Superman and The Witcher star Henry Cavill is about to become a dad. On Monday night, at the red carpet premiere for his upcoming movie The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, Cavill revealed in an exclusive interview with Access Hollywood that he and his girlfriend, Natalie Viscuso, are expecting their first child together. While no other details have been revealed at this time, Cavill has expressed how much he is looking forward to this new milestone. Cavill and Viscuso, who is the former Vice President of Television and Digital Studios for Legendary Entertainment, were first rumored to be dating back in 2021. In late 2022, they were confirmed to be collaborating together on the upcoming Warhammer 40K cinematic universe.

"I'm very excited about it," Cavill said of the pregnancy. "Natalie and I are both very excited about it. I'm sure you'll see much more of that."

Will Henry Cavill Return as Superman?

For years, speculation swirled as to whether or not Cavill would reprise his role as Clark Kent / Superman on the big screen, with him most recently stepping into the role in the post-credits scene of 2022's Black Adam. Since then, as James Gunn and Peter Safran have stepped in to "reset" DC Studios, it has been confirmed that Cavill will not be playing Superman going forward. David Corenswet has now been cast in the role, and will debut in Gunn's Superman movie in 2025.

"I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it's sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman," Cavill wrote at the time. "After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn't the easiest, but that's life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes. For those who have been by my side through the years....we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember... Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It's been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards."

What Is The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare About?

Based upon recently declassified files of the British War Department and inspired by true events, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is an action-comedy that tells the story of the first-ever special forces organization formed during WWII by UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill and a small group of military officials including author Ian Fleming. The top-secret combat unit, composed of a motley crew of rogues and mavericks, goes on a daring mission against the Nazis using entirely unconventional and utterly "ungentlemanly" fighting techniques. Ultimately their audacious approach changed the course of the war and laid the foundation for the British SAS and modern Black Ops warfare.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is directed by Guy Ritchie, and also stars Eiza Gonzalez, Alan Ritchson, Henry Golding, Alex Pettyfer, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Babs Olusanmokun, and Cary Elwes.

DC Reportedly Developing an "Ultimate"-Style Line With Scott Snyder https://comicbook.com/comics/news/dc-reportedly-developing-an-ultimate-style-line-with-scott-snyder/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 17:14:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame a134852c-dfc7-4b12-b13b-a0aaea1c5743

DC is reportedly eyeing a new universe -- one that would be "showrun" by beloved writer Scott Snyder and will exist in parallel to the current DC Universe. Existing in the same vein as Marvel's Ultimate universe, the project will reportedly be called Absolute (or Absolute DC). Obviously, DC have attempted variations on the "Ultimate" theme over the years, most notably their All-Star and Earth-One lines of miniseries and original graphic novels. Per reporting at Bleeding Cool, the biggest difference between those imprints and the Absolute line is that DC will attempt to remake their whole universe, not entirely unlike what they did in 2011 with The New 52.

The New 52, which was a true reboot of DC's publishing line, including renumbering all of their comics with new #1 issues, was a massive sales success in its early days, but lagged as it wore on -- in part because there were major creative defections and stories of editorial meddling almost from the beginning. The All-Star line, while it only managed to publish a tiny number of actual comics, gave big-name creators broad leeway to tell the stories they wanted with DC's biggest characters.

The idea, then, seems to be that a companion line like Marvel's (recently resurrected) Ultimate universe could be a success if the creators involved are allowed freedom to work their magic.

Bleeding Cool further claims that the Absolute universe will be part of an editorial program called DC All-In, which will attempt to take a more holistic approach to overhauling the publishing line, while leaving alone the pieces that seem to be working.

There are no official details yet. It seems likely that this will spin out of the events of DC's Free Comic Book Day one-shot, Absolute Power, and the event series that spins out of it from Mark Waid and Mikel Janin. Bleeding Cool speculates the Absolute and All-In initiatives may be announced at Comic Con International in San Diego this summer, although that seems to be little more than an educated guess. The timing makes sense, given that the Absolute Power event is likely to wrap in October or November, meaning that anything announced at Comic Con and solicited soon thereafter would line up almost perfectly with the end of that story. Waid previously had a multiverse-altering event in the form of The Kingdom, which established the quasi-multiverse concept of Hypertime, but that idea never really took off.

