The mobile-only streaming platform Quibi was poised to revolutionize how audiences consumed media, as it broke down long-form stories into digestible installments of less than ten minutes. To bring in subscribers when it launched in 2020, Quibi enlisted the talents of a number of compelling storytellers, which included writer/director Veena Sud developing the thriller series The Stranger, which starred Maika Monroe and Dane DeHaan. Sadly, one of the major setbacks the platform faced was that it launched as the coronavirus pandemic was kicking off, which meant viewers were more interested in what they could stream on their TVs. When Quibi called it quits later in 2020, it sold off its titles to The Roku Channel, but Sud wasn't content to let the project languish in an overlooked corner of TV and has brought back the project for Hulu, where it is now streaming.

The Stranger is described, "New to Los Angeles, rideshare driver Clare (Maika Monroe, star of It Follows and Neon's upcoming Longlegs) picks up Carl (Dane DeHaan, recently seen in Oppenheimer and star of HBO's The Staircase) from a home deep in the Hollywood Hills. What begins as a routine ride turns into Clare's worst nightmare: a twelve-hour fight for survival through the city's seedy underbelly. Carl is not the passenger Clare thought he was, and Clare is not easy prey...Avan Jogia (Victorious, Now Apocalypse) also stars in this thriller, coming soon to Hulu as a new feature-length film."

The Stranger marked a unique opportunity for Sud, as the story was specifically developed as an episodic experience optimized for mobile phones, though she has since reimagined the entire project to deliver genre fans a cohesive feature film.

ComicBook.com caught up with Sud to talk the experience of making the project, revisiting it all these years later, and rekindling her passion for the adventure.

ComicBook.com: When you think back on actually making the series or even writing the show, were there times when you were developing it where you thought, "You know what? I'm really excited about this, but I do wish that it was a feature film," or was that something that didn't even really dawn on you until you had this opportunity?

Veena Sud: Well, from the very get-go, at my very first meeting with [Quibi's] Jeffrey [Katzenberg], he did say, "Look, part of the perks of trying this new art form is I'm giving the artist the copyright to their own work." So that itself just opened up so many doors in my own mind, and for all of us, that we were basically given the opportunity to make this one very, very, very, very, very specific type of thing that most likely could not live anywhere else, but if we were crafty enough, we could figure out how to make it live on and on and on and on in whatever form.

What I chose, just because the math made sense, it was 10-minute episodes. Whatever it was, 10 episodes, I don't even remember now, but it was basically the length of a feature film and it followed, if not the true three-act structure, there was an inherent, usual hero's journey in it because it was a limited series as conceptualized by Quibi. I did know going in -- now I have to think about this as episodic, but also how it can come together as a feature.

We had to shoot it that way, which was even more interesting. It was such a challenge for all of us. My DP, Paul Yee, is just a genius, and my production designer, Jenny M?ller, was amazing, because we spent so much time talking about, "Let's see something one way but continue to be able to have the capacity at some point to walk away with footage and see it another way, horizontal versus vertical."

As you were revisiting and re-imagining the material, was there something that you came across that made you think, "Ah, if only I could have told 2019 Veena this while on set,"? Is there anything like that where you thought, "I wish that there was something I had done differently when bringing the series to life back then,"?

Well, that's a really good question, because I think all of us ... I've looked back at every single thing I've done, and I was just like, "Oh, good God. Seriously, you wrote that, you thought that?" I think that structurally, though, in this specific incident, no, because it was designed from the get as both. The big question was does it work as both?

I knew after looking at the finished Quibi series, yes, it worked as the TV episodic. But it wasn't until me and my editor sat down and we put it all together and we smoothed out and we took some shots out and replaced with others that we said, "Does this even work? Let's take a look." It felt like it did, and for people who watched it on Quibi, what this version allowed was this much more material and this much more material, because the screen now was this versus that.

Well, and that's another thing, because I'm someone who watched not only the original version, but also this version. And so, for other people who maybe watched it originally and now it's a different thing and it's coming to Hulu, what do you think might be the biggest difference other than necessarily just the platform? Structurally or story-wise, what would be the reason that is so fulfilling for people to revisit in this recontextualized format?

I think so much of what I imagined when I was thinking of it as a feature was the visceral pleasure of walking through a city that we think we know that we don't know. And so, I purposely picked locations that aren't the typical L.A. things. I feel like L.A., it's such an iconic city, but the parts of the city in the film, it's the noir L.A. I was like, "This is a noir city. Let's see it as such." And so, I think the visceral pleasure of being able to see this much, this big on your big home TV or on your laptop is certainly a different experience than this.

What I loved about the tiny, vertical experience was we created this thing called, or we didn't create it but we thought about it when we were shooting, Z depth. Instead of our usual left, right, expansive, blah, blah, we had to think about going into the screen. That's why we shot things behind her when she's moving forward. I talked about this before, we pushed the candy aisles closer to her in the gas station so you would feel things moving so you wouldn't be bored just seeing a floating head like we are in FaceTime with each other. It created its own visual language, which was propulsive. I think this visual language of this story is very noir, classically noir. So in the same way that kitchen table dramas feel different than epics, it's a visceral kind of difference and experience in the story.

Something very specific that maybe I paid more attention to or resonated with me more than you had even initially planned is the ringtone in the movie, because any time you're watching a movie and someone's using, say, an Android product and you hear the Apple ringtone, I'm always thinking, "Wait, what? What's going on here?" So, the ringtone was this very unique, creepy, familiar sound but had something very ominous about it. Can you talk at all about just what that process was like finding that specific tone, if it was just something you came across, or if it was designed specifically for this story?

The ringtone on Dane, the bad guy's text, was very purposeful and was designed. That was a Quibi invention. And, again, I think what was so pleasurable about Quibi is that we had to reinvent things and be like, "Okay, how do I get attention? How do I get people to look at phones when we are looking at 20 million things on our phones? And what is the experience of a phone?" The one common denominator for literally, oh, my gosh, every single person on the face of the Earth is we all have an opening rush when we hear our phone go off. And so, I was like, "Okay, how do we use that thing that we're feeling to scare the sh-t out of us?"

We talked about, every time an episode would drop in a person's phone who subscribed to Quibi, that ringtone would hit. And at one point, we were talking about if we dropped all of the episodes over the course of 12 hours, every hour you would get that creepy-ass ringtone. So mid-season, when it's at the scariest and bad guys chasing them through the streets of L.A. at 2 a.m., you get that ringtone. You wake up, and you're like, "Oh, my God." Then you watch the thing, because it's addictive, and then you go to sleep and maybe even dream about it.

It was like, again, how do we engage with a thing that engages with us versus the traditional television or movie screen that we sit in front and take in? We get to engage back and forth with it, so that was the purpose of a very specific ringtone. When you heard it on your phone you would know exactly what it was, and you've become acclimated over the course of many episodes to have, not a dopamine reaction, but a reaction of fear and trepidation to it.

This journey with Maika as Clare, there's definitely a resolution, but it can't help but leave you wondering what is next in her life. Was this something traumatic she never recovered from? Was this something that was empowering to her? For you, revisiting this as a creative, has that sparked some storytelling flames within you of wanting to maybe revisit Clare's character and what would be next for her? Or was this almost more of a closing of the book, given the tumultuous journey of Quibi and you finally get this opportunity to make sure that audiences get to check out this thing you put so much heart and soul into?

I think for any writer or creator, it's always like I'm intrigued by what organically comes next. So, yeah, I don't close chapters very well. I keep trying to get my TV shows back on TV. I'm the zombie TV creator, and so nothing ever dies.

I feel that, who knows? Especially given what's going to happen later in 2024. This movie is about schooling and beating toxic masculinity, and we're in real life about to f-cking go down that road again, potentially. Who knows what will come out? But I do love the idea, and I always love the idea of telling a story where we get to win at the end. She won, and she changed, and she went from a woman who understandably cries in the face of extreme terror to a woman that says, "No more."

The Stranger is now streaming on Hulu.

Reginald the Vampire Returns for Season 2 Trailer on SYFY https://comicbook.com/horror/news/reginald-vampire-season-2-trailer-syfy/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 19:20:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw a10f713d-f19b-4fc6-a924-d314a7cde208

Reginald the Vampire Season 2 is coming to SYFY - and you can watch the very first trailer for it here!

Marvel's Spider-Man Trilogy star Jacob Batalon stars as Reginald the Vampire, in a dramedy that has "a lot of heart and just enough blood" and "proves the undead life is just as complicated as life itself." The series "turns traditional vampire tropes on their head while draining the blood from modern-day beauty standards."

Reginald the Vampire co-stars Mandela Van Peebles, Savannah Basley, Em Haine, Aren Buchholz, Marguerite Hanna, and Thailey Roberge.

"The only thing better than getting the opportunity to make a season of television with Syfy is to get the opportunity to do it again," series creator and executive producer Harley Peyton shared in a statement when Season 2 was announced. "All of us - cast and crew, writers, producers - can hardly wait."

Batalon also shared the news in his Instagram stories, writing, "We're back, baby."

What Is Reginald The Vampire Season 2 About?

Reginald Andres finally got his life together - when he was turned into a vampire. While he doesn't fit into the stereotypical expectations of what a vampire looks like - he's not chiseled or classically handsome - Reginald has found his place amongst an unlikely cohort that includes the cool vampire who sired him, the former vampire chieftain turned unexpected ally (or is she?), and his co-worker/former girlfriend. A show with a lot of heart and just enough blood, "Reginald the Vampire" proves the undead life is just as complicated as life itself.

The series stars Jacob Batalon ("Spider-Man: No Way Home", Em Haine ("Chilling Adventures of Sabrina"), Mandela Van Peebles ("Mayor of Kingstown"), Savannah Basley ("SurrealEstate")

Harley Peyton ("Chucky") serves as executive producer and showrunner, with Jeremiah Chechik, Todd Berger, Lindsay Macadam, Brett Burlock and Peter Emerson, also serving as executive producers.

When ComicBook.com spoke to Jacob Batalon a few years back, he talked about stepping into his own starring role, after playing the 'guy in the chair' sidekick to Tom Holland's Spider-man for three films:

"I feel like I wasn't really looking for advice. I feel like TH [Tom Holland] is very much a supportive person of me, obviously my brother for life," Batalon explained. "But I feel like this was a journey that I had to take on my own. I think that was my journey." He added, "I watched a lot of great successful people work and operate on movie sets. I feel like I learned a lot from watching and understanding ... Without their example for me to follow, I wouldn't know where to begin."

Reginald the Vampire is produced by Great Pacific Media Inc., Modern Story Company, December Films and Cineflix Studios and executive produced by Harley Peyton, Jeremiah Chechik, Todd Berger, Lindsay Macadam, Brett Burlock and Peter Emerson. The series is based on the book series by Johnny B. Truant.

Season 2 premieres on SYFY on May 8th.

Evil Dead Spinoff Director Offers Update on New Film https://comicbook.com/horror/news/evil-dead-spinoff-sequel-status-update-plans-sebastien-vanicek/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 16:26:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 7fdb1bf6-8af4-4b5d-94cc-1edfebbc2ef5

Last year saw the release of the Evil Dead spin-off film Evil Dead Rise, with its financial success resulting in the announcement that director S?bastien Vani?ek would be developing a new entry for the franchise, though he recently dodged offering many concrete details on the project due to how early in the scripting stages it is. While the big-screen entries in the series have included a trilogy of films starring Bruce Campbell, followed by a reboot in 2013 and then last year's Evil Dead Rise utilizing the Necronomicon as its connective tissue to its predecessors, it's currently unknown how, or if, this upcoming project will feature substantial connections to previous films.

When asked by Screen Rant about the upcoming film's connections to previous chapters, Vani?ek replied, "I would love to answer this question, but we are in the early process of the writing, so we have so many questions. We just wrote stuff with my co-writer, it's the same co-writer I wrote Infested with, so I'm working with my team, I'm really glad. But we are in the process of building our story, our characters and everything, and we are chatting with each other. There's so many ideas coming from everywhere. For the moment, we are in the sandbox, and we haven't started to build a castle, we are just gathering the best sand, and as soon as I have the best sand, I will start to build a castle."

Despite Fede ?lvarez developing a reboot with original director Sam Raimi, star Campbell, and original producer Rob Tapert all supporting the endeavor and even producing the project, the 2013 Evil Dead failed to resonate with fans as strongly as the filmmakers had hoped and never earned a continuation. Instead, the franchise pivoted to the small screen for three seasons of Ash vs. Evil Dead.

Earlier this year, Evil Dead Rise star Lily Sullivan avoided directly confirming whether she would be returning to the series, though teased that such conversations have happened.

"There's been many, many conversations, many alt paths, many possibilities, which are all quite whack and fun and great. And whatever ends up coming to fruition, I'm excited for it. But yeah, I can't say anything on it though, but yeah, excited," Sullivan previously shared with ComicBook.com. "It's all literally up to the universe of the Evil Dead gods. In a great way, until you cross the bridge, that's just what it is. The blessings of this industry, and the curse, you have to walk into the unknown, so people should also walk into Monolith. Look at that."

Stay tuned for updates on S?bastien Vani?ek's Evil Dead spinoff.

Melissa Barrera Teases Big Plans After Scream Firing https://comicbook.com/horror/news/melissa-barrera-next-movies-roles-after-scream-7-firing/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 15:48:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw e55f21eb-3db7-4832-98f7-8cc7b45b9232

Former Scream series star Melissa Barrera is re-teaming with her former Scream V and VI directors Radio Silence (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett) for the new horror film Abigail this month. That's a big deal for Barrera, who has had a turbulent year in the industry. The War in Gaza sparked many reactions from Hollywood celebrities, but Barrera's outspoken pro-Gaza stance got her fired from the Scream franchise, just when she was gearing up for production on Scream VII, which would have presumably been a climax to her trilogy arc as Sam Carpenter, the troubled daughter of original Scream movie killer, Billy Loomis.

When Melissa Barrera was fired from Scream 7, many wondered if she would also be blackballed from Hollywood altogether. In a new interview with Collider's Ladies' Night, Barrera let host Perri Nemiroff know that her career as an actress is still very much alive and thriving.

When asked how things are going for her since being fired from Scream, Barrera said: "Just continuing to put myself out there. Unafraid. Because I'm here to stay. [Laughs] So just continuing to audition -- I still have a lot of things that I wanna do. I have a lot of dreams that I want to accomplish -- a lot of different movies that I want to do."

With Abigail, Barrera has a prime opportunity to once again prove that she's a standout in the 'Scream Queen' lane of horror. With two horror franchises (Scream and Abigail) on her resume, there's even an opportunity for Barrera to do more than horror - career growth she's definitely interested in pursuing:

"I wanna produce, I wanna direct so there's so much that I can busy myself with," she said later in the interview. "Focusing on something that happened and that already happened and it's not ... It's nothing ... There are more important things that are happening in the world and that's, you know, that was just a little hiccup. I'm good."

Melissa Barrera doesn't just credit herself with finding the peace of mind to move forward after Scream - she credits her team, which has been on the frontlines of confronting the controversy over her firing:

"Actors aren't the person you talk to, ever. You always talk to their representatives and that includes publicists, so they are my face , basically. They are an extension of me. So it's really important, to me, that they are nice people, that they are respectful and polite... We are on the same page in a lot of things , and so I feel very, very lucky and fortunate that I have a great team all around. My publicists have been incredible in the last six months of my life , and it's just been amazing to have that support, because it's important. It can be make-or-break for your mental health to feel that your team has your back, or that you're alone, [it] can be terrible."

Abigail will be in theaters on Friday.

