may be over, but the show is living on with fans this year. Despite its single cour order, the webtoon adaptation is a top contender for anime of the year. A-1 Pictures spared no expense when it came to bringing Solo Leveling to life, and now, the anime's English dub is matching levels with its epic finale.

As you can see below, the season one finale of Solo Leveling just launched dubbed, and it is nothing short of impressive. The ADR and scripting for the Crunchyroll dub has been praised since day one, and of course, Aleks Le gets special praise. The English voice actor has been crushing his role as Jinwoo, and that work came to a head in the finale.

After all, the season one finale features Jinwoo's 'Arise' scene. The moment was pivotal in the anime's original dub, so expectations for Le were high. Clearly, the actor pulled together a truly epic performance for Jinwoo, so netizens can chill about the dub's big finale.

After all, the lead actors behind Solo Leveling are consummate professionals. Taito Ban, the Japanese actor behind Jinwoo, made headlines before the anime launched as reports revealed he worked his voice hard enough to spit blood. It turns out Le followed in those footsteps as the actor confessed his throat also took a beating from the role. So as Solo Leveling pushed forward with its dub finale, there was no doubt Le was going to nail Jinwoo's 'Arise' revelation.

If you are not caught up with Solo Leveling, you can always check out its original webtoon on Tapas. As for the anime, Crunchyroll is airing all of season one, and Solo Leveling season two has already been announced. So for more info on the series, you can read its official synopsis below:

"Known as the Weakest Hunter of All Mankind, E-rank hunter Jinwoo Sung's contribution to raids amounts to trying not to get killed. Unfortunately, between his mother's hospital bills, his sister's tuition, and his own lack of job prospects, he has no choice but to continue to put his life on the line. So when an opportunity arises for a bigger payout, he takes it...only to come face-to-face with a being whose power outranks anything he's ever seen! With the party leader missing an arm and the only healer a quivering mess, can Jinwoo some-how find them a way out?"

'What do you think about the first season of Solo Leveling? Are you looking forward to season two? Let us know what you think in the comments below as well as on Twitter and Instagram. You can also hit me up @MeganPetersCB to share your take!

The Wild Robot Will Channel Hayao Miyazaki, Classic Disney Titles https://comicbook.com/anime/news/the-wild-robot-inspirations-hayao-miyazaki-disney/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 20:58:00 +0000 Nick Valdez 225aed48-6eab-43f7-ac40-00f71fd1c4ea

The Wild Robot is going to be a major adaptation for Dreamworks Animation, and the director behind it all revealed some surprising influences the new film will channel. Peter Brown's The Wild Robot has been a massive bestseller title since it first released several years ago as fans fell in love with the story of a robot who crash lands on an isolated island and learns to live in this new environment while bonding with the animals that lived there. Coming to theaters later this Fall, very little of the new film has been revealed in motion as of the time of this publication.

The Wild Robot debuted an unfinished bit of new footage during CinemaCon 2024 not long ago during Universal's presentation, (which was attended by ComicBook.com), The Wild Robot director Chris Sandlers (who was behind films such as How to Train Your Dragon, Lilo & Stitch, and more) revealed that the film takes some inspiration from classic Disney films and the legendary Studio Ghibli works from Hayao Miyazaki, even noting that the finished project has a visual style described as "a Monet painting in a Miyazaki forest."

What Is The Wild Robot?

The Wild Robot will be releasing in theaters beginning on September 20th. Written and directed by Chris Sandlers (How to Train Your Dragon, Lilo & Stitch, The Croods) and produced by Jeff Hermann (DreamWorks Animation's The Boss Baby 2: Family Business, Kung Fu Panda 3), The Wild Robot is based on Peter Brown's original novel of the same name. The film stars Lupita Nyong'o (Black Panther) as the main character, Roz, as she leads a cast that also includes the likes of Pedro Pascal as Fink and Catherine O' Hara as Pinktail.