Superman's James Gunn Fuels New Rumors About Fan-Favorite Villain https://comicbook.com/dc/news/superman-james-gunn-fuels-new-rumors-fan-favorite-villain-mister-mxyzptlk/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 18:03:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak f13643b2-8177-464a-aee8-15d8551d44fa

James Gunn's Superman is scheduled to hit theaters next year, and the director recently teased a lot of excitement at CinemaCon. Gunn has announced much of the cast, including David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The director is also known for sharing teases on social media, and his latest post has people talking. Gunn shared a classic-looking figure of Mister Mxyzptlk, a fan-favorite DC villain who was created back in 1944.

"Say my name," Gunn captioned the post. You can check it out below:

Who Is Mister Mxyzptlk?

Mister Mxyzptlk has the power to warp reality to his will, which he often uses to harass and annoy Superman. In the majority of his appearances, he can only be banished back to the Fifth Dimension after he is tricked into saying or spelling his name backward. Mister Mxyzptlk was previously seen in the Arrowverse.

While Gunn's post isn't an official announcement about the character, it does have fans excited. Many commented on the post to share their thoughts on a potential Mister Mxyzptlk appearance.

"I would literally see Superman 20 times in theaters if he's introduced in the DCU," one fan wrote. "I have a strong feeling that the new movie is going to do his character justice," another wrote. "I'd like to see him get his proper due in live action," someone else added.

What Is The New Superman About?

Originally titled Superman: Legacy, DC Studios describes Superman as the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

In addition to the previously mentioned stars, Superman: Legacy will star Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Mar?a Gabriela de Far?a as Angela Spica/The Engineer, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho, and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher.

"It's not an origin story," Peter Safran previously explained to reporters when asked about the film. "It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice, and the American way. He has kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned."

Are you hoping Mister Mxyzptlk will be in Superman? Who would you like to see play him? Tell us in the comments!

Gunn previously confirmed Superman would be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.

Godzilla Comic Welcomes New Ghidorah-Level Titan to MonsterVerse https://comicbook.com/anime/news/godzilla-justice-league-big-one-titan/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 15:56:00 +0000 Megan Peters ddd78bd0-acca-4444-93fa-6658733a30ea

Over the decades, Godzilla has faced his fair share of monsters. From Gigan to Ghidorah, the list goes on and on. These days, Godzilla is facing down foes with Kong at his side, and the DC Universe is getting in on that action. Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong is thriving, and its latest teaser introduces a new alpha-level threat.

The whole thing comes from the MonsterVerse as the franchise welcomed a new titan to the DC Comics run. The beast is simply named Big One, and it is being touted as dangerous as Mecha Ghidorah. There are few titans in history more dangerous than Big One, and it will take the Justice League working with Godzilla to defeat the threat.

godzilla.jpg
(Photo: DC Comics)

If you want to know what Big One is all about, well - the titan is said to have been created using the Lazarus Pit. The combination titan is absolutely massive, and it borrows monster DNA from the creatures Kong faced on Skull Island. The nasty lizards have been given a major upgrade with Big One, and there is no way Kong would be able to face down this foe solo.

Luckily, Kong has allies on hand to help him. You can imagine he won't be too happy about the return of his nemesis, but Big One is bigger than Skull Island. The titan has the potential to take on the world if the Justice League cannot stop him. It seems the Lazarus Pit has made another monstrosity, and the MonsterVerse has grown bigger as such.

If you are not caught up on Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong, you can find the DC Comics crossover easily enough. With six issues to date, the Toho collaboration can be found in local comic stores. As for the MonsterVerse, the franchise is thriving in the wake of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The movie has grossed nearly $400 million globally, and it has put the franchise in good shape to continue.

What do you think about this MonsterVerse update...? Let us know what you think in the comments below as well as on Twitter and Instagram. You can also hit me up @MeganPetersCB to share your take!