Original Blair Witch Project Star Blasts New Movie From Lionsgate, Blumhouse https://comicbook.com/horror/news/original-blair-witch-actor-joshua-leonard-blasts-reboot-blumhouse-lionsgate/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 23:59:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt d3261a8c-72fb-4879-9680-930d6af29966

Blair Witch Project, one of the most well-known staples of the horror genre, is getting a reboot. Although the original found-footage feature received two sequels, Lionsgate and Blumhouse are now teaming up on a complete reboot of the franchise as the first movie in a new pact between the outlets. Though the news might excite fans of the cult classic, some of the actor's involved in the original picture aren't especially thrilled, including actor Joshua Leonard.

Leonard took to Instagram this week to share a passionate response to the news, railing against the studio's treatment of himself and his co-stars for the original film.

"So, this is MY face on a press release for a film being made by two major studios - both I've worked for, both I respect. The WEIRD PART is that I didn't know anything about it until a friend sent me a 'congrats' screenshot yesterday. My frustration is compounded b/c I've been trying to get @lionsgate to engage for over a month about a BWP charity screening I'm putting together for @opositivefest to raise money for artists without healthcare, and NO ONE will get back to me," Leonard said alongside a series of screenshots detailing the news.

Leonard then went through a series of statements showing just how much money he and his co-stars have missed out on, despite the film's wide-raning success.

"In 1999, BWP's OG distributor claimed to have released the most profitable independent film ever (bought for 1M, grossed 250M+), while internally they told us that they were actually losing money from marketing expenses... so WE might wind up owing THEM $," he added. "Because we used our real names in the first film, the studio claimed copyright. We had to take them to federal court to win OUR NAMES back. A Hollywood insider told the press that we (actors) were paid 4M dollars as a buyout for our ownership points, while in reality, we made 300k... and NEVER saw another dime. (After buying a car and paying off his student loans, Mike was back moving furniture within 12 months of the release, while still on magazine covers.)"

Although the actor says he's excited fans are still thrilled with the film after the better part of three decades, his frustration with Hollywood's treatment of the franchise is something that continues to upset him.

"I'm so proud of our little punk-rock movie, and I LOVE the fans who keep the flames burning," Leonard concluded. "But at this point, it's 25 years of disrespect from the folks who've pocketed the lion's share (pun intended) of the profits from OUR work, and that feels both icky and classless."

The Blair Witch Project is now streaming on The Roku Channel while its 2016's Blair Witch followup can be seen on Tubi.

Robert Kirkman: The Walking Dead Animated Series Can't Happen "Until I Get the Rights Back From AMC" https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/the-walking-dead-animated-series-rights-amc-robert-kirkman/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 23:15:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo fe03dc36-a8d9-4b2b-baab-f4f1f24ec676

The Walking Dead won't be reanimated anytime soon. Even before creator Robert Kirkman and Prime Video collaborated on adult animated superhero show Invincible, fans have been hoping to sink their teeth into an animated adaptation of the Skybound/Image comic by Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. Kirkman has been receptive to the idea of a "faithful" animated version of the black-and-white zombie comic that spanned 193 issues and spawned a live-action Walking Dead Universe at AMC, but it seems the network isn't biting.

"I'd love to see it happen someday, but I don't think it'll be possible until I get the rights back from AMC," Kirkman wrote in response to a fan who asked about a Walking Dead animated show in the "Letter Hacks" column of The Walking Dead Deluxe #85. Skybound's TWD editor Amanda LaFranco added: "There's definitely been developments over the years for something like this, and there's a lot of fans over here that would still very much love to make that happen."

In 2010, the network released an eight-minute, "fully-animated" motion comic adapting 13 pages from The Walking Dead #1 by Kirkman and artist Tony Moore. AMC also dabbled with comic-style animation in an animated segment of the webisode series The Walking Dead: Red Machete. AMC's Walking Dead Universe chief content officer Scott M. Gimple has expressed interest in using animation in potential future episodes of anthology spinoff Tales of the Walking Dead, but the franchise has so far only dabbled with the format.

AMC acquired the rights to the graphic novel in 2009 in one of the largest development deals the network ever closed. The Walking Dead debuted in 2010 from series developer and showrunner Frank Darabont, who served as executive producer with Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, and Kirkman. The Darabont-directed AMC Original series premiere marked the largest audience for any original series on the network, and delivered the highest ratings in the key 18-49 demographic for any cable series premiere in 2010. AMC's Walking Dead was the #1 series on basic cable for 12 consecutive years when it ended its 11-season run after 177 episodes in 2022.

In March, Kirkman and four other Walking Dead executive producers -- Hurd, Alpert, Charles Eglee, and former showrunner Glen Mazzara -- saw a victory in their 2022 profits-sharing suit against the network when a federal judge denied AMC's motion to have the case dismissed. (After first filing suit in 2017, and after Darabont was awarded $200 million in his separate profit participation lawsuit in 2021, the executive producers sued a second time in a suit arguing they were "entitled to a payment well over $200 million from AMC.")

Along with since-ended spinoffs Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond, AMC continued The Walking Dead with the spinoffs The Walking Dead: Dead City (starring Lauren Cohan's Maggie and Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Negan), The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (starring Norman Reedus), and The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live (starring Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes and Danai Gurira's Michonne). Dead City season 2 and Daryl Dixon season 2, also starring Melissa McBride as Carol, are currently in the works at AMC.

Ryan Coogler's Vampire Film With Michael B. Jordan Kickstarts Production https://comicbook.com/horror/news/ryan-coogler-vampire-film-with-michael-b-jordan-starts-production/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 23:02:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 93591487-464b-41a5-a05f-771c2df2a00e

Creed and Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is reteaming up with Michael B. Jordan for an untitled vampire film at Warner Bros. It was confirmed last month that the movie would be heading into theaters in 2025, and it's also set to star Delroy Lindo, Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, and Jack O'Connell. This week, cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw took to Instagram to tease that production on the new film has begun.

"Get ready. ? ? ?," Arkapaw captioned the post. You can check out the post, which hides the movie's title, below:

What Is Ryan Coogler's New Movie About?

According to previous reports, not much is known about the film. While folks have been referring to it as "Ryan Coogler's vampire movie," it's only been confirmed that the film is a supernatural thriller. There have been rumors that the movie will be set in the Jim Crow-era South and will feature vampires in addition to southern supernatural traditions. There have also been reports that Jordan is playing twins in the project. The Hollywood Reporter previously said there were whispers of Lindo's role having a "musical element."

Coogler will be producing the untitled project alongside Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian. Two-time Academy Award-winning composer Ludwig G?ransson, who has scored all four of Coogler's previous films, will executive produce the new movie alongside Rebecca Cho and Will Greenfield.

This project marks Coogler's fifth feature film, all of which have also involved both Jordan and G?ransson. Jordan starred in 2013's Fruitvale Station, 2015's Creed, and 2018's Black Panther. He returned for a small role in 2021's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, keeping their collaboration streak intact. G?ransson composed the music for all four of those films, winning his first Oscar for his work on Black Panther. He recently earned his second Academy Award for scoring Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer.

Is Blade Still Happening?

All this talk of a potential vampire movie from Marvel creatives has fans speculating about Blade once again. Marvel fans are still waiting on updates about the MCU's Blade, which is also supposed to feature Lindo.

Bassam Tariq was originally slated to direct Blade with Stacy Osei-Kuffour penning the script, but they exited two months before production was originally supposed to start. Yann Demange stepped in as director while Michael Green was hired as screenwriter. Currently, it is still unclear when the film will start production. As for the cast, Mahershala Ali is still signed on as the titular character. It was previously reported that Lindo and Mia Goth were also signed on to the project, and there has been no news suggesting they've also departed. However, Aaron Pierre recently confirmed he is no longer attached to the project.

"We're working on it. That's the best I could tell you," Ali said in a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly. "I'm really encouraged with the direction of the project. I think we'll be back at it relatively soon."

Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan's untitled movie is set to open in theaters on March 7, 2025. Stay tuned to ComicBook.com for more updates on the film.

Beetlejuice Star Confirms They Won't Return in Sequel https://comicbook.com/horror/news/beetlejuice-geena-davis-barbara-confirms-wont-return-bot-in-sequel/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 20:55:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak bd903618-a0f4-4a51-b948-0317d3d74567

More than 35 years after the release of Beetlejuice, Michael Keaton is finally returning to the titular role in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The first trailer for the movie was released last month, and fans are excited to see some of the original stars return. In addition to Keaton, Winona Ryder is back as Lydia Deetz, and Catherine O'Hara is playing Delia Deetz. However, you shouldn't expect to see Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis back as the loveable ghost couple, Adam and Barbara. Davis recently spoke to ET and confirmed she won't be appearing in the sequel.

"No, I'm not. I'm not in the remake," Davis revealed. "Oh, you were expecting that I would be? Yeah, no, you know what? Because my theory is that ghosts don't age... Not that I have."

What Is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice About?

You can read the sequel's official synopsis here: "After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia's life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. With trouble brewing in both realms, it's only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice's name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem."

In addition to the returning cast members, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice also stars Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, and Monica Bellucci.

"Beetlejuice is the most f*ckin' fun you can have working," Keaton previously shared with Empire. "It's so fun, it's so great. And you know what it is? We're doing it exactly like we did the first movie ... There's a woman in the great waiting room for the afterlife literally with a fishing line - I want people to know this because I love it - tugging on the tail of a cat to make it move."

Keaton added, "[Burton] and I were talking about it years and years ago, never telling anybody. I said, 'If it happens, first of all, we've both said we're doing it many times. We both agreed, if it happens, it has to be done as close to the way we made it the first time. Making stuff up, making stuff happen, improvising and riffing, but literally handmade stuff like people creating things with their hands and building something. F*ckin' great. It's the most fun I've had working on a movie in I can't tell you how long."

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is currently scheduled to debut in theaters on September 6th.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre Reveals Upcoming Fixes for Sissy, Leatherface, and More https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/texas-chain-saw-massacre-ps5-xbox-fixes-sissy-leatherface/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 14:45:00 +0000 Marc Deschamps de37c87f-9682-4766-a093-e6b43642bfdd

A fix for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre's latest Victim is coming on April 16th, but the developers have a bunch of other changes that are currently planned for the game. Gun Media has shared a new edition of "The Muerto Times," which reveals various problems in the game and what stage they're currently in. Some of these are further along than others, with the most notable one being a fix for Sissy's poisons. All of the currently planned fixes can be found listed below:

FIX IN TESTING

  • Family Unable to Be Door Stunned
  • Danny Unable to Tamper
  • Sissy's Poison Through Crawl Spaces, Wall Gaps, and Barricades

UNDER INVESTIGATION

  • Tuning Grappler and Fast Hands
  • Leatherface Rev Exploit
  • Virginia's Boon and Bone Scraps

NEEDS MORE INFO

  • Trap and Snare Animation Issues
  • Grandpa Interactions

Nugget Problems and a Leatherface Cheat

On the game's subreddit, Gun Media offered a bit of extra detail about some of these issues, and exactly what the developers are investigating. Boon is a special ability that allows Virginia to temporarily blind the Family members using a blue cloud of smoke. She can also use it against the family's chicken, Nugget, to prevent it from making noise and giving away her location. However, it seems using it on Nugget "will incorrectly consume a bone scrap if you have one." Meanwhile, the rev exploit is a cheat that allows Leatherface players to avoid being stunned by doors by revving his chainsaw "at a specific time."

At this time, no information has been provided about when these changes will take place. It's possible we could see some of them alongside the fixes to Virginia's skill tree later this month, or fans could end up waiting a little bit longer. It's also worth noting that these aren't the only issues that are currently being worked on.

What Fans Want to See in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

Naturally, these updates from Gun Media have resulted in a lot of comments from players about what they're still hoping to see. Lobby issues continue to be a pressing concern for players, while some have pointed out that dialogue for the Family seems to be broken, triggering when it's not supposed to.

Of course, many other players shared their desire to see a new Killer introduced. A new Family member was teased several weeks ago, but nothing has been revealed just yet. We don't know anything about the Killer's design or backstory, only that it will likely be an original character; Gun Media only has the rights to the first movie in the series, so any material outside that film must be wholly new and not based off of any of the sequels. That could change in the future, but nothing has been announced.

How do you feel about these potential fixes in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre? Is there something you want to see fixed in the game? Share your thoughts with me directly on Twitter at @Marcdachamp or on Instagram at @Dachampgaming!

True Detective: Night Country Showrunner Clarifies Navarro's Fate https://comicbook.com/horror/news/true-detective-night-country-issa-lopez-clarifies-navarro-fate/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 02:24:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 886c0994-2377-45a7-8c1b-38ec1f555f43

The season finale of True Detective: Night Country resolves the season's larger mystery regarding what happened to the TSALAL scientists and who killed Annie K. but left viewers with a final mystery of sorts when it came to the ultimate fate of Trooper Evangeline Navarro. The last moments of the episode saw Navarro walk out into the cold and while we see her again, a voiceover from Chief Liz Danvers says Navarro likely won't be seen again.

The ambiguous ending had many fans wondering if Navarro was alive, dead, a ghost, or if there was something more going on and now, creator Issa L?pez is clarifying that there is an answer in the episode -- you just have to pay very careful attention.

"I think that if you look very carefully, very carefully at the show and follow the lines very carefully, there's an answer to what we saw at the end," L?pez said during Deadline's TV Contenders panel. "But again, there's a space for where your heart wants to live... and what you need to get out of it."

L?pez has previously been fairly ambiguous about Navarro's fate, saying that the ending was "an ink blot test" for viewers to discover for themselves.

"I'm not saying that she's alive, and I'm certainly not saying that she's dead," L?pez told Deadline in an interview about the finale. "I very carefully crafted this as an ink blot test for you to discover yourself as an audience member. I do love that Navarro states very early in the series that she has this impulse to just walk away and leave everything behind. On the other hand, the entire series is an exploration of the fact that she feels a calling to the beyond.

"In the climax of the finale, and instead of fighting it and going in with pain and fear, she surrenders to it. And in doing it, she receives a piece of herself. So that call that she was afraid of is solved. The Aboriginal people in Australia go and walk about, find themselves and then come back, which I think is what Kali [Reis] embraced [for the character]. However, there is a chance that she is also going to be with the women before her visit to them. You can read it both ways and it's up to you to interpret which one fulfills your heart."

True Detective Has Been Renewed for Season 5

Following the success of Night Country, HBO has already renewed True Detective for a fifth season with L?pez returning.

"Issa L?pez is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO's creative spirit," said Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films. "She helmed True Detective: Night Country from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera. Alongside Jodie and Kali's impeccable performances, she's made this installation of the franchise a massive success, we are so lucky to have her as part of our family."

"From conception to release, Night Country has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life," said Issa L?pez, Showrunner, Writer, and Executive Producer. "HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of True Detective with Casey, Francesca and the whole team is a dream come true. I can't wait to go again."

What is True Detective: Night Country about?

The official description of True Detective: Night Country reads, "When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice. The season stars Jodie Foster, Kali Reis, Finn Bennett, Fiona Shaw, with Christopher Eccleston, Isabella Star LaBlanc, and John Hawkes. Guest stars include Anna Lambe, Aka Nivi?na, and Joel D. Montgrand."

American Horror Story: Delicate: Anna Will Do Anything for an Oscar in "Little Gold Man" Preview https://comicbook.com/horror/news/american-horror-story-delicate-anna-will-do-anything-for-an-oscar-in-little-gold-man-preview/ Sat, 13 Apr 2024 02:17:00 +0000 Nicole Drum a758421d-d23e-4d89-aaaa-be885d494e8c

Anna would do anything for an Oscar in American Horror Story: Delicate, and from the looks of things in the latest preview, she. might have to give up everything for it. FX has released a preview or "Little Gold Man", the upcoming eighth episode of American Horror Story's twelfth season set to air on Wednesday, April 17th. In the preview, Anna's Oscars moment gets every closer, but things are growing more and more disturbing both with her pregnancy and in her personal life. You can check out the preview for yourself in the video below.