The voice cast also includes the likes of Bill Nighy as Longneck, Kit Connor as Brightbill, Stephanie Hsu as Vontra, Mark Hamill, Matt Berry, and Ving Rhames. As for what to expect from The Wild Robot, Dreamworks Animation teases the film as such, "From DreamWorks Animation comes a new adaptation of a literary sensation, Peter Brown's beloved, award-winning, #1 New York Times bestseller, The Wild Robot. The epic adventure follows the journey of a robot--ROZZUM unit 7134, 'Roz' for short -- that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling."

Astro Royale, Shonen Jump's Newest Series, Is Now Live https://comicbook.com/anime/news/astro-royale-shonen-jump-manga-tokyo-revengers/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 20:43:00 +0000 Megan Peters 8bdd59c3-b447-43a6-ba1a-1e31c9373e77

At last, Shonen Jump has done it. The team at Shueisha just welcomed the magazine's latest issue, and it features a brand-new work by Ken Wakui. The creator of Tokyo Revengers just launched their latest manga, and Astro Royale is now available to read if you need a new series to binge.

The update, as you can see here, comes courtesy of the latest Weekly Shonen Jump issue. Astro Royale, which is also known as Negai no Astro, has launched its first chapter. Wakui's distinctive art style is impossible to overlook in this debut. Plus, it has a yankee flair that fans of Tokyo Revengers will not want to miss out on.

If you are not familiar with Astro Royale, the supernatural series puts a sci-fi spin on manga's tested yakuza trope. The series follows a powerful gang in the wake of its leader's death. With 12 adopted children vying for power, the late leader's only blood relative goes against the grain by choosing a successor. The decision leaves the gang in a tizzy, and the drama is only escalated as Tokyo is hit by a meteor shower. The event leaves the land's survivors with all-new powers including members of the yakuza gang. And as Japan reckons with the devastating meteor hit, the yakuza finds itself at war with itself.

If you want to know more about Astro Royale, the series has just started, so now is the time to check it out. You can read up on the manga's official synopsis below for all the details. And of course, you can get a feeling for Wakui's vision by checking out Tokyo Revengers as the hit Kodansha series wrapped a few years back.

"The new series from Ken Wakui, the creator of Shinjuku Swan and Tokyo Revengers! As the battle to decide the next leader of the Yotsurugi gang that runs Asakusa is heating up, a meteorite strike suddenly awakens superpowers in the people of Japan. How will Hibaru Yotsurugi, the son of the previous gang leader, come out of this?!"

One-Punch Man Movie Recruits Dan Harmon, Heather Anne Campbell https://comicbook.com/anime/news/one-punch-man-movie-dan-harmon-writers/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 18:48:00 +0000 Megan Peters 18a91661-aa38-494d-a9cc-33b26195f854

Oh, it's happening. One-Punch Man is getting a third season before long, but right now, all eyes are shifting towards its future in theaters. After all, Sony has ordered a live-action film adapted One-Punch Man with director Justin Lin onboard. And now, a new report has confirmed Dan Harmon of Rick and Morty is joining the film as writer alongside Heather Anne Campbell.

Yes, you read that right. The co-creator behind Rick and Morty is working on One-Punch Man. The writer, along with Campbell, has been brought in to rewrite the movie's script. Back in 2020, it was announced Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner were heading up the movie's script. So now, it seems the story is coming down to Harmon and Campbell.

If you are not familiar with these writers, Harmon has a long history with satire and comedy. From Community to Harmontown, the writer-producer has done it all. Of course, fans will know Harmon best for his work on Rick and Morty. He co-created the Adult Swim mega-hit in 2014 with Justin Roiland. These days, Rick and Morty is one of the top-rated comedies on television, and its eighth season is on the horizon.

As for Campbell, the writer-comedian has been in the entertainment industry for decades. From Whose Line Is It Anyway to The Eric Andre Show, Campbell is no stranger to comedy. They have also worked closely with Harmon as Campbell began writing on Rick and Morty in season six.