Action Comics' Joshua Williamson Teases Epic House of Brainiac Moments for Supergirl, Lex, and More https://comicbook.com/comics/news/action-comics-joshua-williamson-teases-epic-house-of-brainiac-moments-for-supergirl-lex-and-more/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 01:52:00 +0000 Matthew Aguilar f42d4273-7915-4f52-89f4-e97f21c8789e

The House of Brainiac is officially underway with Action Comics #1064, though the seeds of the storyline were planted all the way back in Superman #1. While the issue begins with a much-needed day off for Lois Lane, things quickly descend into chaos when Brainiac's army of Czarnian army attacks Metropolis, and the Superman family will feel the impact of that attack for some time. Speaking of the Superman family, they are set to have a major role to play in this story, and ComicBook.com had the chance to speak with Action Comics and Superman writer Joshua Williamson about their roles in the story and which members of the family might be getting some standout shine throughout the story.

"I think everybody's going to get a moment, particularly the characters that are in space. Lois is still going to be in Metropolis, and then she's dealing with some of the stuff, the aftermath of what's happening there. And we have a lot of really cool stuff with Lois coming throughout the summer that tees up here a little bit. We're definitely doing more with Lois, and I think we've been doing more with Lois this whole time," Williamson said.

(Photo: DC)

"The character that surprised me, actually, was Supergirl, because Supergirl, I knew she was going to play an important role. So was Superboy. I always knew Conner would play an important role, but Supergirl, I really like writing her, and she kind of took over a couple scenes," Williamson said. "Because when you're with a character, you have to sometimes stop yourself and think, 'Not what I would do. What would that character do? What would Supergirl, what would Kara do in this moment?' And I found that Kara is also angry and she is experienced in seeing what Brainiac is capable of, and she's not afraid of him anymore, but she has enough knowledge to be like, 'I know what I have to do in these moments.' And so Kara does some really bold stuff."

ac1064-preview4.jpg
(Photo: DC)

"There's a moment, I think it's in the fourth issue, she does something kind of crazy. I'm not sure I'd call it crazy. She makes a decision to do something that might be a little nutty, and then she's just like, 'No, I'm going forward. We're doing this.' And that came from just writing her. I'm not even sure if it was even ... What she does wasn't even the original plan. It was just like, 'Oh, no, she would do this and this is actually a really cool thing. She should totally do that.' Yeah. So she took over in a couple places that I was surprised by while I was writing it," Williamson said.

The Luthors aren't being left out of the fun either though, with both Lena and Lex having major roles to play throughout the story. "And then Con has a big moment, and then Lena has a couple big pieces just based on even her history with Brainiac, and then Lex does something... It's funny. When I started writing Superman, I had certain rules for myself where I was going to try not to go backwards too much. I have a habit, you can see with some of my work, I go backwards. I look at stuff in the past and bring it forward sometimes," Williamson said. "With Superman, I was like, 'No, we want to try to focus a little bit more on the new.' This story is the only one that I feel like we went back a little bit because we were referencing a lot of older Brainiac stories and some of this stuff with Lena, but it was the same idea."

"It was like, take those things and then take the next step with them. Don't live there. Take the next step, and then Lex has some really big moments in here, and the reason I bring that up is because Lex has something that definitely references a story from the past in a major way that some people are going to be like, 'Holy s***' when it happens. And I think we answer the question, is Lex lying or not? Is he really trying to do the right thing or not? And we do answer that here. You get to see it," Williamson said.

Williamson is going above and beyond to make sure everyone gets their time to shine, and for fellow fans of the work he's done with villains like Livewire and Parasite, you need not worry, as they'll get their limelight as well. "So Lex has a really big moment. I mean, this story's been crazy, because I have whiteboards all over my office and one of the whiteboards is just a list of every character in it just to make sure I don't forget somebody, just make sure everybody always has a moment," Williamson said. "Livewire and Parasite have a cool scene in here. Yeah, there's a lot that happens in this story. It's a lot of characters in this one."

Action Comics #1064 is in comic stores now, while Superman #13 continues the House of Brainiac when it hits comic stores next Tuesday, April 16th.