Here's the official description for "Little Gold Man". "The world around Anna is starting to crescendo in every way: her career path continues to skyrocket, while her personal life is more stressful than ever -- just in time for Hollywood's big night." The episode was written by Halley Feiffer and directed by Jennifer Lynch.

What is American Horror Story: Delicate About?

Based on Danielle Valentine's novel Delicate Condition, in American Horror Story: Delicate, "After multiple failed attempts at IVF, actress Anna Victoria Alcott wants nothing more than to start a family. As the buzz around her recent film grows, she fears that something may be targeting her -- and her pursuit of motherhood." The season stars Emma Roberts, Cara Delevingne, Kim Kardashian, Denis O'Hare, Billie Lourd, Leslie Grossman, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, Julie White, Michaela Jae Rodriguez, Matt Czuchry, Odessa A'zion, and Zachary Quinto, who makes a guest appearance early in the season.

"It is essentially a horror novel about pregnancy," Valentine previously shared with Entertainment Weekly about her book. "It's a novel exploring not just the actual physical gruesomeness of what pregnancy is, but also the medical gaslighting that even modern, very privileged women experience as they're going through their pregnancies and the symptoms that I feel we as a culture still don't talk about for strange reasons."

For Valentine, the movie Alien was a major inspiration as she describes the horror film as being about pregnancy.

"[Alien is] really a movie about pregnancy, but it's been written by a man who doesn't understand that that's what he's writing about ... It's what happens when a guy thinks, 'What's the scariest possible thing I can come up with?' And it's this idea of, what if you're growing this creature inside of you and it's using your resources to get bigger and you can't control it? It has a mind of its own, and then one day it just bursts out of you in this gruesome, bloody mess. When I first saw it when I was a kid, it didn't occur to me that that's basically what pregnancy is, but at six months pregnant, I'm like, 'Oh, wow! That's just a pregnancy story without the pregnancy.' That was the seed right there."

American Horror Story Has Already Been Renewed for Season 13

While there was a delay in the second half of American Horror Story: Delicate, the series has already been renewed for Season 13. Back in 2020, FX renewed the horror anthology through to Season 13 which means that even with this delay, there is still at least one more season of the series to come.

American Horror Story: Delicate Part 2 airs Wednesdays on FX.

Civil War Review

Here's what host Kofi Outlaw said in his Civil War (2024) review:

With Civil War Garland takes on his most ambitious story yet, writing and directing a vision of what it would look like if America's Culture War explodes into an all-out Civil War - and not in some distant dystopian future, but right here, and right now.

By the end of the film, that sentiment persists, as we're left to wonder if a nation so violently divided could ever be healed again - even with significant symbolic action or "victory," on one side. More terrifying yet is the notion that all this horror and carnage is bubbling just below the surface of our current society, waiting to make this film all too real.

Civil War will not be an easy film to engage with, but it is an important one to consider.

Fallout TV Series Review

Here's what ComicBook gaming editor Tanner Dedmon said in his Fallout TV series review:

Even where the Fallout show slips on occasion with an unneeded kiss or a questionable encounter, time and time again, I kept marveling at how authentic the world felt. The original story told in Fallout is paramount to this trait since it lets us focus on the characters, world, and narrative rather than getting hung up on shot-for-shot remakes of key moments. Fallout is technically canon, according to Bethesda's Todd Howard, so it'll be under the microscope for nitpicking and "well actually" moments, but even when the show takes leaps to expand on the world, it always feels deserved.

Xbox Game Pass Users Say Horror Game Leaving in 3 Days Is "One of the Best Stories in Video Games" https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/xbox-game-pass-gamepass-horror-soma/ Fri, 12 Apr 2024 17:11:00 +0000 Tyler Fischer 2884de21-a6d8-4f87-9e6e-d61a0bf2c230

Xbox Game Pass users claim a horror game available via the subscription service, but leaving soon, is "one of the best stories in video games." In this case, leaving soon refers to a game leaving on April 15. This means, at the moment of publishing, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PC users have three days left to play the horror game in question. Thankfully, the game is roughly only 10 hours long, so this is plenty of time to download, play, and beat the game before it leaves Xbox Game Pass. Meanwhile, as long as it remains available via Xbox Game Pass, subscribers can purchase it for $24 rather than $30, thanks to a 20% discount.

As for the horror game in question, it hails from 2015. Upon release, it garnered an 84 on Metacritic, and it is widely considered one of the best horror games of the previous console generation thanks to its great writing, which comes together to create a very good story, something you don't often get in horror games. If you haven't connected the dots yet, the horror game is SOMA from Frictional Games, a Swedish studio best known for the Amnesia series.

"Give SOMA a try before it leaves Game Pass, one of the best stories in video games in my opinion," reads the title of the post, which is one of the top posts on the Xbox Game Pass Reddit page this week, with 200 votes up.

"Agree with that. And if someone doesn't like horror and hiding it's totally fine to play it one the safe mode. The story alone is worth it. Just excellent writing," reads one of the top comments on the post. "As a scientific researcher at the NHV foundation, most of our staff played this game and it was amazing and the science behind all of it is very fascinating and creepy, we love it," reads another comment.

"SOMA is a sci-fi horror game from Frictional Games, the creators of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. It is an unsettling story about identity, consciousness, and what it means to be human," reads an official description of the game. "The radio is dead, food is running out, and the machines have started to think they are people. Underwater facility Pathos-II has suffered an intolerable isolation and we're going to have to make some tough decisions. What can be done? What makes sense? What is left to fight for?"

Civil War Review: A Terrifying Vision for All of Us https://comicbook.com/movies/news/civil-war-movie-reviews-2024-alex-garland-kirsten-dunst/ Fri, 12 Apr 2024 17:04:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 4e93fd3c-935b-4e5b-b4a9-692536f8e975

Alex Garland is known for poking at viewers' thoughts and beliefs, even as he thrills them with unforgettable genre movie experiences. Whether it's writing films like 28 Days Later, Dredd, or Sunshine, or writing and directing films like Ex Machina and Annihilation, Garland is one of the top filmmakers operating at the level of cult-following hitmaker. With Civil War Garland takes on his most ambitious story yet, writing and directing a vision of what it would look like if America's Culture War explodes into an all-out Civil War - and not in some distant dystopian future, but right here, and right now.

The film follows a world-weary photojournalist named Lee (Kirsten Dunst) and her reporter partner Joel (Wagner Moura) who are covering a pivotal campaign of the Second American Civil War, which is being fought by multiple succeeding factions of the country. Lee and Joel get a lead that the White House will soon fall, and The President (Nick Offerman) will be captured by the rival WF military faction. They intended to be the first to report it, and start making plans to get from NYC to the front lines in Washington D.C., without getting killed along the way.

civil-war-2024-movie-cast-reviews.jpg
(Photo: A24)

Lee and Joel quickly get saddled with two additional passengers: their mentor, veteran reporter Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson), and Jessie (Cailee Spaeny), a young would-be photojournalist who idolizes Lee. As the journey progresses, the group is forced to witness what America has become during the war, realizing the soul of the nation - as well as their own souls - may never be the same.

Civil War marks the most ambitious and large-scale project that Alex Garland has ever taken on. There's sure to be a furious debate of the socio-political implications of the film, but what can't be debated is the visual accomplishment here, which deserves the scope of an IMAX screen. Garland and his longtime collaborator, cinematographer Rob Hardy (Annihilation, Ex Machina, Mission: Impossible - Fallout) strike a deep chord of resonance by turning our current Americana landscape (from the cookie-cutter strip malls to the urban centers, small-town suburbs, and rural regions) into hauntingly real wartime landscapes. There is imagery in Civil War that will be impossible to forget - whether its bodies blown to bits in a block of midtown Manhattan, bodies strung up in a car wash, or carnage littering the sides of the highway; all familiar settings turned into war zones.

That is arguably the goal of the filmmakers: in a modern world where visual content is the biggest motivator, Civil War forces everyone to reconcile with a vision of what war across America would truly look like. It's a major blow to idealized socio-political fantasies of one side "winning," or "being right," - and how ugly the "fix" truly is for getting rid of unwanted neighbors or purging oppositional beliefs. The script by Garland seems to be a simple "Point-A -to-Point-B" quest through a hellish terrain, but it's a much smarter and more layered parable than that, which holds everyone accountable for division and violence. It's no mistake that our protagonists are characters wrestling with the role of witnessing and creating content out of such harrowing events - nor does the film let them (or us) off the hook for the voyeuristic thrill of watching carnage as entertainment.

kirsten-dunst-in-civil-war-2024-movie.jpg
(Photo: A24)

There will be a lot of debate about the political commentary of this film, no doubt, and Garland is not immune to leaking some of his own bias into it. That said, as an outsider looking in, the UK-born filmmaker quite purposefully characterizes this version of America's civil conflict as having a dizzying amount of different sides, factions, and random combatants to keep track of - to the point that any "heroes" or "villains" become indistinguishable. The reporters' journey reveals that even in strife, America remains a pastiche of left, right, center, 'Who cares?' beliefs, all colliding. Some people ignore the war; others could care less about sides, just survival; others (medical and social workers) care about service and care of everyone involved; some take up arms and choose to govern things themselves. Dunst's character hammers home that all war is hell, and all battlefields are soul-crushing hellscapes, with no true "victories" to be found - socially, politically, or spiritually.

With all that going on, it's hard to look at Civil War in the traditional terms of a movie. The characters are left rather opaque (mostly brushstrokes of implication), but each cast member has a solid grip on the full scope of their character, conveying much with just looks, gestures, and sparse dialogue. Dunst and Spaeny are a compelling duo, conveying an entire subplot about the personal cost of ambition, fame, and exploitation in pursuit of seemingly noble goals - and how it influences the next generation. Moura and Henderson are great foils for their female co-stars, and certain actors that appear (like Breaking Bad's Jesse Plemons) leave big impressions during their brief vignettes.

Alien: Romulus Footage Revealed at CinemaCon https://comicbook.com/movies/news/alien-romulus-footage-revealed-at-cinemacon-ridley-scott-facehuggers/ Fri, 12 Apr 2024 00:01:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak f9e71f09-6665-41fa-ba4e-8a6ec0f491e2

Disney's presentation has been a big one at CinemaCon today as the company shared footage of films such as Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Deadpool & Wolverine, Captain America: Brave New World, and more. The studio also shared a look at Alien: Romulus from director Fede ?lvarez (Evil Dead, Don't Breathe). During the event, the presenters shared a message from original Alien director and Alien: Romulus producer, Ridley Scott: "It's f*cking great." They also revealed some footage from the highly-anticipated movie.

Alien: Romulus is a sci-fi/horror-thriller that is taking the phenomenally successful Alien franchise back to its roots. You can read a description here: "While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe. The film stars Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Agatha Christie's Murder is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), Aileen Wu. Fede ?lvarez (Evil Dead, Don't Breathe) directs from a screenplay he wrote with frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues (Don't Breathe 2) based on characters created by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett."

You can read the CinemaCon description for Alien: Romulus below:

Alien: Romulus Footage Description Revealed:

During the CinemaCon presentation, Alvarez and Scott sent a message and introduced a special look at Alien: Romulus. The footage begins with two young girls discovering a body. Another man is looking around the ship, which is glowing with red lights while encased samples begin to move.

A piece of technology shows that there is a light that can see through body parts, showing ligaments and bones. The aforementioned man has a button on his neck, which is pushed, prompting him to freeze and stare up at the ceiling while his eyes roll back and he reboots. Meanwhile, aliens are hatching in front of him and dropping into the water at his feet. The rest of the crew notices something swimming by but are unaware... until one of them gets knocked over.

The creature jumps out and tries to hug his face, but gets launched into the glass. Another jumps off of a frozen Andy (David Jonsson) onto another's face, jabbing its legs into his mouth and eyes. The crew tries to close doors behind them to escape, but one of the aliens gets through, prompting them to swat it back into glass, which cracks and lets them all in.

In the end, one of the crew gets wrecked in the face by one of the facehuggers. In another clip, a character is not feeling well and grips their chest. The device to see through the body is used, showing the alien trying to break out of their ribs. They collapse, foam at the mouth, convulse, and accidentally kick the ship into motion before the alien bursts out of their chest. It's a bloody, visceral moment. The ship continues floating until it eventually crashes into a bigger one.

Finally, the presentation shows a teaser trailer filled with chaos, full-grown Xenomorphs, and terror.

Alien: Romulus hits theaters on August 16th.

Dead by Daylight Players Warned Ahead of Changing Cosmetic Prices https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/dead-by-daylight-dbd-cosmetic-price-changes/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 21:00:00 +0000 Marc Deschamps 15ff1ead-df0e-4a6b-a366-d36e0079a62d

Behaviour Interactive has announced some major changes will be coming to Dead by Daylight's cosmetic pricing as part of the game's 7.7.0 update. Notably, the studio will be "standardizing Cosmetic prices for most rarities to create a more consistent experience." What this means is that pricing for a lot of different items will actually be reduced, with more than 130 cosmetics seeing price drops. That change will go into effect on April 23rd, but Behaviour Interactive has warned that three cosmetic items will also be going up in price that day, so players might want to purchase them ahead of time.

"While this will lead to price reductions for close to 130 Cosmetics, we've identified three Cosmetics that will receive a price increase as a result: The Ghost Face Classic Mask (Head), The Clown's Mr Puddles Cosmetic (Outfit) and Feng Min's Demon Slayer Cosmetic (Outfit). We wanted to let you know ahead of time so you have time to purchase those at their current price before the increase on April 23rd," the company wrote on Twitter.

Why are Prices Changing for Dead by Daylight?

Those few increases are a bit unfortunate, but it's hard for Dead by Daylight players to be too upset; on the whole, prices are dropping, and anyone that wants to buy the few cosmetics that are increasing in price has a little bit of lead time to do so. The announcement has led to some initial confusion among players, but with all rarities being lumped in the same category, it should actually make things a lot clearer. That's a good thing for the future of the game, as it won't look as daunting to new players, and it will make for a better overall system.

Dead by Daylight Discounts

Speaking of lower prices, those that have yet to try Dead by Daylight have a perfect opportunity to do so right now. The Gold Edition of the game is currently discounted by up to 50% on Xbox, PlayStation and PC. Readers should be advised that these prices do vary by storefront. The Gold Edition is 50% off on Xbox, bringing it down to $34.99, but on PlayStation, it's priced at $41.99. However, some DLC packs have been made cheaper on PlayStation, including the Hellraiser Chapter and Forged in Fog, both of which are currently 50% off. Potential buyers might want to shop around for the best price, and pick out the option or platform that's best suited to them.

Of course, Game Pass subscribers do have the option of playing Dead by Daylight free with their subscription, so Xbox fans might want to try it there first before committing to purchase the game.

How do you feel about these cosmetic price changes coming to Dead by Daylight? Do you think standardizing the pricing for all cosmetics is a good thing? Share your thoughts with me directly on Twitter at @Marcdachamp or on Instagram at @Dachampgaming!

Scary Movie Reboot in Development at Paramount https://comicbook.com/movies/news/scary-movie-reboot-film-new-original-cast-paramount/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 19:03:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw e7293f43-a6bf-42a9-bcc9-e2cdd500916a

The Scary Movie series is getting a reboot with Fast and Furious' Neal H. Moritz serving as producer. Paramount and Miramax are partnering on the film, which is expected to start shooting this fall.