So far, Sony has released little information about One-Punch Man asides from its main crew. With Lin set to direct, the live-action adaptation has some big expectations hanging overhead. So if you are not familiar with One-Punch Man, you can read up on its official synopsis below:

"Nothing about Saitama passes the eyeball test when it comes to superheroes, from his lifeless expression to his bald head to his unimpressive physique. However, this average-looking guy has a not-so-average problem-he just can't seem to find an opponent strong enough to take on! Every time a promising villain appears, Saitama beats the snot out of 'em with one punch! Can he finally find an opponent who can go toe-to-toe with him and give his life some meaning? Or is he doomed to a life of superpowered boredom?"

Naruto Creator Announces Rare Public Appearance https://comicbook.com/anime/news/naruto-anime-creator-convention/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 17:57:00 +0000 Megan Peters a2c3dedb-714d-48b0-a0b0-7b293eb2b159

The creator of Naruto is no stranger to fame. While Masashi Kishimoto isn't one to bask in the limelight, his name is known the world over. From public appearances to publisher notes, Naruto fans are always excited to hear from Kishimoto. And now, we have learned the artist is planning a rare convention appearance this year.

The information comes from Kana, a popular manga publisher in France. The company announced it is bringing Kishimoto to France this August along with Mikio Ikemoto. So if you have ever wanted to hear from Kishimoto in person, this event may do the trick.

According to Kana, Kishimoto and Ikemoto will be in France for the first time this August. "We're not done! We have the immense honor of announcing that Kishimoto and Ikemoto will be in France this year for the very first time," the publisher shared. The duo will be in the country between August 24 - 25.

As you can imagine, fans of Naruto are eager to hear from Kishimoto himself. The artist is just 49 years old and already stands as one of manga's preeminent creators. In 1999, Kishimoto brought Naruto to life after mocking up early drafts with Shueisha. Once Team 7 made its debut, the ninja series caught on quickly, and Naruto went on to become an industry superstar by the time its anime launch at Studio Pierrot.

These days, Kishimoto stays busy with Naruto as he oversees the story of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. The manga is published mostly by V-Jump with Ukyo Kodachi and Ikemoto on hand. If you are not familiar with Naruto, the hit series is easier to binge now than ever. You can find the original run of Naruto streaming everywhere from Netflix to Hulu and Crunchyroll. So for more info on the series, you can read the official synopsis of Naruto below:

"Twelve years ago the Village Hidden in the Leaves was attacked by a fearsome threat. A nine-tailed fox spirit claimed the life of the village leader, the Hokage, and many others. Today, the village is at peace and a troublemaking kid named Naruto is struggling to graduate from Ninja Academy. His goal may be to become the next Hokage, but his true destiny will be much more complicated. The adventure begins now!"

My Hero Academia Recap Teases All Might's Big Iron Man Moment https://comicbook.com/anime/news/my-hero-academia-season-7-armored-all-might-tease/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 17:20:00 +0000 Nick Valdez aba599f8-1fa4-40a1-b76e-3caba69999df

My Hero Academia is currently readying to return for Season 7 of the anime with a month's worth of recap episodes, and the post-credits scene from the newest episode is setting up for a major All Might upgrade! My Hero Academia: Memories is now airing as part of the ongoing Spring 2024 anime schedule, and it will feature four episodes recapping major events from the first six seasons of the anime ahead of the new season. These episodes also include some special new scenes setting up what's to come, and the newest episode was focused squarely on All Might's journey.

My Hero Academia: Memories Episode 2 was focused on All Might as he and the other heroes are preparing for the final fight against the villains in Season 7, and he was looking back on the path he's taken to get to this point. While this included many of his biggest moments, a new post-credits scene at the end of the episode teases that though All Might may be powerless without One For All, he's far from out of the fight completely as All Might is preparing for a big upgrade in the new season.

My Hero Academia: Armored All Might Tease

The post-credits scene for My Hero Academia: Memories Episode 2 sees All Might heading into a dark room. It's here he ponders what's possible for the fight ahead, but it's clear that he's getting something ready as a briefcase starts to glow. Without giving too much away for fans waiting to see it in action in Season 7, this is a special suit of armor for All Might that he will don at a very important part of the final battles. Which means we're getting some big action guaranteed before the season's over.