Peacemaker Season 2 FINALLY Begins Filming With John Cena and James Gunn's First BTS Image https://comicbook.com/dc/news/peacemaker-season-2-first-behind-the-scenes-image/ Sat, 13 Apr 2024 18:31:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 2c002fb1-b2f3-44c3-8b15-90c72ff0eae3

John Cena is wasting little time following his WrestleMania appearance to step back into the shoes of DC's Peacemaker, as director James Gunn has revealed the first "behind the scenes" shot from season two. While Gunn won't be handling all the directing duties for the upcoming season, the head of DC's new cinematic universe will still have a big part to play in the anti-hero's big comeback. Considering how popular Peacemaker has become, this is sure to make waves in the comic book world.

This new iteration of Peacemaker first appeared in James Gunn's "The Suicide Squad", with John Cena showing just how dangerous this DC comic character could be in a life-or-death scenario. Unfortunately for Cena's character, he didn't make many friends once he betrayed the likes of Bloodsport and the other members of the Squad. In Peacemaker's first season, we saw the titular character taking on an alien invasion while making some new friends along the way. In recent headlines, it's been revealed that the next season won't exactly be in the same universe, as it is making the transition from the "Snyder-Verse" into the new phase of the DC Cinematic Universe under Gunn, "Gods And Monsters".

Peacemaker Season 2 Has Started Filming

James Gunn is no stranger to dropping some big reveals on social media, and it seems that he won't be breaking the trend as head of DC's new cinematic universe. The legendary director took an image of himself reflected in Peacemaker's now legendary helmet, showing that Cena wasted little time in jumping to set from the squared circle at the WWE's latest major event.

On social media, Gunn recently clarified how Peacemaker's second season will be making some changes from the character's initial outing, "Nothing is canon until Creature Commandos [in 2024] -- a sort of aperitif to the DCU -- and then a deeper dive into the universe with Superman: Legacy after that. It's a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think it's okay to be confused on what's happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet."

What are your predictions for Peacemaker's big comeback? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and the DC Cinematic Universe.

DC Reveals a Major Detail About Its Multiverse https://comicbook.com/comics/news/dc-multiverse-infinite-earths-outsiders-6/ Sat, 13 Apr 2024 04:05:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson f8a385ec-31fa-4e86-83a1-6c991279e811

The multiverse has been an interesting cornerstone of the DC universe, with a number of emotional and high-octane crossover events being born out of the concept. As the multiverse has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times over, the outlook on it has shifted -- and a recent issue of DC's comics may have expanded that outlook even further. Spoilers for Outsiders #6 from Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, Robert Carey, Valentina Taddeo, and Tom Napolitano below! Only look if you want to know!

The issue finally begins to shed light on Lucius Fox's mission for the Outsiders, which is connected to mapping all of conceivable reality. Eventually, thanks to intel gathered by Drummer, The Carrier is able to generate Lucius' map, which just-so-happens to resemble a snowflake. When Lucius remarks about the "infinite number of multiverses" that their reality could contain, Drummer corrects him, suggesting that the answer is closer to 196,833. While this is only a passing detail, before the team is thrown into The Place Between the Pages and meets various characters from cancelled or retconned DC books, it does add a new level to how we can view the DC multiverse.

What Is DC's Outsiders About?

In Outsiders, following the fallout of DC's Gotham War event, Kate Kane's Batwoman and Luke Fox will become disillusioned with the idea of established superheroing methods. This will lead them on an exciting new journey, not of superheroism, but of archaeology, as this team-of-two delve deep into the history (and, in fact, many histories) of the DC Universe.

"What we saw with Luke and Kate was they are two characters who are ready to step outside of that framework," Kelly explained in a previous interview with ScreenRant. "They've seen coming out of Gotham War, coming out of the shadow of the Bat in a very real way. They're over it. They've seen the superheroes and how the superhero system functions: you put them in jail, they get back out... it's just a giant circle. So how do we break that and the same way we break any criminal cycle is with empathy. Is with understanding the victims who are then, in turn, the perpetrators. How do we break that cycle? And that is what the Outsiders are really going to be about."