The announcement about the Scary Movie reboot came during Paramount's panel at CinemaCon 2024; Miramax will reportedly finance the film while Paramount handles distribution. Those are the only known details at this point; no word on casting plans, a director, a story, or what kind of horror films this new Scary Movie will be skewering with its spoof comedy.

scary-movie-3-wallpaper.jpg
(Photo: Dimension Films)

The original Scary Movie (2000) did for spoofing horror what The Naked Gun had done for spoofing police mystery procedurals. However, The Wayans Brothers brought the sensibilities of their In Living Color sketch comedy show to Scary Movie, stitching together comedic vignettes that spoofed any number of different horror films (or pop-culture films in general) - usually based on some overarching theme, or horror movie trend happening at the time. Scary Movie went on for four additional sequels after the 2000 original

Therein may lie the best chance that this Scary Movie reboot has of doing something familiar yet fresh. Horror movies have seen a lot of legacy sequels acting as soft reboots of famous franchises, mixing fresh new faces and veteran stars of a franchise. Examples range from Halloween (2018), The Exorcist: Believer, or the Scream series. Scream V and Scream VI already took shots at the "requel" trend in horror, but Scary Movie has a wide opportunity to do it with a much bigger comedic slant. There are major stars of the franchise (like Anna Faris, Marlon Wayans, Regina Hall, and Shawn Wayans, Carmen Electra, Kevin Hart, Simon Rex, and Charlie Sheen) who could all make a return cameo - and plenty of young stars who can be great stand-ins for recent popular horror movie characters.

If horror requels aren't a prime subject for spoofing, there are newer trends like the haunted toy movies (M3GAN, Imaginary, Five Nights at Freddy's); the trend of horror movie universes like The Conjuring Universe and all its spinoffs (Annabelle, The Nun, etc.), and the more elevated prestige horror films that are released.

The Scary Movie reboot could also take a hard look in the mirror and do some comedic reflecting on reboots themselves, getting hilariously meta about the fact that the film itself is a reboot. Film fans have arguably been waiting for someone to come along and really turn the frustration with rehashed creative ideas into cathartic laughs.

American Horror Story: Delicate Episode 7 Recap With Spoilers: "Ave Hestia" https://comicbook.com/horror/news/american-horror-story-delicate-episode-7-recap-with-spoilers-ave-hestia-fx/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 03:15:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 374aca71-1e53-4957-a7fd-905e9afb748d

American Horror Story: Delicate returned last week and brought some major developments in Anna Victoria Alcott's (Emma Roberts) pregnancy and life. Last week saw Anna have some horrifying moments with her pregnancy -- including claws seemingly protrude from her stomach -- as well as further increasing of her paranoia when it comes to the weird things happening to her. The episode also saw the director of Anna's movie kill himself and Dex's mother appear to kill herself as well -- though under very suspicious circumstances. This week, the series delves into origins of what Anna is going through by exploring the story of Dex's first wife.

Spoilers for American Horror Story: Delicate, "Ave Hestia" beyond this point. Read on only if you want to know.

What Happens in American Horror Story: Delicate Episode 7?

Western Europe, 42 AD. A woman is laboring in a barn and struggling. She gets a knife and cuts herself open to deliver her own child. However, It's not just one. Another child half-climbs from her womb and she holds them both with joy before dying. Sometime later, a mysterious figure clad in black arrives, though, and resurrects her. The woman is Ivy.

Brooklyn, 2013. It's Dex's anniversary with his first wife. He's brought her a puppy as a gift, but she's not super excited about it. She says they aren't ready for a dog and that she doesn't know if she ever wants kids. She goes to work at her restaurant where she thrives. As she's giving her staff a pep talk before opening, she sees the black clad figure outside. Once the restaurant closes, she locks herself in a supply room and goes into a secret room where she has set up her own altar and rituals.

As she's leaving, she finds Sonja, her sister, sitting there waiting for her. Sonja wants to play some sort of game with a knife and promises to leave if she can beat her. Addie tells Sonja that she is never coming back even though Sonja tells her that "they" need her. Addie says she left and knows too much to ever go back. Sonja says she will always be one of them and she was born into it. Addie stabs herself in her hand and passes out.

Galway, Ireland, 1253

Addie confronts her mother, Ivy -- Addie and Sonja are the twins -- about lying for "her" good. It does not go well. Ivy tells her that they cannot create anything because they are women, they can only choose to be happy or to tell the truth. Ivy apologizes for hurting Addie and gives herself and Sonja matching marks, binding them together forever.

Brooklyn 2013

Addie is at home and Dex is suspicious of what has happened to her and talks to Talia about it. He also reaches out to his father who, upon hanging up says his wife is crazy. When Dex's mother disagrees, he yells at her and tells her not to contradict him. The father says he's cutting Dex and his wife off. He also tells his wife not to contradict him and then he chloroforms her. Later, Addie goes with Talia to buy jewelry and Talia reveals she sold her business for a billion dollars and she's going to invest in Dex's gallery and give them a lifeline now that they've been cut off.

At Hestia, Nicolette pays Addie a visit and tries to convince her to come back, showing her teeth for what seems to be some sort of creatures that the women birth. Nicolette leaves, but it flusters Addie who later stops to buy a pregnancy test and it's positive, though she lies to Dex about it.

Dex and Addie have dinner with Talia and her partner to celebrate the new gallery. They take photos as a group, but Addie notices her mother in the background of the photos. After everyone leaves, she tells Dex she loves him and sends him home so she can clean up herself. At home, Dex finds the pregnancy test. He calls her but gets her voicemail. She's in her secret room so he calls his parents instead but gets a busy signal as the phone is off the hook. Dex goes to his parents' house and finds black clad figures doing something to his mother while his father has sex with another one. The figures drug him and his father demands they erase his memory. Meanwhile, Addie's mother, sister, and Nicolette restrain her -- and there is a mystery black clad figure as well who is revealed to be Talia. They reveal that Talia is going to pair Dex with his new wife who will birth the "purest" one yet. Ivy cuts Addie open and the women smear themselves in her blood before setting her on fire, killing her.

Chucky Crossed Over With M3GAN in New Season 3 Episode, But Not How You Think https://comicbook.com/horror/news/chucky-m3gan-crossover-season-3-new-episode/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 02:58:00 +0000 Spencer Perry 9cac2bb5-2618-4bb6-84bf-bc8b9d50f77e

Chucky season 3 spoilers follow! Ever since the first trailer for M3GAN premiered, horror fans have been contemplating how Chucky would react to her. The biggest killer doll on the block has no qualms about competition, going out of his way to tweet about M3GAN leading up to and after the release of her movie. Teases have been made along the way, since Universal Pictures is the distributor for both Chucky and M3GAN, that there could be something brewing, and fans just got what's likely to be the closest thing to a Chucky/M3GAN crossover.

Episode 3.05 of Chucky sees Brad Dourif's tiny killer doll now officially dying. Mostly stuck in bed and unable to move, Chucky finds himself with some free time where he begins channel surfing. While cruising through cable, Chucky starts to find various other killer doll movies playing, and provides commentary like only her can.

First Chucky comes across The Boy, the 2015 horror film featuring the porcelain doll Brahms, which Chucky reacts to by saying, "what a f-cking joke." Next Chucky flips the channel to another creepy doll movie, 2007's Dead Silence, Chucky responds to seeing footage from this movie (directed by James Wan) by adding, "and this one, can't even get a franchise." Finally, Chucky changes to a third channel where he sees M3GAN, not only is he watching M3GAN on TV but it's at the scene where M3GAN does her iconic dance. Chucky responds to this by saying: "Oh god, no, kill me now, that little bitch she stole my movies." To cap it off, Chucky gives the TV the finger and adds, "F-ck you Muh-THREE-gen."

"He really has to contend with legitimate new contenders to the throne like M3GAN and Annabelle," Chucky creator Don Mancini previously said about a crossover with M3GAN. "He has to deal with that place for himself in the pop culture world and that's how we really touch the ground with Chucky. We give this off-the-wall character a crisis that has the sting of real pain and real life. But it just makes him angrier and you know what happens when Chucky gets angry."

Mancini previously revealed this to Variety back in October, and in retrospect it's likely he already knew that this little gag with other killer doll movies was in the planning stages. Season 3 of Chucky has already seen him crossover with The Amityville Horror (in a round about way) and now shown Chucky give the finger to M3GAN. With three episodes left in season 3, who else might Chucky meet?

Chucky season 3 airs Wednesdays at 10 PM ET on both SYFY and USA Network with the series returning on Wednesday, April 10.

Where is Chucky streaming?

The first two seasons of Chucky are available for streaming on two different platforms, both Peacock and Shudder. All sixteen episodes of the series, including both seasons 1 and 2, can be streamed on each of these services. Unlike previous seasons of Chucky however, wherein the entire season would have to premiere on cable before it began streaming, the new episodes of Chucky season 3 will be available for streaming the next day. After Chucky season 3's episodes air on SYFY and USA Network on Wednesdays, they'll be available to stream the very next day on Peacock.

Speak No Evil Trailer: James McAvoy Stars in Blumhouse's New Horror Movie https://comicbook.com/horror/news/speak-no-evil-trailer-james-mcavoy-new-movie/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 01:41:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 2a7b1971-8de5-43e6-8a57-11aac28da579 See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. It's a phrase seemingly old as time itself, and it's one horror filmmakers have loved to pick apart since the introduction of the motion picture. The latest film to tap into it is Blumhouse's Speak No Evil, the James McAvoy picture set to hit release later this year. As a part of CinemaCon festivities on Wednesday, Universal and Blumhouse revealed its first look at the thriller.

In it, McAvoy's Paddy, his wife Ciara (Aisling Franciosi), and their mute son Ant (Dan Hough) welcome Louise (Mackenzie Davis) and Ben Dalton (Scoot McNairy) into their charming estate, which soon "warps into a snarled psychological nightmare," according to Universal's official synopsis. See the trailer for yourself below.

The film was written and direct by James Watkins and serves as a remake to the 2022 Danish film Gaesterne.

Speak No Evil stars Mackenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Fate) and SAG award-winner Scoot McNairy (Argo) as American couple Louise and Ben Dalton, who, along with their 11-year-old daughter Agnes (Alix West Lefler; The Good Nurse, Riverdale) accept the weekend-holiday invitation of Paddy (McAvoy), his wife Ciara (Aisling Franciosi; Game of Thrones, The Fall) and their mute son Ant (newcomer Dan Hough).

Speak No Evil is set to hit theaters on September 13th.

The Five Nights at Freddy's Sequel Is Officially In The Works https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/the-five-nights-at-freddys-sequel-is-officially-in-the-works/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 00:31:00 +0000 Hannah Adkins 6ab118a3-684f-4251-a100-4ea8cec4d6aa

A sequel to last year's Five Nights at Freddy's adaptation has been officially announced by Universal Pictures at CinemaCon. The official announcement comes just a day after Blumhouse's Jason Blum shared a photo to their social media accounts featuring a Jim Henson's Creature Shop employee hard at work on some of the characters audiences can expect to see in the sequel, teasing just a bit of what's to come in the hit horror movie's sequel when it releases Fall 2025.

With a $20 million budget, a lot of which was delegated to Jim Henson's Creature Shop to bring the animatronics to life, Five Nights at Freddy's was able to win over existing fans of the franchise while bringing in new fans to fall in love with the unique world of Freddy Fazbear. Despite underwhelming initial reviews who expressed the film may contain too much content to grip those who don't already love the games' established lore, Five Nights at Freddy's earned nearly $300 million worldwide.

Blumhouse is a reoccuring name at CinemaCon this week, as the production company was also included in Lionsgate's presentation earlier today where it was announced the two will partner to remake The Blair Witch Project. Per the CinemaCon panel, Blumhouse will also help re-imagine additional titles from Lionsgate's extensive library.

Five Nights at Freddy's 2

As for what was teased yesterday, the photo shared by Blumhouse appears to showcase the Creature Shop working on one of the iconic, upgraded version of one of the mainstay Freddy's characters, Foxy, who eventually becomes known as Mangle in this iteration. In addition to Mangle's unique endoskeleton, parts to Toy Bonnie also appear to be on the workbench, which means the Five Nights at Freddy's movie sequel is shaping up to feature characters from Five Nights at Freddy's 2 the game.

In the game sequel the animatronics from Five Nights at Freddy's are improved for reopening in 1987 following the events that occurred at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, replacing the original withered versions of the Fazbear Entertainment characters. As the name would indicate, the new versions of Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy resemble toys with their plastic appearance, round and rosy cheeks, larger eyes, and eyelashes - all changes that make the band resemble dolls. The updated versions all have functional fingers as well, adding to the horrors they're capable of. In addition to the core four band members getting their own upgrades, Five Nights at Freddy's also introduces new animatronics - The Puppet, Balloon Boy, and JJ - which could be included as well.

As for what the sequel will entail exactly, more news is needed to confirm the direction Blumhouse and Universal will take the feature. For the games, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 serves as a prequel to the original game and a sequel to Five Nights at Freddy's 4, taking place in November of 1987. It's possible that Blumhouse could decide to show us a chapter from Freddy Fazbear's Pizza's past for the second movie in the franchise, but the studios could opt to take a different route in telling the Fazbear stories.

Candyman Director Nia DaCosta in Talks to Direct Second Film in 28 Years Later Trilogy https://comicbook.com/horror/news/candyman-director-nia-dacosta-in-talks-to-direct-second-film-in-28-years-later-trilogy/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 23:41:00 +0000 Nicole Drum b4da6f14-438c-482c-85e2-f46c5a4b1338

Candyman and The Marvels director Nia DaCosta may be joining the 28 Years Later franchise. Deadline reports that DaCosta is in talks to direct the second film in the new 28 Years Later franchise from Sony Pictures. Danny Boyle is already set to return to direct the first film in the trilogy. Per the report, the deal is not yet set in stone, but talks are ongoing. Boyle, Alex Garland, Andrew Macdonald, and Peter Rice are set to produce along with Bernie Bellew while 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy will executive produce.

It's also reported that Boyle is expected to direct the first film in the trilogy later this year with the second to film immediately after. Garland is set to write both films. No additional details about plot or casting for the films has been announced. As for DaCosta, she notably served as the filmmaker for Universal's 2021 Candyman follow up. She also directed and co-wrote The Marvels. her next film is MGM's Tessa Thompson starring Hedda, a reimagination of the Henrik Ibsen's stage play, Hedda Gabler.

What Do We Know About 28 Years Later?

The new films were announced earlier this year with Sony winning the bidding war for the rights to the films which are a follow up to 2002's 28 Days Later. Boyle and Garland will produce alongside original producer Andrew Macdonald and former head of Fox Searchlight Pictures Peter Rice. Murphy, who starred in the original film, is set to return as an executive producer, though he has previously said that he would never rule out returning in another capacity. The project is one that Garland previously said has been long discussed.

"A few years ago, an idea materialized in my head for would be really 28 Years Later," Garland said at the time. "Danny always liked the idea. So, we're talking about it quite seriously, quite diligently. If He doesn't want to direct it himself, I'll be well up for it if we can execute a similarly good idea."

What Is 28 Days Later About?

28 Days Later is a British post-apocalyptic horror film that follows Jim (Cillian Murphy), a bicycle courier who wakes up from a coma only to find that the accidental release of a highly contagious and aggression-inducing virus has caused a total breakdown of society. The film also starred Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Megan Burns, and Brendan Gleeson. 28 Days Later was very well received by both critics and audiences alike and is credited for revitalizing the zombie horror genre. Numerous films with zombie themes followed, each of them showcasing zombies as something a bit more agile and terrifying than the previous depictions of slow, trudging, cumbersome creatures.