My Hero Academia Season 7 will be premiering officially on May 4th in Japan, and Crunchyroll previously announced that they will be the official streaming home for the new season outside of Japan on May 4th at 2:30 AM PT (which will be the weekly release time for the new episodes). If you wanted to catch up with the previous seasons, you can check them out on Crunchyroll as well.

Civil War Tops Box Office Upon Opening as Godzilla x Kong Crosses $400 Million https://comicbook.com/anime/news/civil-war-godzilla-kong-box-office-gross/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 16:29:00 +0000 Megan Peters 7561755a-0266-4773-9034-5d6573e90926

The numbers are in for the weekend box office, and it seems like Civil War made a big push with audiences. The new A24 feature topped the domestic box office with a record opening of $25.7 million USD. And for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the weekend total pushed the blockbuster over $400 million grossed at the global office.

Thanks to the updated totals, we know Civil War led the domestic box office upon opening with a clear win. Not only did the $25+ debut give A24 Studios its first number one opening, but it also marked the company's highest-grossing opening to date. So far, Civil War has yet to debut in any global market outside of the United Kingdom. Experts are curious to see how the movie holds up given its western-centric plot, but so far, things are looking good for the Alex Garland project.

As for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, its third week in theaters grossed nearly $16 million domestically. To date, the movie has earned $157.9 million at home, and its global pull is even higher. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has grossed more than $250 million internationally, and that has pushed the movie beyond the $400 million tentpole. Given the movie's budget was under $200 million, you can see why the MonsterVerse is on a high these days. Not long ago, Apple TV+ confirmed it will expand its vision for the franchise. In the wake of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the show has been ordered a second season, and Apple TV+ says it is developing new spin offs for the MonsterVerse.

When it comes to the rest of the box office's domestic hauls, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire brought in $5.8 million this weekend while Kung Fu Panda 4 stuck it out with $5.5 million. The top eight finished out with Dune 2, Monkey Man, The First Omen, and The Long Game.

Godzilla Comic Welcomes New Ghidorah-Level Titan to MonsterVerse https://comicbook.com/anime/news/godzilla-justice-league-big-one-titan/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 15:56:00 +0000 Megan Peters ddd78bd0-acca-4444-93fa-6658733a30ea

Over the decades, Godzilla has faced his fair share of monsters. From Gigan to Ghidorah, the list goes on and on. These days, Godzilla is facing down foes with Kong at his side, and the DC Universe is getting in on that action. Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong is thriving, and its latest teaser introduces a new alpha-level threat.

The whole thing comes from the MonsterVerse as the franchise welcomed a new titan to the DC Comics run. The beast is simply named Big One, and it is being touted as dangerous as Mecha Ghidorah. There are few titans in history more dangerous than Big One, and it will take the Justice League working with Godzilla to defeat the threat.

(Photo: DC Comics)

If you want to know what Big One is all about, well - the titan is said to have been created using the Lazarus Pit. The combination titan is absolutely massive, and it borrows monster DNA from the creatures Kong faced on Skull Island. The nasty lizards have been given a major upgrade with Big One, and there is no way Kong would be able to face down this foe solo.

Luckily, Kong has allies on hand to help him. You can imagine he won't be too happy about the return of his nemesis, but Big One is bigger than Skull Island. The titan has the potential to take on the world if the Justice League cannot stop him. It seems the Lazarus Pit has made another monstrosity, and the MonsterVerse has grown bigger as such.

If you are not caught up on Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong, you can find the DC Comics crossover easily enough. With six issues to date, the Toho collaboration can be found in local comic stores. As for the MonsterVerse, the franchise is thriving in the wake of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The movie has grossed nearly $400 million globally, and it has put the franchise in good shape to continue.

No Game No Life Creator Is Desperate for Season Two https://comicbook.com/anime/news/no-game-no-life-season-2-future/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 15:10:00 +0000 Megan Peters 09d1f5dc-5a11-46f9-89b0-cc4ae01fd2a3

It is hard to believe, but the tenth anniversary of No Game No Life is here. This month marks 10-years since the isekai anime came to life, and the colorful series still remains a fave with fans. Despite its slow releases, No Game No Life has a dedicate army of fans, and now the series' creator is begging the industry for a second season.