What Is the Next Big DC Event?

Absolute Power shows how Amanda Waller will use the strategic and military might of Failsafe and the otherworldly technology of the Brainiac Queen to steal all metahuman abilities from every super hero and super-villain around the globe, a threat so dire it will take the combined efforts of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and the Super Heroes of the DC Universe to defeat it.

Absolute Power will kick off with DC's Free Comic Book Day book, which will be available in participating comic shops on Saturday, May 4th. 2024 Absolute Power Free Comic Book Day Special Edition will be a 32-page comic featuring an original 12-page story by Waid with art by Mikel Jan?n, as well as a preview of Absolute Power's first issue. It will be followed by Absolute Power: Ground Zero, an official prelude that will debut in June and bridge the shocking conclusion of the Superman story "House of Brainiac" with Amanda Waller's machinations.

Outsiders #6 is now available wherever comics are sold.

Civil War Review

Here's what host Kofi Outlaw said in his Civil War (2024) review:

With Civil War Garland takes on his most ambitious story yet, writing and directing a vision of what it would look like if America's Culture War explodes into an all-out Civil War - and not in some distant dystopian future, but right here, and right now.

By the end of the film, that sentiment persists, as we're left to wonder if a nation so violently divided could ever be healed again - even with significant symbolic action or "victory," on one side. More terrifying yet is the notion that all this horror and carnage is bubbling just below the surface of our current society, waiting to make this film all too real.

Civil War will not be an easy film to engage with, but it is an important one to consider.

Fallout TV Series Review

(Photo: Prime Video)

Here's what ComicBook gaming editor Tanner Dedmon said in his Fallout TV series review:

Even where the Fallout show slips on occasion with an unneeded kiss or a questionable encounter, time and time again, I kept marveling at how authentic the world felt. The original story told in Fallout is paramount to this trait since it lets us focus on the characters, world, and narrative rather than getting hung up on shot-for-shot remakes of key moments. Fallout is technically canon, according to Bethesda's Todd Howard, so it'll be under the microscope for nitpicking and "well actually" moments, but even when the show takes leaps to expand on the world, it always feels deserved.

DC Just Brought Back Some Surprising Characters https://comicbook.com/comics/news/dc-outsiders-6-characters-zauriel-carson-gotham-city-garage-jakita-wagner/ Fri, 12 Apr 2024 05:01:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 648981e5-4e16-488c-bade-db2ac658ac4b

DC has been publishing comics for nearly a century, with a number of characters becoming a part of the franchise's massive tale. While many of those heroes and villains have faded into obscurity, a handful of long-forgotten characters from across DC's history just acquired a new lease on life -- with a catch. Spoilers for Outsiders #6 from Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, Robert Carey, Valentina Taddeo, and Tom Napolitano below! Only look if you want to know!

The issue sees the Outsiders, along with their benefactor, Lucius Fox, accidentally traveling to "The Place Between the Pages," a void that exists inside of a "narrative singularity." As the team roams around, understandably confused by The Place Between the Pages, which presents itself as a 1950s suburb, they run into a number of faces that DC fans will recognize. Golden Age Superman is working as the suburb's milkman, Zauriel serves as the bartender, the heroines of Gotham City Garage have reassembled, and Cave Carson and Richard Dragon are both around. To an extent, these characters are aware of the fate they were initially dealt by DC's canon, with Carson joking that the Outsiders must either be there because of a Crisis event or some sort of editorial meddling. This trip gets more complicated when they return back to the main reality, and Drummer finally comes clean about her identity. She's really Jakita Wagner, who took on the mantle of The Drummer for unknown reasons.

outsiders-6-drummer-jakita-wagner.png

Who Is DC's Jakita Wagner?

Created by Warren Ellis and John Cassaday in 1998's Planetary #1, Jakita is a savvy warrior with superhuman abilities, as the daughter of Century Baby Lord Blackstock. As a member of the Planetary, Jakita went on an array of adventures, and developed an on-again, off-again relationship with fellow team member Elijah Snow.