The film also got a sequel in 2007 with 28 Weeks Later, with that film set after the events of the first film, following efforts to create a safe zone in London after two young siblings break protocol to find a photograph of their mother and end up reintroducing the Rage Virus to the safe zone in the process. That film starred Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, Imogen Poots, Idris Elba, and others. It was also both a critical and commercial success.

The Incredible Hulk #11 Review: Another Great Chapter for The Immortal Hulk's Successor https://comicbook.com/comics/news/incredible-hulk-11-review-marvel-comics-johnson/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 14:00:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely 1bcf22f9-efe9-4e75-b0f5-3342d489f289 Following The Immortal Hulk would've been an impossible task for just about any creative team. Al Ewing and Joe Bennett's horror-adjacent saga about the Bruce Banner's demons was an instant all-timer for Marvel, almost unanimously considered one of the best Hulk runs in comic book history. Where do you go after 50 issues of near-perfection? After a short, controversial detour of another Hulk series, writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson has arrived with the answer.

Treating Hulk as a Marvel stand-in for wayward icons like Hellboy and the Goon was an absolutely outstanding decision by Kennedy. This run has leaned into spiritual horrors and monster tales in each of its arcs, giving Hulk no shortage of memorable villains and intriguing character beats. In The Incredible Hulk #11, the story of the villainous "Frozen Charlotte" comes to a satisfying end.

The "Frozen Charlotte" storyline, which began in The Incredible Hulk #9, sees Hulk and Charlie make their way to New Orleans, the most haunted city in the country. While away from Hulk, Charlie gets spooked by a man in the streets and takes refuge in an old woman's shop. That woman, however, turns out to be the real danger, a powerful sorceress serial killer who has been stuffing young souls into antique dolls and trapping them for eternity.

This entire arc has been a departure of sorts for the series, thanks in large part to a temporary change in artists. Danny Earls took over from Nic Klein for "Frozen Charlotte" and brought a completely different style to the book, making the story arc feel unique to its New Orleans setting. Earls creates such an eerie atmosphere with his backdrops and settings. New Orleans is a city that you can feel breathing when you step foot on those cobblestone streets, and Earls pays so much attention to the details in his depiction of the city that it translates wonderfully to the page. There's also a pulpy element to the character expressions in Earls' work that fits this kind of story. It invokes some of the same feelings of Mike Mignola's work at times, leaving a little more interpretation up to the reader.

Frozen Charlotte's journey in Hulk started a little weaker than some of the other monsters we have seen in this run, but her finale is maybe the strongest exit of the villains so far. She's such an interesting contrast to Hulk, not just in terms of her visual aesthetic or power set, but also when it comes to her place in existence. She has ties to angels and the devil, and her purpose for the doll entrapment could be construed as noble, in a way. It makes her a more worthy adversary than most.

It wouldn't be a killer comic without a good hook, and The Incredible Hulk #11 ends with a great one. That final page is more than enough to keep the series in your pull box, even though the twist is really just the cherry on top of another wonderful issue. The Incredible Hulk is the last Marvel title any comics reader should be sleeping on right now.

Indie Fishing Game Dredge Getting a Live Action-Movie Adaptation https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/indie-fishing-game-dredge-getting-a-live-action-movie-adaptation/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 04:58:00 +0000 Hannah Adkins cd111d73-7eb7-40dd-bb1c-9a5c699fe6e4

Critically-acclaimed indie video game Dredge will join the list of video games to be adapted into a live-action film, as developers Black Salt Games have teamed up with production company Story Kitchen to bring the game to the screen in another format. Dredge launched in March 2023 and had a fantastic initial six months, selling over 1 million copies during that period and completely shattered expectations Black Salt Games had in regards to sales. The game was nominated at the Golden Joystick Awards and The Game Awards, as well as the BAFTA Games Awards which approaches its live ceremony on April 11.

ComicBook's 4/5 review of the game states, "Dredge is a fun indie game that explores the cosmic horror genre in a unique fashion by embracing one of the recurring motifs found in Lovecraft's works - the ocean."

What To Expect

In Dredge, players take on the role of a fisherman who is exploring remote islands for fish and hidden treasures, meeting island residents who will assign quests while you learn new skills, upgrade your boat, and more. On the surface it's a relaxing, peaceful fishing game, but when sun sets in the game and a thick fog rolls over the water, the world shifts as players encounter Lovecraftian horrors. Some of these monsters include a Giant Crab, Ghost Boat, Deep-Sea Tentacles, and more, and while you're continually warned against going out at night by various characters that certainly doesn't stop you.

A great feature that contributes to the overall experience of Dredge is the core mechanic of a "panic" meter, which overall adds to the atmosphere of the game at night and immerses the player in the experience as the fisherman's panic rises or falls due to a variety of factors. While this mechanic may not be able to be implemented as a copy-and-paste addition to live-action, it's certainly safe to say that the film will seek to raise your heart rate when nightfalls.

The Dredge adaptation is being described as "The Sixth Sense on the water," and "A grounded atmospheric cosmic horror blend of H.P. Lovecraft and Ernest Hemingway," which would indicate the live-action adaptation seeks to replicate a the blend of genres the game has.

Video game to movie adaptations are a popular move for studios right now, with massive successes seen in recent years with The Last of Us, Super Mario Bros., and the impending premiere of Prime Video's Fallout series which is highly anticipated by existing fans and newcomers alike. Horror games have always been popular to make the leap from media types with historic adaptations including Silent Hill, Resident Evil, and Five Nights at Freddy's more recently, with more will be joining the list as Until Dawn, Dead by Daylight, and likely more in the future.

Have you played Dredge already? If you haven't, the game is available now on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. If you're already a fan, how do you feel about a live-action adaptation? Let us know in the comments or chat with me about Dredge on X @amazingspidrhan!

Chucky: Devon Sawa Reflects on Becoming Don Mancini's Muse, "I Let Him Think About How He's Going To Kill Me" https://comicbook.com/horror/news/chucky-devon-sawa-reflects-on-becoming-don-mancinis-muse/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 01:35:00 +0000 Spencer Perry 97af87fa-8d23-4047-bafc-adc06031b77b

Since he joined Chucky in its first season, fan-favorite actor Devon Sawa went from a newcomer to a franchise veteran. Having now played four different characters in Chucky's three seasons (five if you count when he was Chucky himself for about four seconds), Sawa has become a full part of the Chucky family, and something like a muse for creator Don Mancini. Speaking with ComicBook.com for the upcoming second half of Chucky season 3, we asked Devon Sawa if he knew way back in season 1 that he would achieve this status in the series, allowing him the chance to open up about how it really happened.

"I'm glad I didn't just because season one, I mean, it would've changed a lot," Sawa revealed. "Season one, I got the audition. I knew it was these two brothers and they're dying and that's it. I knew I was dying in episode one and I knew I was dying in episode seven, and so you're just at peace with it. You're like, okay, so I'm in these episodes, I die here. I'm going to have fun with this season. I'm going to go up to Toronto. I'm going to kick ass, and that's it, and I'll go find something after that. And so when he approached me after I died and said, Hey, would you like to come back next year? It was flattering and awesome. Now it's a little different. Now it's on the end of season two. It was like, oh, well, I'm probably coming back. it's been a treat. It's been a treat that he does this."

Since he's been on the series, Devon Sawa has been killed off in spectacular ways. The very first episode of Chucky that he appeared in saw him electrocuted by Chucky, with the killer doll using his own vomit as a conduit for the shock, with his second character in season 1 beaten to death by his son using, what else, the Chucky doll. Season 2 saw Devon Sawa's character literally explode, and with four episodes remaining Chucky season 3 who's to say what fate awaits him. Sawa confirmed that he's never gone to Mancini and pitched a death though, allowing the Chucky creator that privilege all on his own.

"Don gets so much joy out of coming up with these deaths," Sawa said. "I remember him, he had a random idea. There was a different idea for season three before it became the White House, and I remember him running up to me with this idea of how I was going to die in it. He's like, I came up with a really good idea of how you die in season three. And he told me, and he looked legitimately very excited about this death and how he was going to kill me. So I give him that joy. I don't suggest anything. I let him think about how he's going to kill me."

Chucky season 3 airs Wednesdays at 9 PM ET on both SYFY and USA Network with the series returning on Wednesday, April 10.

The Walking Dead Creator Scrapped a Comic Prequel https://comicbook.com/comics/news/the-walking-dead-prequel-comic-robert-kirkman-shane-lori-carl-grimes/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 23:45:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 0ed34563-e34c-40e2-a514-e08c670c5043

The Walking Dead spanned 193 issues across 32 volumes, but there was nearly a prequel volume exploring the days before "Days Gone Bye." The six-issue first volume of Robert Kirkman's zombie comic began with small town sheriff's deputy Rick Grimes waking up from a coma one month into the apocalypse, sending Rick on an undead odyssey from Cynthiana, Kentucky, to Atlanta, Georgia, to find his wife and son. By the final page of issue #2, Rick reunited with his family in a camp outside walker-swarmed Atlanta along with his police partner -- and best friend -- Shane Walsh.

Shane was escorting Carl and Lori to her parents' house in Atlanta, only for a flashback in issue #7 to reveal the moment they arrived to find the city overrun by the dead. It was during this time that Shane and Lori began an affair that resulted in pregnancy. As it turns out, Kirkman conceived a Walking Dead prequel comic set during that eventful 349-mile trek from Cynthiana to Atlanta with original series artist Tony Moore, who ended his run as interior illustrator after the first six issues.

the-walking-dead-deluxe-7.png

"I had always considered doing a volume 0 that would be Shane, Lori and Carl's trip from Cynthiana, KY to Atlanta, GA," Kirkman wrote in the Letter Hacks section of The Walking Dead Deluxe #85. "I even wrote a few pages of a script. There was a time early on I'd thought of it as a cool project to do with Tony Moore, but in the end it just never came together. At this point, we'll probably never see it."

Kirkman eventually penned a prequel -- Here's Negan, a standalone volume exploring Negan's origins at the onset of the zombie apocalypse -- and 2020's Negan Lives one-shot, the only Walking Dead issue written by Kirkman since Image Comics published the long-running book's final issue in 2019. In a previous issue of TWD Deluxe, Kirkman cast doubt on ever reviving the series but didn't rule out future one-shots or a self-contained spin-off from another writer.

"I gave 16 years of my life to this world. I may dabble in it at some point in the future, but I doubt I'll ever return to do a full series," Kirkman wrote in a recent installment of Letter Hacks. "But... I'd never say never."

Saw 11 Delayed a Year https://comicbook.com/horror/news/saw-11-delayed-new-release-date-revealed/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 23:36:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt c1612307-9b34-41bf-a5db-284fbe16dae2

You'll have to wait just a little bit longer to see Jigsaw dismantle humans in the most absurd of ways. Tuesday afternoon, Lionsgate unveiled Saw XI is being delayed significantly. Instead of hitting theaters this September, the follow-up to the well-received Saw X will release September 2025. In fact, the movie's nearly delayed a full year--it was originally scheduled this September 27th, and it's now hitting theaters September 26, 2025.

Saw X helmer Kevin Greutert is set to return to direct the picture, returning after directing Saw VI, Saw 3D, and Saw X.

"I think there is regret," Greutert previously told The Hollywood Reporter of killing Jigsaw off too early. "It would be a lot easier to make these films if that hadn't happened, but at the same time, the first three were largely considered the best of the Saw series. There was a kind of integrity, I think, to really trying to make a trilogy and nothing more. And decisively killing the character off, that integrity, as it was perceived at the time at least, was pretty important in making the story great. But the fact that more movies had to be made, we did the best that we could, and in some cases, it was great to do it through flashbacks and all that. But yeah, there's definitely a lot of desire to have not killed him off."

Against a reported production budget of just $13 million, Saw X ended up grossing $110.6 million at the box office, making it a sizable revitalization for Lionsgate.

"We're kind of superstitious," producer Oren Koules told ComicBook.com of potential sequels last year. "We tend not to get too far ahead of ourselves. The movie's going to be released in a few days. For us, we do have ideas for the next one, we haven't put pent to paper. But this is his story, we really wanted it to be John Kramer's story and tell a John Kramer story. So for the first 30 minutes of the movie, he's John Kramer, you don't have any hint of Jigsaw."

Saw XI is hitting theaters September 26, 2025.

Superman Director James Gunn Shoots Down Brightburn Sequel https://comicbook.com/movies/news/superman-director-james-gunn-brightburn-2-sequel-rights/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:30:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo a151f4d9-3968-4835-bded-73f5960bbfcd

A Brightburn sequel is on the backburner. In 2019, Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker James Gunn revealed he was "talking" with Sony's Screen Gems about a followup to the R-rated, Gunn-produced superhero horror movie, about a couple (Elizabeth Banks and David Denman) whose prepubescent adopted alien son (Jackson A. Dunn) becomes a laser-eyed supervillain after manifesting his Superman-like powers. Directed by David Yarovesky and written by Gunn's brother and cousin, Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn, the movie earned $32.9 million at the box office against a reported budget of $12 million, and a mid-credits scene suggested a potential direction for a Brightburn 2.

But five years later, Gunn -- now co-chairman and CEO of DC Studios, who is shepherding the new DC Universe with his upcoming Superman reboot --says the balaclava-clad Brightburn might be up against something even scarier: a rights dispute.

"I mean we talked about it early on," Gunn wrote on Instagram's Threads in response to a fan's inquiry about Brightburn 2. "But the rights are all f--ed up (I only own half) so it's unlikely that it will ever happen."

james-gunn-brightburn-movie.png

Shortly after Brightburn soared into theaters in May 2019, Gunn announced on Instagram he was "tied up for the next few years" with The Suicide Squad for DC and then Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for Marvel Studios, but added "we're talking about the [Brightburn] sequel." Those talks never materialized, and earlier this year, Gunn confirmed on social media there are "no plans at all" for more Brightburn.

Gunn is currently up, up, and away directing DC Studios' Superman, the recently-retitled reboot formerly known as Superman: Legacy. David Corenswet stars as Kal-El -- the last-surviving son of Krypton whose rocket ship crash lands in Smallville, Kansas, and is raised by his adoptive parents as Clark Kent -- and leads a cast that includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Wendell Pierce as The Daily Planet's Perry White, and Mar?a Gabriela de Far?aas the Engineer. The film also features Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Nathan Fillion as the Guy Gardner Green Lantern.

Gunn's Superman is set to open in theaters July 11, 2025.

Evil Final Season Trailer and Poster Released by Paramount+ https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/evil-final-season-4-trailer-poster-tv-series-paramount/ Mon, 08 Apr 2024 17:44:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 59b8effc-a151-422f-8a1c-747ef7e3d9d9

Evil's Final Season now has a new trailer and promo art poster, courtesy of Paramount+. Check out the first trailer for Season 4 below!

Stars Katja Herbers, Mike Colter, and Aasif Mandvi are back as the odd-paired team investigating cases of supposed supernatural phenomenon, with Michael Emerson, Kurt Fuller, Andrea Martin now stacked against with the satanic forces trying to bring about the Antichrist. As always, Evil will be putting its own unique and quirky spin on The Omen framework - as evidenced in the trailer scene where Kristen (Herbers) gets to tell her nemesis Leland (Emerson) that The Omen skipped Damien's infancy because being the parent of an infant is real horror. And Leland may be gloating that he achieved his mission of getting the Antichrist born, but he's also on the hook for raising him.

"We want to thank Paramount+ for giving us four bonus episodes to end Evil in the world in style," Evil co-creators/showrunners/executive producers Robert and Michelle King added in a statement when the cancelation was announced. "We will miss this show and cast. In many ways it was a dream project, but sadly evil will outlast Evil. See you in May."

What Is Evil Season 4 About?