The plea comes from social media courtesy of Yuu Kamiya, the creator of No Game No Life. Taking to X (Twitter), the artist hyped the anime's 10th anniversary before putting out a please for more content.

"It's the tenth anniversary of No Game No Life. Please make a second season," Kamiya posted.

For one reason or another, No Game No Life has avoided a season two. The anime's debut went live in April 2014, and its first film came down the line in 2017. Since then, No Game No Life hasn't given any anime updates. With the light novel and manga ongoing, No Game No Life has plenty of content to adapt. But for now, Madhouse is keeping its mouth shut about a No Game No Life comeback.

If you are not familiar with the sci-fi isekai, no sweat! You can binge season one of No Game No Life on Crunchyroll now. So for more info on the series, you can read the official synopsis for No Game No Life below:

"In this graphic novel, No Game, No Life centers around Sora and Shiro, a brother and sister who are brilliant (but unemployed) gamers whose Internet fame have spawned urban legends all over the Internet. One day, they are summoned by a boy named "God" to an alternate world. There, God has prohibited war and declared this to be a world where "everything is decided by games" - even national borders. Humanity has been driven back into one remaining city by the other races. Will Sora and Shiro, the good-for-nothing brother and sister, become the "Saviors of Humanity" on this alternate world?"

Avatar: The Last Airbender Movie Unveils Impressive New Core Cast https://comicbook.com/anime/news/avatar-the-last-airbender-movie-cast/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 14:47:00 +0000 Megan Peters 4aec53cf-4fce-496b-9fb6-a3de184c5101

Avatar: The Last Airbender is ready to tackle another frontier. After reclaiming its live-action history with a successful Netflix series, all eyes are on the animated franchise. After all, Avatar: The Last Airbender is getting its first movie in 2025, and it has roped in an impressive new cast to oversee its leads.

The cast revelation was made recently at CinemaCon when Paramount hit the stage. It was their fans got updates on everything from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to Star Trek. Of course, Avatar: The Last Airbender was noted, and it was there we learned only one member of the show's original cast is set to return.

Dante Basco, the voice of Zuko, is slated to reprise his role in Avatar's first film. The actor is the only one to return to the franchise as Avatar Studios has found new talent to take care of Aang's gang.

When it comes to Aang, we know Eric Nam will be overseeing the role. The Korean-American singer made their debut in 2013 overseas as Nam joined a talent show in South Korea. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Nam has enjoyed fame as a K-pop idol and has recently moved to English albums. His role as Aang will mark Nam's first film role, but the actor participated in a number of variety and reality shows in South Korea.

As for Katara, the prodigal water bender is expected to be played by Jessica Batten. The Canadian actress comes from an indigenous background, and Matten even did modeling for the First Nations. To date, the actress has starred in projects like Frontier and Tribal. When it comes to Sokka, it appears Roman Zaragoza is expected to handle the warrior. The actor is known best for his role on Ghosts but has also appeared in projects like Stumptown and Those Who Can't.

Finally, Toph seems to be eyeing a new voice actress as well in Dionne Quan. The veteran actress has been working in voice overs since they were 14 years old, and Quan has worked on several major series. From The Fairly OddParents to Rugrats, Quan has a history with Nickelodeon titles. As for Toph, the actress will bring additional representation to the earth bender as Quan is legally blind. The actress was born with optic nerve hypoplasia, a condition that arises when the nerve itself is congenitally underdeveloped.

With a new cast set in stone, Avatar: The Last Airbender is making strides towards its theatrical launch. Paramount has confirmed Dave Bautista will voice the film's original villain. With the movie set for a 2025 launch, Avatar: The Last Airbender has plenty of work left to finish before its movie is ready, and fans are eager to see what the feature has in store.