When Jakita unveils her true identity to the team, she also procures the Planetary Guide, teasing even more connections to Wildstorm's existing canon.

Joker 2 Trailer Teases Inspiration From a Cult-Classic Movie Musical https://comicbook.com/movies/news/joker-2-trailer-musical-umbrellas-of-cherbourg/ Fri, 12 Apr 2024 02:18:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson ac4f01d5-429b-48db-a18c-269b5f0ccfc2

The first trailer for Joker: Folie ? Deux arrived this week, and it definitely shook up people's expectations of the DC mythos. The sequel follow in the footsteps of 2019's Joker, which grossed over $1 billion at the global box office and won multiple Academy Awards. This time around, Folie ? Deux is presenting its twisted story as a musical -- and the first footage shown in its trailer makes a handful of references to a critically-acclaimed movie musical.

One of the first sequences in the Folie ? Deux trailer shows Arthur Fleck / Joker (Joaquin Phoenix) being escorted through the gates of Arkham Asylum on a rainy day, as the umbrellas being held around him are shown to be brightly colored. This, combined with a very mod-looking outfit that Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga) is shown wearing while playing the piano, seem to suggest that Folie ? Deux is drawing inspiration from 1964's The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.

(Photo: 20th Century Fox)

How Does The Umbrellas of Cherbourg Tie to Joker 2?

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is a 1964 musical rom-com, which serves as the second portion of an unofficial "romantic trilogy" for director Jacques Demy alongside 1961's Lola and 1967's The Young Girls of Rochefort. The film centers around the years-spanning romance between two young adults in France, Genevi?ve ?mery (Catherine Deneuve) and Guy Foucher (Nino Castelnuovo), as war, marriage, pregnancy, and the passage of time strain their connection. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is distinct in the movie musical landscape for being entirely sung-through like an opera, as opposed to having non-diagetic musical numbers.

So, how does this connect to Joker: Folie ? Deux? For starters, director Todd Phillips introduced the film's trailer by arguing that it isn't a full-fledged musical, saying "it's a movie where music is an essential element" not unlike the first Joker, which utilized multiple needle drops to convey Arthur's inner thoughts or delusions. This outlook could certainly lend itself to an approach like The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, where the musical numbers become a way to express Arthur and Harley's emotions instead of straightforward dialogue. If Joker: Folie ? Deux is utilizing The Umbrellas of Cherbourg as a reference, it also provides a distinct movie musical touchstone outside of the big band musicals of the 1930s and 1940s. Plus, the sweet-but-tragic throughline of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg could mirror Folie ? Deux -- at least, the events that Arthur and Harley believe to be happening.

What Is Joker 2 About?

Joker: Folie ? Deux will be a musical that follows the twisted romance between Arthur Fleck / Joker and Harley Quinn, with a lot of the film taking place within Arkham Asylum. Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker: Folie ? Deux will also feature appearances from Zazie Beetz, Brendon Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Jacob Lofland.

What do you think of the first trailer for Joker: Folie ? Deux? Are you excited for the upcoming DC film? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!

Joker: Folie ? Deux will be released exclusively in theaters on Friday, October 4th.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Update Adds Performance Improvements, Steam Deck Fixes, and More https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/suicide-squad-kill-the-justice-league-performance-improvements-steam-deck-patch-notes/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 16:59:00 +0000 Marc Deschamps 8827f3bf-3a17-4b4b-94f2-8c65d5be04aa

A new update for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League should now be live in all versions. Unlike the game's recent Joker update, this one does not add anything in terms of new content, instead focusing on a whole bunch of changes and bug fixes. The list is pretty significant, offering fixes for things like crashes, Steam Deck issues, and a whole lot more. Apparently, some players will even notice some performance improvements in certain missions, though Rocksteady does not offer any specifics. Full patch notes from the game's official website can be found below:

CHANGES IN THIS RELEASE

  • Battle Pass XP has been increased for most mission types as well as Cargonauts.
    • Patrols, Strongholds, Incursions and Smash & Grab missions now reward 100 Battle Pass XP (Up from 50).
    • Mayhem missions now reward 200 Battle Pass XP (Up From 100).
    • Killing Time remains unchanged, as this is based on the Mastery Level you complete it at.
    • Cargonauts now reward 100 Battle Pass XP (Up from 50).
  • The drop rate of Master Notorious and Master Infamy gear has been increased.
  • Damage reduction from Nightmare stacks gained from the Tier 3 Scarecrow Infamy Set bonus has been increased to 20% (Up from 10%)
  • Burn and Poison have both had their damage over time increased at higher mastery levels.
  • We've made some changes to Support Squad Branch Missions to make engaging with their respectful mechanics more impactful and to make them a little easier to complete.
    • Toyman Missions - Critical hits now do 300% increased damage and enemy health regen has been reduced to 5% per non-critical hit.
    • Penguin Missions - The Terminaut buff now grants 300% increased damage against all enemies.
    • Ivy Missions - Players now deal 300% increased damage to Afflicted enemies.
    • Rick Flag Missions - Players now deal 300% increased Grenade damage to all enemies.
    • Lex Missions - Counters are now a 1-hit kill on Grunt enemies and deplete an entire health bar on Brute enemies.
  • The 'Pain Suppression' Mutator has had its damage reduction reduced from 95% down to 50%.
  • The 'Craze Immunity' Mutator has been toned down and renamed to 'Craze Tolerance'. The following now applies for this Mutator:
    • Enemies are no longer immune to Venom Frenzy
    • Crazed enemies take 50% less damage
  • The 'All New Me' Mutator no longer applies to vehicular enemies.
  • Nth Metal rewards from Mastery Level Incursions have been capped at 400% (Mastery Level 70+)
  • We've made changes to the Bug Outpost Stronghold that's closest to the Hall of Justice in Episode 1 to make it a little more challenging. To do that, we've swapped out an Energy Crystal and Generator Crystal and replaced them with 2 Super Generator Crystals, so you're going to want to consider the order in which you destroy the Crystals, and be quick about it.
  • We have added options to more easily navigate Episode Rank Rewards while using a controller. You can now scroll by page, rather than only per item.
  • Terminaut Bit requirements during the 'High Roller' and 'Shooting Gallery' Incursions have been reduced when playing in multiplayer, as we felt that these were slightly too high.
  • Added "Joker" as a filter option in the Store.

BUG FIXES

  • During Maintenance we implemented a temporary fix for users experiencing their Raising Hell progress being stuck at Tier 1. We will be releasing a more permanent fix for this at a later date.
  • Made improvements to performance degradation that can occur in multiplayer sessions, resulting in gameplay oddities such as unresponsive enemies, rubber-banding, delayed actions and objectives not spawning.
  • Fixed a performance issue in Killing Time that was sometimes resulting in odd behaviour such as enemies being unresponsive and delays in player actions.
  • Fixed a bug that would sometimes cause players to load into a black screen with audio when entering a session.
  • Fixed a bug that could sometimes cause characters to appear invisible. This could also lead to other issues such as loading into a Black Screen.
  • Fixed a bug that resulted in an Easy Anti-Cheat Error when launching the game on Steam Deck, preventing players from accessing the game.
  • Fixed a bug that causes The Joker's 'Fortissississmo' Talent stack infinitely, resulting in massive grenade damage over huge distances. Sorry, only Waller is authorised to call in nukes.

  • Fixed a bug that was sometimes causing enemies in the 'Acid Flower Power' Incursion to spawn too far away from Ivy's plants, yet still be counted as affecting the objective.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the "Dynamic Tutorials" toggle to be the opposite of what it should be. Off is now actually Off!
  • Fixed a bug that prevented players from receiving Episode 1 Rank progress and rewards if they were invited to an Episode 1 multiplayer session without having selected Episode 1 prior to receiving the invite.
  • Fixed Leaderboards for Killing Time (Hardcore) not working correctly.
  • Fixed the 'All New Me' Mutator being removed when an enemy becomes Shield Harvestable.
  • Fixed the 'Laugh Riot' Incursion not counting towards Lex's 'Learning: Incursions' Contract
  • Fixed a bug that would sometimes prevent players from performing any action after using Deadshot's Suicide Strike.
  • Additional fixes for Deluxe Edition content not being granted to players.