(Photo: Paramount+)

In the upcoming season, Kristen, David and Ben continue to assess cases that involve wayward technology, possessed pigs, demonic oppression and infestation, a dance muse conjured by alleged witches and an evil relic. Throughout, Leland attempts to lure Kristen into raising a baby antichrist who was conceived with her ovum. David is recruited by the Vatican's secret service to "remote view" a paranormal ability to see the unseen in order to detect evil. Ben is hit by an ion beam, causing him to see visions of a taunting jinn until he discovers an unusual solution to banish it. Finally, all three realize they only have a few weeks left to assess cases because the parish has decided to disband the team due to a lack of funds. This culminates in one last confrontation with Leland and the 60 families that make up Evil in the modern world.

Friday the 13th: The Game - Resurrected Gets Killed Following Copyright Infringement Claim https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/friday-the-13th-the-game-resurrected-cancelled-copyright-infringement/ Mon, 08 Apr 2024 13:54:00 +0000 Marc Deschamps b0eadbdd-3b86-413a-9b1b-9648a3c3322c

A fan attempt to bring back Friday the 13th: The Game has officially been cancelled following a cease and desist letter issued by franchise owners Horror, Inc. The project had gotten a lot of attention on social media, with a Twitter account that drew more than 14,000 followers. Friday the 13th: The Game - Resurrection was a mod set to be released on April 15th, and would have featured content from movies that did not feature in the original game, including Jason X and even fan projects. However, the developers have confirmed that Resurrection will not be moving forward.

"It's a shame that someone wants to fight against a fan made project with no profit made. It wasn't our intension to 'hurt the brand' as Horror Inc claims we did," the game's Twitter account reads. "We want to thank this amazing community. We've met a lot of cool people on the path and have had a lot of fun working on the project. We want to let you know that we did fight for you, and we still do, but for now the project is over."

Why was Resurrection Cancelled?

Fan games exist in something of a strange vacuum. Some companies are willing to leave them alone as long as the developer does not seek to make a profit, or damage the reputation of the characters. In the case of Friday the 13th: The Game - Resurrection, the mod was planned to be released for free, but the developers were also planning on giving away the original game, which has been delisted from digital storefronts. Some fans have speculated that, had the developers simply released the mod to existing players that bought the game while it was still available, there might not have been legal issues.

A Second Death for Friday the 13th: The Game

Friday the 13th: The Game was released by Gun Media in 2017. While the game found a passionate fan base, new content ceased in 2018 as a result of a legal dispute over the ownership of the Friday the 13th franchise. Planned content based on Jason X was cancelled, and Gun Media was forced to move on from the franchise. Last year, the publisher released a new asymmetric horror game based on The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Fans have been worried that game will end up suffering a similar fate, but Gun Media continues to assure fans that the franchise does not have the same legal problems as Friday the 13th.

A new game based on Friday the 13th was mentioned by series composer Harry Manfredini in an interview with Rely on Horror last year. However, no details have emerged since, and we don't know how it would avoid the same issues that plagued Friday the 13th: The Game.

Were you looking forward to this mod for Friday the 13th: The Game? Are you frustrated with the legal issues surrounding the horror franchise? Share your thoughts with me directly on Twitter at @Marcdachamp or on Instagram at @Dachampgaming!

MaXXXine Trailer: Ti West, Mia Goth Complete the X Trilogy https://comicbook.com/horror/news/maxxxine-trailer-mia-goth-ti-west-a24-x-pearl/ Mon, 08 Apr 2024 13:00:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely 10a3def1-87aa-4fff-9310-5b4883bf5765

A24 and filmmaker Ti West surprised horror fans in 2022, announcing an already finished sequel to X at the end of the film's credits. Pearl, an origin story also starring Mia Goth, arrived in theaters just months later. West and Goth are now aiming to complete the trilogy with MaXXXine, hitting the big screen later this year. On Monday morning, A24 got the week started in style by unveiling the first official trailer for MaXXXine, sending the story to a new era.

The trailer for MaXXXine has arrived online, bringing Goth's character from X into the 1980s. You can check out the official trailer for Ti West's latest horror movie below!

In MaXXXine, Goth reprises her role as Maxine Minx, an adult film actress that survived the deadly encounter in X. That film was set in the 1970s, and MaXXXine takes things a decade into the future, with Maxine working as a rising star in the adult film industry. Following her big break, a serial killer begins stalking the young starlets of Hollywood, and the terror threatens to unveil information about Maxine's past.

In addition to starring as the titular character, Goth produces MaXXXine alongside West, Jacob Jaffke, Kevin Turen, and Harrison Kreiss. West once again acts as both writer and director.

Goth is joined in the MaXXXine cast by Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kevin Bacon.

For now, MaXXXine is being seen as the potential ending to the story, but West has certainly thought about a fourth film down the line.

"Maybe, I don't know," West told What's Under the Bed? when asked about more films in the X saga. "There is this one weird asterisk idea that, if I explained it, it would make sense, but let's see what happens. Let's get this movie done first, see if people like it, and we'll go from there."

MaXXXine is currently set for a summer release date, with A24 sending the film to theaters on July 5th.

Are you looking forward to seeing what Ti West and Mia Goth have in store for MaXXXine? What did you think of the trailer? Let us know in the comments!

Stranger Things Star Joseph Quinn Teases Eddie's Return in Final Season https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/joseph-quinn-stranger-things-season-5-eddie-munson-return-final-season/ Sun, 07 Apr 2024 20:02:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 011e427c-7ff9-468d-9ba5-dab0d90de651

Like rock 'n roll, Eddie Munson never dies. Season 4 of Stranger Things introduced Joseph Quinn as immediate fan-favorite Eddie "The Freak" Munson, Hawkins High School's Hellfire Club Dungeon Master and metalhead guitarist who took Mike (Finn Wolfhard) and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) under his wing. After he was wrongfully accused of murdering his cheerleader classmate Chrissy Cunningham (Grace Van Dien), Eddie died a hero, helping the party survive a swarm of hellish demobats when he shredded Metallica's "Master of Puppets" in the Upside Down domain of demonic serial killer Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower).

Could Eddie return in the fifth and final season of Stranger Things? Stranger things have happened, but Quinn played coy about the possibility during a recent appearance at FACTS Belgian Comic-Con.

"I do know, but I'm not telling you," Quinn responded to a fan who asked if he was coming back for the next season of Stranger Things. You can watch Quinn's seemingly telling response in the video below.

Quinn, who next appears opposite Paul Mescal in Gladiator II and as the Human Torch in Marvel's The Fantastic Four reboot, hasn't ruled out returning for the final episodes of the Netflix hit that ended its penultimate season with Eddie's death in 2022.

"I think that's such a big part of Eddie's story," Quinn previously told The Hollywood Reporter. "It's a redemption tale. I think he's completely haunted by his inability to do anything to save Chrissy and how powerless he was at that moment. And obviously being blamed for that murder is devastating and then having to go into hiding. I think he gets a little bored with feeling pathetic and unable to do anything. And then at some point in episode 8, a switch flips, and he decides that he's going to prove himself. The opportunity then arises, but he has to pay the ultimate price. But he proves to himself that he certainly isn't a coward."

As for potentially reprising the role that launched him to super-stardom, Quinn said, "You know, anything is possible, and I'd be up for anything. So yeah, we'll see."

Stranger Things season 5 -- starring Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Sadie Sink, Noah Schnapp, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Charlie Heaton, Natalia Dyer, Jamie Campbell Bower, and Linda Hamilton -- is expected to release on Netflix in 2025.

American Horror Story: Delicate Teases Eternal Bonds in "Ave Hestia" Preview https://comicbook.com/horror/news/american-horror-story-delicate-teases-eternal-bonds-in-ave-hestia-preview/ Sat, 06 Apr 2024 22:49:00 +0000 Nicole Drum b6ba06af-3f4e-46e8-ace8-168c4214cad5

American Horror Story: Delicate returned on Wednesday with Part Two of Season 12 returning to FX to continue its eerie tale. The series had been off the air since October, in part due to delays associated with last year's writers and actors strikes. This week's episode saw some major developments for Anna (Emma Roberts) as the truth about what's been going on with her pregnancy -- and who is behind the eerie things happening to her -- is starting to come to light. Now, FX has released a preview or next week's episode, "Ave Hestia" that offers some insight on what happened to her husband Dex's previous wife as well as just how sinister what she's been ensnared in really is.

The official synopsis for "Ave Hestia" is as follows: "Entrenched in her grapple for fame and motherhood, Anna may be involved in a cycle much bigger -- and older -- than she realizes." You can watch the preview for yourself in the video below.

What is American Horror Story: Delicate About?

Based on Danielle Valentine's novel Delicate Condition, in American Horror Story: Delicate, "After multiple failed attempts at IVF, actress Anna Victoria Alcott wants nothing more than to start a family. As the buzz around her recent film grows, she fears that something may be targeting her -- and her pursuit of motherhood." The season stars Emma Roberts, Cara Delevingne, Kim Kardashian, Denis O'Hare, Billie Lourd, Leslie Grossman, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, Julie White, Michaela Jae Rodriguez, Matt Czuchry, Odessa A'zion, and Zachary Quinto.

She continued, "[Alien is] really a movie about pregnancy, but it's been written by a man who doesn't understand that that's what he's writing about ...

Dead by Daylight Has a New OP Killer After Latest Update https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/dead-by-daylight-killers-twins-rework/ Sat, 06 Apr 2024 18:14:00 +0000 Tanner Dedmon e8bcf0ab-c84d-4c22-9958-385b59a0cbb5

The Dead by Daylight meta faces quite the upheaval if what players are facing right now on the test servers ends up making it through to the live game. This week, Behaviour Interactive put out an update for Dead by Daylight on the PTB which finally let players try out the rework for The Twins that's been talked about for while now. While the changes for The Twins were officially billed as just an update for the Killer instead of a full-blown rework, the community views it more as a rework that's made the Killer so strong that even experienced Twins players are questioning whether the changes should go through or not.

The Twins, for context, currently work on live servers by allowing one half of the duo, Victor, to split off from his sister, Charlotte, in order to pursue and pounce on Survivors. Successful pounces can only be done on a healthy Survivor, and once Victor latches on, players regain control of Charlotte and can close the gap on the inhibited Survivor. While unique, that Power has never really allowed them to achieve any meaningful spot in the rankings of Killers since they were first released, but that might change if the new update goes through.

On Dead by Daylight's PTB right now, Victor can no longer pounce on healthy Survivors and can instead jump on those who are already in the dying state. When attached, he makes it so that the Survivors can't return to an injured state. He can only stay attached for 20 seconds, but while he's on, Charlotte gains a movement speed boost so that the can get back to him quicker. To top it all off, Victor can't be kicked away anymore after successful attacks, though he can still be crushed to temporarily disable him.

dead-by-daylight-the-twins-update.jpg

Other changes were made, too, but the new version of Victor is what's causing so much commotion on the PTB right now. Behaviour Interactive asked for players' thoughts on changes overall in the PTB within a post on Twitter and received plenty of comments about The Twins.

"The Victor changes are cool but given that we can't kick him after being injured it allows for easy 'two tap' downs," one Dead by Daylight player said on Twitter. "He needs more of a cooldown when he successfully injures someone or we need to be able to kick him."

Lynxi, a Dead by Daylight player best known for playing The Twins, compared the new version of the Killer to The Nurse, the longstanding queen of Dead by Daylight Killer meta. The Nurse is often considered to be one of, if not the most, difficult Killers in the game, but the assertion now is that The Twins are on par with The Nurse while being easier to play.

"Stronger than Nurse, way too easy," Lynxi said. "Missing is not punishing enough, healing doesn't matter so wasting time/slugging doesn't matter. Very unhealthy for the game. I played for 5 hours and did not lose all 5 gens once. Even without perks/addons, it's actually insane."

The full changes for The Twins and other parts of the update can be found here, though it's unknown how much if at all these changes will be adjusted further before the rework for The Twins goes live at a later date.

The First Omen: Nell Tiger Free and Arkasha Stevenson Break Down Most Shocking Moments https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-first-omen-nell-tiger-free-arkasha-stevenson-break-down-shocking-moments-hand-gore/ Sat, 06 Apr 2024 01:15:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 4f02a371-5bb3-4106-9068-7bb7bde572b9

The First Omen is offiically playing in theaters, and the new horror film takes place before the events of The Omen (1976). The movie was directed by Arkasha Stevenson (Brand New Cherry Flavor) and stars Nell Tiger Free (Servant) as Margaret, a young American woman who is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church. ComicBook.com recently had the chance to chat with both Stevenson and Free, and they both spoke about their love for the original film. We also brought up some of the movie's goriest moments, and they talked about how things went down behind the scenes. Warning: Spoilers Ahead! One of the freakiest moments in the movie is when Margaret watches a woman give birth, and a gruesome hand comes out instead of a baby.

"That was fully practical," Stevenson revealed. "That was a piece by Adrien Morot and Kathy [Tse], and that's Kathy's hand, our makeup effects artist coming out. She has this beautiful, delicate hand to press through, and what I love about their work is how detailed it is. And if you look closely, you can see little bits of cellulite and skin and hair pores. And so you look at the image and a lot of their work, you'd walk on set and you'd be like, 'Oh, that man has no legs. Oh, that's a piece.' You start losing your grip on reality with them."

ComicBook.com recently moderated a Q&A with Stevenson and her co-writer, Tim Smith, and they revealed they encountered some trouble with that scene with it came to the MPAA. They almost got an NC-17 rating, and the scene ultimately had to be cut down from 30 seconds to 13 seconds to three seconds.

As for Free, the lead of the movie enjoyed getting gory for the film, and spoke about having to hold the torso of a severed body.

"So when I'm holding that, the top half of him, that was an interesting moment for sure," Fere shared. "Also, I guess in the finale, in the last kind of moments, I am covered in blood, and I was covered in blood for four days shooting that, cause it took a long time. But also we were on sand and I was lying on sand, so I had sand and blood and mud and just, I was in tatters. I really wasn't. They added sweat to me. So everything sticks to you. And then there's fire. So there's real sweat in the mix. I stunk."

You can wtach our interviews with Stevenson and Free at the top of the page. The First Omen is now playing in theaters.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man Movie Release Window Revealed https://comicbook.com/horror/news/hellboy-crooked-man-movie-release-window/ Fri, 05 Apr 2024 01:46:00 +0000 Spencer Perry 28da4d68-dc1f-47e0-a106-77a61cc2cddd

Updates on the Hellboy: The Crooked Man movie have been scarce, but a release window may have made its way online. Production wrapped on the latest Hellboy reboot almost one year ago, and though distribution rights were picked up the film has not set a firm release date. Buried in a news announcement today on TheWrap, where Hellboy creator Mike Mignola detailed his new comic book universe Bowling With Corpses, was a detail too good to ignore, revealing that Hellboy: The Crooked Man is "set for release this fall." This hasn't been confirmed yet by distributor Ketchup Entertainment, but it's the biggest news about Hellboy: The Crooked Man in months.

Based on the Eisner-Award winning storyline of the same name, Hellboy: The Crooked Man's script was originally written by Mike Mignola along with frequent collaborator Christopher Golden. A previously released, and brief, description for Hellboy: The Crooked Man indicated it was sticking close to the source material, reading: "Stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia, Hellboy and a rookie BPRD agent discover a small community haunted by witches, led by the Crooked Man, a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy's past."

Jack Kesy stars as the titular hero in Hellboy: The Crooked Man, making him the third actor to take on the role in live-action. Yellowstone's Jefferson White and Resident Evil's Adeline Rudolph will also star. Hellboy: The Crooked Man was directed by Brian Taylor, previously part of the "Neveldine/Taylor" directing duo from the 2000s, notable for the two Jason Statham-starring Crank movies and the Gerard Butler-starring Gamer. The pair previously dabbled in comic book adaptations however with Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance while Taylor also collaborated with Grant Morrison on the television adaptation of Happy! for SYFY.