Netflix's One Piece: Inaki Godoy Tuned Into Luffy by Spending Months at Sea https://comicbook.com/anime/news/one-piece-netflix-star-months-at-sea/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 13:45:00 +0000 Evan Valentine f30f59fa-e267-4f33-af21-9a3df1c51d85

It's no secret that the young actors who portray the Straw Hat Pirates in Netflix's live-action One Piece are big fans of the shonen franchise. Emily Rudd, for example, went to extreme lengths to make sure she secured the role of Nami. To be prepared for the second season, the captain of the Straw Hats took the opportunity to sail the world to get ready for the next season which will most likely bring Luffy and his crew to Drum Island and Alabasta.

When last we left Luffy and his friends in the first live-action season, the Straw Hats were embarking to the Grand Line to make their dreams come true. Despite scoring a major victory against Arlong and the Fish Men, the Straw Hat Pirates should have some big challenges sent their way in season two. Luckily, the crew of the Going Merry is going to get some help as One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda has already confirmed that Tony Tony Chopper, the reindeer doctor of Drum Island, will be joining the team. The new medical swashbuckler is going to be a much-needed assist as Luffy and company will have to most likely take on Crocodile and the remnants of Baroqueworks should the live-action adaptation continue to follow the source material.

Inaki Godoy Takes To The High Seas

Before One Piece's second season begins filming for Netflix, Inaki Godoy hit the high seas and was apparently sailing for around eighty days. While he hasn't figured out how to turn his body into rubber to live as Monkey D. Luffy, it's clear that the young actor is committed to his role. Luffy might not be able to swim thanks to eating a Devil Fruit, but that won't stop him from sailing into the Grand Line to become the King of the Pirates.

Thanks to One Piece's Netflix success, the floodgates might be opened further when it comes to live-action anime adaptations. Lionsgate has confirmed that it is working on a live-action Naruto movie while Netflix is working on live-action takes on Mobile Suit Gundam and My Hero Academia.

Would you be willing to spend months on the high seas to be a pirate in the Grand Line? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and the world of the Straw Hat Pirates.

New Elden Ring Manga Isn't What You Might Think https://comicbook.com/anime/news/elden-ring-new-streamer-manga-read/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 13:43:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 3d4d1fcc-7146-4a05-b5db-b29875c3a215

Elden Ring took the video game world by storm, as From Software added another major, challenging entry in their game roster. Joining the likes of Dark Souls, Demon Souls, Sekiro, and Bloodborne, the Lands Between demanded a lot from player in attempting to become the next Elden Lord. Luckily, a new story is giving fans of the game the chance to take in the world without taking on challenges themselves, though this might not be the manga that many saw coming. Elden Ring: Going Forward, There Will Be Our Bond has a premise that will take you by surprise.

Elden Ring is no stranger to the world of manga, as a popular entry has been Elden Ring: The Road To The Erdtree. The series first started in 2022 and followed a character in The Lands Between as the protagonist sets out on his first journey. Created by manga artist Nikiichi Tobita, the creator of A Cursed Sword's Daily Life, this entry was a big entry point for the medium into From Software's latest universe. Following this manga series, the From Software game received an additional story in Elden Ring Become Lord manga which saw another "Tarnished" taking center stage. Elden Ring: Going Forward, There Will Be Our Bond will be much different than these two entries.

Elden Ring: A Streaming Manga

elden-ring.jpg
(Photo: Kadokawa & From Software)

Elden Ring: Going Forward, There Will Be Our Bond will follow two streamers that are playing the video game, making for quite the departure from the previous manga entries. The manga series will be printed by Kadokawa and will start its run on May 30th next month. Here's how Kadokawa describes the series that will take a fresh look at the Lands Between,

"A teenage school boy is spending his days playing video games, especially PvP, where he thrives & shares his sessions via live streaming. But one day out of the blue his classmate shares his struggles playing "Elden Ring" & the boy is impulsively stepping in to help him out. Soon he enjoys their joint gaming sessions, but it gradually changes the content of his live streams, causing tension with his viewers. This is the youth tale of a high school gamer trying to balance his online presence with real-world friendships."

For those waiting to re-enter the Lands Between in the gaming world, Elden Ring's DLC, Shadow of The Erdtree, will be released on June 21st. Considering how massive past DLCs have been from From Software, this will be one to watch.