"We went on a long soul-searching expedition to find the right Hellboy, and we knew that this Hellboy was gonna be a very moody, very kind of dark and creepy movie," producer Les Weldon previously told Collider about finding the right actor for the role. "There's no gloss, nothing like that. And Jack, look, I had worked with Jack before, as had other guys in our company, and we sort of came to the same conclusion that that sort of personality he has was gonna work really nicely for that film."

Hellboy: The Crooked Man marks the fourth live-action movie based on Mike Mignola's character and comics. The first Hellboy movie, Guillermo del Toro's 2004 movie, was inspired by the character's first story arc Seed of Destruction, though 2008's Hellboy II: The Golden Army charted its own course and delivered a totally original storyline. 2019's Hellboy reboot starring David Harbour was inspired by the climactic story arc of the Hellboy comics Darkness Calls, The Wild Hunt, The Storm and the Fury, and peppered in bits of Hellboy in Mexico in for good measure.

The First Omen Producer Keith Levine Talks Honoring Original Film https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-first-omen-producer-keith-levine-talks-honoring-original-film/ Fri, 05 Apr 2024 01:08:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak a36d1f7e-facc-4025-8c35-f67efc62f33f

The First Omen opens in theaters tonight, and the film takes place before the events of The Omen, which was released back in 1976. The new film stars Nell Tiger Free (Servant, Game of Thrones) as a young American woman who is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church when she encounters a dark conspiracy. ComicBook.com recently spoke with producer Keith Levine, who opened up about honoring the original film.

"It's making sure that we are honoring that essence, that what made the original great, is not absent from what we're doing," Levine explained. "Whenever we work within a piece of IP or a franchise or something that has a preexisting fan base, for the most part, we always talk about what are the core tenants of what makes this great. Why do people come to this in the first place? And we kind of distill it down and make sure those things are first and foremost present in what we're doing, which sounds like a no-brainer, but sometimes these brands or these projects or these franchises get passed to people who want to do away with that stuff and want to start afresh."

"But I think especially for fans, and especially for Omen fans and for people who've had fandom for 50 years, I think they want to be welcomed in and they want to have people, I think, shepherding the process who kind of feel the same way they do," he added. "And so that's who we are. We have an affinity for it as well. So the same way I think that fans want to see certain ideas, we just make sure we're honoring what made it great to begin with."

You can watch our interview with Levine at the top of the page.

ComicBook.com also spoke with director Arkasha Stevenson and star Nell Tiger Free about their love for the original The Omen.

"Oh, it was totally simple and easy, right? No stress," Stevenson joked about directing her first feature. "No ... I mean, actually I had so much support and it was just a lot of fun. I am a big Omen fan, so this was just kind of a dream come true. And we got to shoot in Rome, so ... you're so distracted by everything and how fun it is to make this film that this stress kind of wears off."

"I think that the reason that the original is so impactful is because of the character development and the really grounded nature of the relationships, but then also how the horror is executed," Stevenson added. "I think that the cinematography is very egoless, which really allows everything to feel real and to lose yourself in it. And so that was something that we really wanted to bring as much as possible to this film. And I think with Margaret's character, Nell did such an incredible job making her real that you want to spend time with her and get to know her so that when her psyche starts to shatter. You're with her."

"Not gonna lie ... A little bit of pressure," Free half-joked when asked about leading a movie in such an iconic franchise. "I love the original. I mean, who doesn't? Especially if you're a horror fan. I mean, it's kind of like a horror fan's bread and butter, in my opinion, is The Omen. So coming into it, I was like, 'I better get this right, or I'm going to be into serious trouble because I am one of them.' I know how intense horror fans can be. We can get really mad if something is not handled correctly. It's like, 'Hang on a second, specifically, this is supposed to be like this actually.' So I was like, 'Okay. I have to really bear all of that in mind and hopefully appease the community.'"

The First Omen lands in theaters on April 5th.

Abigail Is Unleashed in New Trailer for Twisted Vampire Ballerina Flick https://comicbook.com/horror/news/abigail-is-unleashed-in-new-trailer-for-twisted-vampire-ballerina-flick/ Thu, 04 Apr 2024 18:52:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 5ff95ddb-835d-4b5c-88af-45997d372b04

The Radio Silence directing team, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, are reuniting with Scream (2022) and Scream VI star, Melissa Barrera, for a brand new horror film. Abigail lands in theaters this month and follows "a group of would-be criminals who kidnap a 12-year-old ballerina and daughter of a powerful underworld figure. All they have to do to collect a $50 million ransom is watch the girl overnight. In an isolated mansion, the captors start to dwindle, one by one, and they discover, to their mounting horror, that they're locked inside with no normal little girl." Today, Universal Pictures released a new trailer for the highly-anticipated vampire movie.

"From Radio Silence -- the directing team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett behind the terrifying modern horror hits Ready or Not, 2022's Scream, and last year's Scream VI -- comes a brash, blood-thirsty new vision of the vampire flick, written by Stephen Shields (The Hole in the Ground, Zombie Bashers) and Guy Busick (Scream franchise, Ready or Not)," Universal Pictures shared on YouTube. You can check out the new trailer for Abigail below:

Who Stars in Abigail?

In addition to Barrera (Scream franchise, In the Heights), Abigail stars Dan Stevens (Godzilla x Kong: The New EmpireGaslit, Legion), Kathryn Newton (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Lisa Frankenstien), William Catlett (Black Lightning, True Story), Kevin Durand (Resident Evil: Retribution, X-Men Origins: Wolverine), and Angus Cloud (Euphoria, North Hollywood) as the kidnappers and Alisha Weir (Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical, Darklands) as Abigail.

The film is produced by William Sherak (Scream franchise, Ready or Not), Paul Neinstein (Scream franchise; executive producer, The Night Agent), and James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, Scream franchise) for Project X Entertainment, by Tripp Vinson (Ready or Not, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island), and by Radio Silence's Chad Vilella (executive producer Ready or Not and Scream franchise). The executive producers are Ron Lynch and Macdara Kelleher.

Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin Address Melissa Barrera's Scream Firing:

It's a tumultuous time to be a Scream fan as the seventh installment continues to go in a different direction after Melissa Barrera (Sam Carpenter) was fired from the project. Spyglass has gotten a lot of backlash for the decision, which was reportedly due to Barrera's support for the Free Palestine movement. Shortly after Barrera's exit was announced Jenna Ortega (Tara Carpenter) also left the project. Scream 7 continued to go through changes when director Christopher Landon dropped out of the project. Now, the movie is being directed by original Scream writer, Kevin Williamson, and longtime franchise star Neve Cambell is returning after being absent from the sixth installment. Scream (2022) and Scream VI were both directed by Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin who recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about all of the recent drama surrounding the franchise.

"We got exited," Gillett explained, which Bettinelli-Olpin then repeated with a laugh. "We'll be sad that there's not going to be an end to the Sam Carpenter story, but in our minds, we designed Scream VI so that the story feels complete," Bettinelli-Olpin added.

Bettinelli-Olpin revealed that he and Gillett "reached out to Chris [Landon] and just commiserated a little bit." Barrera also addressed Landon's exit from the film, saying, "I actually don't know what happened. He was very excited about it, and he had great ideas for it, so it makes me sad."

Abigail is set to land in theaters on April 19th.

Misc

  • Fixed an issue where players would not disconnect from their party when closing the game.
  • Fixed an issue where players could not block other players.

Known Issues

  • Placeholders are present on the Grisly Bear Skull Mask (including its variant).

Some fans are already taking issue with the proposed changes to adrenaline, while others are frustrated by what's been done to The Twins. While The Twins don't get a lot of play in the game compared to other killers, it would be a shame to see them adjusted in a way that makes them less enjoyable to play, especially after they just came back! Hopefully Behaviour Interactive will listen closely to fan feedback and make adjustments based on the fan community.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre Team Reveals When Virginia is Getting Fixed https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/texas-chain-saw-massacre-virginia-fix-date-ps5-xbox/ Thu, 04 Apr 2024 13:00:00 +0000 Marc Deschamps 0b63c137-8e5d-495e-8257-afe6c131113e

Last week, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre added a new Victim named Virginia. Unfortunately, the rollout wasn't a smooth one, as players quickly noticed issues with her skill tree and skins. Nearly a week after the release, Gun Media has now publicly addressed the issue, but it's going to take a bit before we see a resolution; Texas Chain Saw Massacre's next patch isn't scheduled until April 16th. On the game's subreddit, Gun Media blamed the long wait on the transition between outgoing developer Sumo Nottingham and the incoming Black Tower Studios.

"We apologize for this patch being farther out than anticipated as we are currently in the last stretch of our transition between our development partners, Sumo Nottingham and Black Tower Studios. The hand-over process involves both teams working on bug fixes, investigations, QA testing, cooking a build, uploading said builds and then pushing them through certification, all of which requires more time than one can expect," the post reads.

Fan Frustrations and Questions About the Future

Virginia's issues will not be the only ones fixed that day, though Gun Media has not gone into detail about what else we can expect. On the subreddit, many fans expressed surprise and frustration that these issues will take so long to resolve. At that point, Virginia will have been available for just shy of 3 weeks, and she arrived in the game as paid content. While Virginia remains playable, people spent $10 on DLC that isn't working the way it's supposed to. That's not going to convince anyone that they should be spending more money on in-game content.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, this post has also prompted more questions about the future of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Gun Media has spent the last year assuring fans that the game's situation will not be the same as the publisher's Friday the 13th; the Jason Vorhees video game abruptly stopped getting support as a result of licensing issues. The change between developers has left a lot of fans concerned that Texas Chain Saw Massacre will end up in a similar situation, where updates slowly cease and the game ends up being delisted.

Will Black Tower Studios be Better for the Game?

At this time, we don't know what will happen to Texas Chainsaw Massacre as a result of the development team change. Apparently, that change is still taking place, and Gun Media continues to assert that the switch will result in "more content on an even steadier pace." Hopefully that does prove to be the case, and these issues with Virginia prove to be just a slight bump in the road. For now, fans are just going to have to wait and see how things play out.

Did you buy Virginia in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre? How do you feel about this wait time on a fix? Share your thoughts with me directly on Twitter at @Marcdachamp or on Instagram at @Dachampgaming!

Banned PS2 Game May Be Making a Comeback https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/ps2-playstation-2-sony-game-rule-of-rose/ Thu, 04 Apr 2024 11:29:00 +0000 Tyler Fischer d99f1b0e-f56d-46c9-8ec5-20db40d3f561

A controversial PS2 survival horror game from 2006 may be making its comeback soon. In the year 2006, gamers were treated to a variety of generational classics and great games, such as: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Gears of War, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Bully, Company of Heroes, Okami, Final Fantasy XII, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, Medieval II: Total War, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas, Viva Pinata, Dead Rising, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, Resistance: Fall of Man, Just Cause, Saints Row, Prey, New Super Mario Bros, Need for Speed Carbon, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, and a plethora of great sports games. It was a great year in gaming history.

When you reflect on the year of gaming that was 2006, one game you probably don't think of is Rule of Rose, unless you're a horror fan. The PS2 exclusive from Sony and the now defunct studio Punchline, was released in January of 2006 in Japan before coming west in September of the same year.

Upon release, the game only garnered a 59 on Metacritic. This combined with weak sales to create essentially a flop, which may explain why Punchline closed after it. That said, the game's reputation was greater than this score suggests. Not only was it an exclusive from Sony, but it created a bit of moral panic. Most of this moral panic was in Europe, where it actually got banned from release in some cases. The most prominent example of this was the United Kingdom.

Much of the outcry was based more on rumors and scuttlebutt about the game and its content rather than its actual content, but there is no doubting it also had some dark and violent content that took inspiration from the likes of Silent Hill and and Haunting Ground.

rule-of-rose.jpg

It's been a long time since Rule of Rose has been spoken about, but it has randomly popped back up in 2024. According to a well-known, fairly reliable industry insider, who specializes in reporting on horror games, market research has been done on a potential remaster or port of the game.

This tidbit comes the way specifically of Dusk Golem, who recently tweeted the following: "The company that owns Rule of Rose as an IP a few years ago held a survey asking which titles people would like to see, one of the options there was a Rule of Rose Remaster."

Of course, some market research on the game doesn't mean it is going to return. In fact, Dusk Golem makes no mention of the results. However, what it means is that there are at least rumblings around the game, and where there are rumblings there are possibilities, and where there are possibilities, there are sometimes outcomes. It is hard to imagine there is much demand for the game to return, but this report suggests it is not out of the realm of possibility. That said, remember that this is an unconfirmed report, which means it should be taken with a grain of salt.

American Horror Story: Delicate Episode 6 Recap With Spoilers: "Opening Night" https://comicbook.com/horror/news/american-horror-story-delicate-episode-6-recap-with-spoilers-opening-night-fx/ Thu, 04 Apr 2024 03:03:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 14f21949-a150-4e78-a228-318930530863

American Horror Story: Delicate returned Wednesday night, with Part Two of the FX horror anthology series making its debut several months after things left off on a bit of a cliffhanger for Anna Victoria Alcott (Emma Roberts). Last we saw Anna, her pregnancy has been progressing but things have been getting weirder and weirder with things growing more strange regarding her stalker. There was also the shocking development regarding her rival, Babette who unexpectedly ends up decapitated in a car crash right after the Golden Globes -- and right after Anna says she's willing to do whatever it takes to win an Oscar.

This week's episode, "Opening Night" is set to offer a glimpse into why Anna wants to be a mother so badly as well as pull back the curtain on her husband Dex's (Matt Czuchry) troubling family history. Here's everything that happened in this week's episode.

Spoilers for American Horror Story: Delicate, "Opening Night" beyond this point. Read on only if you want to know.

What Happens in American Horror Story: Delicate Episode 6?

White Plaines, NY 1988. A woman gives birth. Later, as she's singing a lullaby to her child, her partner tells her how f-cked up the song is but also refuses to do anything with the child himself. That night, the woman goes to spend time with him, but he brushes her off. They talk a little about being new parents. She tells him that she thinks she needs to see the doctor because she's having pain in her leg that won't go away, but he dismisses her. Later, she's gasping for air and coughing and has a medical emergency beside him. They go to the hospital but there's nothing that can be done. She's dead. She had a pulmonary embolism. We find out that these are Anna's parents. The baby is Anna. As her father tries to console the infant Anna, a dark-haired nurse comes to the room to help and sings the same lullaby, soothing her immediately. It's Nicolette.

Back in the present, we pick up where "Preech" left of, with Anna getting the news of Babette's death. Siobhan calls to let her know that the death changes the likelihood that Anna will get an Oscar now. Also, Anna is going to be speaking at Babette's funeral. In the limo on the way to the funeral, Siobhan tells Anna she got a SAG award nomination, but Babette did not. Anna gives a moving speech that wins over those in attendance.

Back home, she follows a black cat outside where she fines another mutilated Sunny Day doll and when she picks up the cat, it claws her. Anna takes the doll downstairs to where she's kept the other dolls and the animal corpse she's been keeping. In a bar, Dex meets with his father. His father isn't the best guy and tells Dex that all his mother's crazy is going to "go away". He's also not especially kind about Anna.

Nicolette wakes Anna up to show her another Summer Day doll that showed up on her doorstep. Nicolette asks if someone is trying to give her a message. The cat is also in the house. Nicolette says she's named him Felix and he's come around for years. Anna goes downstairs to look at the dolls she's collected and check where they were all found including the one Nicolette found and sees they make a pentacle.

Anna goes to float in the pool and believes that she sees claws coming through her stomach as well as goats nearby and she freaks out. She runs to Dex but instead of telling him about it, she apologizes to him for acting crazy. He apologizes for treating her badly and they try to relax together. Nicolette watches. When Dex walks away, Anna opens her robe and the wounds on her stomach are real. Later, getting ready for Dex's art opening, she asks Kamal why Talia doesn't have security cameras in the basement but he doesn't know why. Elsewhere, the director of The Auteur symbolically burns the script and says he's going to the press with their secrets because he needs to do the right thing. Siobhan says no one does the right thing in Hollywood.

Anna goes to the opening and asks Talia about the basement cameras, but she says they need to leave some room for reality. Talia reminds her that she's not Adeline, Dex's first wife. As Talia denies various things, Anna tells her that she knows she's lying. Anna goes to the bathroom where she's confronted with the woman who died at the Gotham Awards again. However, the woman isn't dead. Anna manages to get out of the bathroom where she runs into Ivy, who denies being the nurse. Anna freaks out on her but tries to cover it.

Sonja greets Anna and notices the scratch, the blemish, and Anna's red palms. She pulls her aside and kisses Anna's hands and cheeks, her wounds mysteriously going away. Sonja tells her that she has a surprise for her. It's a painting that she wants to give to her and when Anna looks at it, she hears baby cries. When Dex gives his speech thanking Anna, though, she hears the woman from the bathroom clapping and soon finds herself surrounded by Ivy, Sonja, Talia, and Nicolette, the painting having taken on a sinister look. Sonja kisses Anna but then Siobhan shows up to get her out of there.

Anna tells her that she thinks she needs to quit Hollywood and Siobhan slaps her and reminds her that the world -- men -- want women to give themselves up to be mothers so they disappear. As they're talking, news breaks that the director has died in an apparent suicide. While Siobhan steps away, Anna calls the number on the card she was given and hears it ringing in the restaurant. It's Preecher who says not to speak there.

Dex goes to confront his mom for not coming to his opening and blood drips onto his phone. He races into the house to find his mother dead in her bathtub in another apparent suicide but there's a message on the mirror: "I tried to warn you."

The First Omen Director Addresses Possible Sequel https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-first-omen-arkasha-stevenson-addresses-possible-sequel/ Thu, 04 Apr 2024 00:17:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 4c3e7837-dc2c-4783-9438-0d579cf9e128

The First Omen is being released in theaters this week, and the new movie is a prequel set directly before the events of The Omen, which was released back in 1976. While the movie leads right into the original, that doesn't mean there isn't room for another sequel, especially considering the film has gotten early praise from critics. ComicBook.com recently had the chance to chat with The First Omen director, Arkasha Stevenson, and she spoke about some of her hopes for the future. During the chat, we asked Stevenson if she'd be open to making a sequel to The First Omen, and she gave a promising response.

"Oh, well, what is really fun is - as an Omen fan - there's the big question of where Damien came from and this film answers that, but then all these other questions pop up, and I feel like for me, I could keep going back in time and learning how the conspiracy started, where the jackal came from. It's fun to think in both temporal directions," Stevenson shared.

During the interview, Stevenson also talked more about her love for the original film.

You can watch our interview with Stevenson at the top of the page.

The First Omen lands in theaters on April 5th.

The First Omen Star Nell Tiger Free Compares Margaret To Other Horror Heroines https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-first-omen-nell-tiger-free-compares-margaret-to-other-horror-heroines-final-girls/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 23:18:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak f4c188a1-1f67-4e52-b3e0-1c8833de54a0

The First Omen is being released in theaters on Friday, and the film stars Servant's Nell Tiger Free as Margaret, a young American woman who is sent to Italy to begin a life of service to the church. However, things take a dark turn when she starts to uncover an evil conspiracy that will lead to the events of the original The Omen (1976). ComicBook.com recently had the chance to chat with Free about the film, and she spoke about her love for the original and addressed Margaret's place in the long history of horror heroines and final girls.

"I don't know if she does," Free replied when asked how Margaret stands out from other women in horror. "I think she happily joins her sisters in the world of horror. I think that we're all doing it together, and she's just another girl who had a series of very unfortunate events happen to her and she prevails against ... I think that she just hopefully joins the ranks of these wonderful leading ladies in horror."

The First Omen Director and Producer Priase Nell Tiger Free:

ComicBook.com recently spoke with The First Omen producer Keith Levine and director Arkasha Stevenson, and they both had nothing but praise for Free and her performance.

"100%. Yeah," Levine shared when asked if he was involved with Free's casting. "She's incredible onscreen and offscreen, just like the best possible human being, incredible to work with. Obviously, she carries the movie on her shoulders, and yeah, we couldn't have found a better person, I think, to play Margaret."

"She felt like she had a little bit of genre cred, but also wasn't like, ... 'Oh, I know her, and I like her. I've seen Servant,' but they haven't really seen her flex muscles beyond that," he continued. "And I think what's so cool about our movie is she gets to do everything. She starts off and she's sort of this quiet young woman arriving in Rome, and when you find her at the end, she's been through some sh*t and she's a little badass, but also experienced a lot of dark stuff."

"So it is a certain, I think, skillset that is able to handle material like that. And Nell took it and just exceeded everybody's expectations, but we all believed in her so much to begin with, so we couldn't be happier with her," Levine added. "I mean, again, if you had to give the award out for 'Most Outstanding' ... it was her and she's on set every day. She's basically in every scene of the movie."

"No, it was a dream," Stevenson said of directing Free. "And I joke with her that she makes directors lazy, just so good, and has such great instincts ... It was so nice to have a partner on this film. And she does a lot of heavy - this is a big boulder for her to carry. She's in every scene just about, she's on set every single day."

"It's extremely physical as well as mentally taxing. And she was able to do those peaks and valleys so seamlessly and effortlessly that she was able to be present as a collaborator, which was wonderful," she added.

The First Omen lands exclusively in theaters on April 5th.

Cuckoo: Watch the Freaky Trailer for the Hunter Schafer-Starring Horror Movie https://comicbook.com/horror/news/cuckoo-full-trailer-hunter-schafer-dan-stevens/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 22:36:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 4352d51f-7e14-40ac-a194-bddac0f0c399 Horror fans who have been checking out the Sydney Sweeney-starring Immaculate since its release last month were treated to the trailer for the disturbing new movie Cuckoo, with Neon today releasing that trailer online. Much like its first teaser trailer, the film looks at least somewhat familiar to longtime horror fans while also offering a glimpse of something much more ambitious, bizarre, and unsettling. Given that, in addition to Immaculate, Neon has offered up experiences like Infinity Pool and Titane, all of which have pushed boundaries in provocative and unexpected ways, their upcoming release will likely follow a similar brand of terror. You can check out the full trailer for Cuckoo below before it lands in theaters on August 9th.

Cuckoo is described by Neon, "Reluctantly, 17-year-old Gretchen (Hunter Schafer) leaves her American home to live with her father, who has just moved into a resort in the German Alps with his new family. Arriving at their future residence, they are greeted by Mr. K?nig, her father's boss, who takes an inexplicable interest in Gretchen's mute half-sister Alma. Something doesn't seem right in this tranquil vacation paradise. Gretchen is plagued by strange noises and bloody visions until she discovers a shocking secret that also concerns her own family."

Also starring in the film are Dan Stevens (The Guest), Jessica Henwick (Underwater), Marton Cs?k?s (Freelance), Greta Fern?ndez (Santo), and Jan Bluthardt (Luz).

Neon added of the upcoming project, "Following his festival sensation Luz, German director Tilman Singer has once again succeeded in creating an atmospheric and visually outstanding horror trip with an original plot and perfidious twists."

Cuckoo has already screened at a handful of film festivals and sits at 76% positive reviews based on 25 reviews, according to aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. Over at Bloody Disgusting, Meagan Navarro writes, "[Writer/Director Tilman Singer] boldly marches to the beat of his own drum, examining heady themes of grief, reproduction, and gendered expectations through inventive, playful horror. That Cuckoo plays it fast and loose with details and plotting means that this body horror entry will likely polarize, but lovers of weird cinema will find a lot of charm in Singer's latest."

Cuckoo is currently set to land in theaters on August 9th.

The X-Files: Gillian Anderson Addresses Scully Return for Ryan Coogler's Reboot https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-x-files-reboot-gillian-anderson-dana-scully-ryan-coogler-response-reaction/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 21:20:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 1ddf44cd-8da4-436f-a81b-65ca5be6b28e

Ever since The X-Files seemingly concluded with Season 11 back in 2018, star Gillian Anderson has explained why she had no interest in reprising her role as Dana Scully in any revival of the project, but now that director Ryan Coogler is in the process of developing a new take on the material, Anderson admits that she would be open to getting involved in some capacity. The major impetus for her to return would be to work with Coogler, and while she didn't offer an enthusiastic reaction to the possibility of joining a new X-Files, she at least seems to be humoring the idea.

"It's so funny because, for most of my life, since I finished The X-Files, every interview I do, people have asked, and the answer has always been, 'Nope. Not gonna happen,'" Anderson admitted to the TODAY show. "Now, Ryan Coogler, who's the director of Black Panther, a brilliant, brilliant director, has approached Chris Carter to say that he wants to do a take on it. I cannot think of a better way around for a reboot to happen, I think he's a bit of a genius."

When pressed on whether this means she's open to returning, Anderson confessed, "There's a chance it will happen. Whether I am involved in it is a whole other thing, but in his hands ... But I am not saying no, because I think he's really cool, and I think if he did it, it will be done incredibly well, and maybe I'll pop in for a little somethin' somethin'."

Interestingly, this lines up with one of the last times she talked about the series, as she shared in 2022 that, were she to come back to the series, it would likely only be under new creative leadership.

"It just feels like such an old idea. I've done it, I did it for so many years, and it also ended on such an unfortunate note," Anderson shared with Variety previously. "In order to even begin to have that conversation [about another season] there would need to be a whole new set of writers and the baton would need to be handed on for it to feel like it was new and progressive. So yeah, it's very much in the past."

While the upcoming project is being billed as a reboot, no details about the direction Coogler will take the material have been revealed. If Anderson is willing to make a brief appearance in the project, it's possible the new series could be set in the world of the original series and explore the exploits of all-new agents.

Stay tuned for updates on the future of The X-Files.

Untitled Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler Project Adds Delroy Lindo https://comicbook.com/horror/news/untitled-michael-b-jordan-ryan-coogler-vampire-supernatural-project-adds-delroy-lindo-blade/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 19:55:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 87da3752-e4ed-4f65-93b5-07cfd5170848

While Marvel fans are still waiting on updates about the MCU's Blade, another supernatural thriller has caught people's attention. It was previously announced that Creed and Black Panther director Ryan Coogler would be reteaming up with Michael B. Jordan for an untitled vampire film at Warner Bros. It was confirmed last month that the movie would be heading into theaters in 2025. The Hollywood Reporter announced today that Delroy Lindo has joined the cast of the film. This is especially interesting considering Lindo was cast in Blade way back in 2021.

According to the report, not much is known about the film, including Lindo's role. THR also revealed there are whispers of Lindo's role having a "musical element."

Who Is Sill Involved With Blade?

Currently, Blade is scheduled to be released on November 7th, 2025. The "Untitled Ryan Coogler Event Film" is scheduled to be released in theaters on March 7, 2025.

The First Omen and Hellraiser Producer Teases The Blob Remake (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-first-omen-and-hellraiser-producer-teases-the-blob-remake-exclusive/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 19:03:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak bfc4b388-9a66-4e2c-aa59-58fa90d68281

The First Omen is heading into theaters this week, and the film takes place before the events of The Omen (1976). In honor of the movie's release, ComicBook.com had the chance to chat with producer Keith Levine. In addition to chatting about the new prequel, Levine also offered some updates about other upcoming projects from Phantom Four, the production company founded by David S. Goyer. Levine shared some news about the Hellraiser franchise and also revealed details about the previously announced remake of The Blob.

"Well, I personally am very excited about - because another one of these 'my parents are out movies' that I'm watching at a young age is The Blob - which we're doing at Warner Brothers, also with [Hellraiser director] David Bruckner ... The Chuck Russell movie just, as a kid, it f*cked me up big time," Levine shared.

"There's this movie theater scene towards the end of it where these kids sneak out and they go to the movies and then they get killed by the blob ... I think that was the first time I had seen kids my age die. I was watching all these horror movies. It was always about teenagers and older people, and I think I was like, 'It never felt like me,' but that movie, just because of that scene, really, really, really terrorized me. So very excited to dive into that world and honor the practical effects, the tactile feel of it. We're just excited about all the possibilities there."

You can watch our interview with Levine at the top of the page.

What Is The Blob About?

In both the original 1958 movie and the 1988 remake, The Blob followed an alien goo arriving from outer space that consumes everything in its path. The more it consumed, the larger it grew.

"The Internet is eating our entertainment world in so many different ways, so having a vision of something that's come before us, a piece of IP that people recognize is more and more becoming the norm for movies. It's always been the case. It's just getting harder and harder and harder to get original content made," Bruckner shared with ComicBook.com in 2022 about balancing original stories vs. revivals. "I will always try to push my own projects and there is a lot of great work out there that I'm lucky to come across that I feel like should be movies and I would love to work on, but also I'm sure, I hope, there will be other conversations of existing properties, so we'll see. But also for me, I have to be able to share a vision with the fans and with the studio, whoever's presenting it for how this can succeed, and it has to be personal to me on some level."

The First Omen lands exclusively in theaters on April 5th.

Bambi: The Reckoning Trailer Expands the Poohniverse https://comicbook.com/movies/news/bambi-the-reckoning-trailer-expands-the-poohniverse/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 17:21:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 1f055c87-8327-47ec-8c08-b5d33f6d588b

Jagged Edge Productions has released the first teaser trailer for Bambi: The Reckoning, an upcoming horror movie based on Bambi: A Life in the Woods, the public-domain children's novel that inspired the beloved Disney animated classic. Directed by Dan Allen and written by Rhys Warrington, Bambi: The Reckoning follows Xana (Roxanne McKee) and her son Benji (Tom Mulheron) who find themselves in a car wreck and soon hunted down by the vicious killing machine, Bambi.

As you can imagine from a horror-comedy take on Bambi, the massive deer monster is out there taking out humanity as retribution for the murder of his mother by a hunter...so it only stands to reason the trailer starts with a hunter. Coloquially known as "The Poohniverse," because it started with Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, the public domain horror universe is officially branded as the Twisted Childhood Universe.

You can see the trailer below.

The "deer" in the movie certainly has a moose vibe, but we suppose it would be hard to have an actual deer look too intimidating. At least it should turn out better for Bambi than his crossover with Godzilla.

"It will be complete carnage. We are heavily influenced by Freddy Vs Jason and The Avengers," explained Jagged Edge Productions Rhys Frake-Waterfield, who directed the two Winnie the Pooh movies. "We would love to see a horror movie where the villains group together and are going after their survivors. We have some incredible set pieces in mind and some sequences I think will truly shock people. The movies we are working on now as stand-alones are all building towards Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble."

Scott Chambers, Producer of Jagged Edge Production, added, "Similar to The Avengers we will follow Pooh, Tigger, Rabbit, Owl, Piglet, Pinocchio, Sleeping Beauty, Bambi, The Mad Hatter, Peter Pan and Tinkerbell joining forces to wreak havoc. We are working with a larger scale budget on this one and are excited for what the future will hold. When you see the stand alone movies you will see the easter eggs hinting toward the crossover. Some of the villains also will not see eye to eye which will allow for some carnage within the group in some epic sequence of monster vs monster."

The second Blood and Honey movie was in theaters last month, and is set to hit digital soon. Other Poohniverse films coming up include Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare and Pinocchio.