  • Fixed a bug in 'Killing Time' that sometimes caused Tanks to fall off the bridge.

  • Various crash fixes.
  • Various performance improvements in certain missions.
  • Various VFX fixes to minimise Photosensitive Epilepsy risks.
  • Various localization fixes.
  • Various UI fixes.

Hopefully these fixes and changes will lead to a better experience for players. Reception towards Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has been pretty mixed since launch, but the game does have some passionate fans. Naturally, Rocksteady's Twitter post about the update has prompted many of those players to note issues that have yet to be resolved. Those fixes will have to wait for the time being, but it's possible we could see more in advance of the game's next season and second DLC character.

How do you feel about these changes to Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League? Are there any changes or bug fixes you're hoping to see? Share your thoughts with me directly on Twitter at @Marcdachamp or on Instagram at @Dachampgaming!

Zack Snyder Details Scrapped Plans for Wonder Woman 1854 https://comicbook.com/movies/news/zack-snyder-details-scrapped-plans-for-wonder-woman-1854/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 11:04:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 7bda4efb-2b27-4e6a-8017-551fa9b19dc2

An early, Elseworlds-inspired idea for Zack Snyder's DC Extended Universe would have seen Wonder Woman head to the Crimean War. The story, which apparently bounced Warner Bros. as "Wonder Woman 1854," was a riff on the plot to Wonder Woman, in which Diana left the island to pursue Ares earlier. And, according to Snyder, the story still would have led to Steve Trevor, with his multiversal destiny tied to Diana's. That might seem a little odd to casual fans, but to anyone who's ever read Elseworlds stories where Batman or Superman gets transposted into the Civil War or the far future, you know carrying the supporting cast along is pretty standard.

Snyder says the Wonder Woman 1854 idea never got as far as being an actual script. Still, it seems like they had a lot of ideas, and that it was bouncing around for long enough that there were plenty of details still on Snyder's mind.

"The idea of that was an early riff we were doing: once Wonder Woman left the island in search of Ares, what happened to her in her different incarnations?" Snyder told Empire. "My idea for it was that she would travel around the world looking for Ares and she would go to every place where there was conflict."

Snyder had shared a photo to social media back in 2021, which mirrored the World War I photo seen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice but featured a different cast of characters, and Diana carrying the severed heads of enemies. You can see that below.

wonder-woman-1854.jpg

"On those battlefields she found these lovers, warriors, and they would age out because she is immortal," Snyder told Empire, in the new issue of the magazine out now. "They would be her lover for ten years or they might die in battle, and it was probably sad for a lot of the guys because they would see her starting to be nice to the next young soldier and be like, 'Oh, I'm being replaced.' But all the guys that she had with her were those loyal warriors she found on the battlefields all over the world."

That, Snyder explained, is where Trevor would come into the story, with Snyder noting that when they discussed the story, Trevor would have ended up in Crimea.

It's easy to see how this version of Diana -- more violent and without a permanent romantic attachment -- could have been a controversial take on the character, but it's also illustrative of how much flexibility the filmmakers had given her immortality and her centuries-long story.

Superman's Wendell Pierce Breaks Silence on Playing Perry White https://comicbook.com/movies/news/superman-wendell-pierce-breaks-silence-perry-white-dcu/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 02:11:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 3d7c8478-906d-4548-9646-35e028e52e2f

Superman is currently in production, bringing to life James Gunn's massive vision for the iconic DC hero. A number of actors are confirmed to be part of Superman's ensemble, including The Wire and Jack Ryan alum Wendell Pierce, who has been cast as Perry White. During a recent appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers, Pierce spoke about the role, and revealed his previous experience with Perry's lore in the comics.

"I'm looking forward to this," Pierce revealed. "I never grew up reading comics, so I relied on my friends to tell me about it. I'm excited about this, you know."

Who Is Perry White?

Originally created for The Adventures of Superman radio serials, Perry White made his comic debut in 1940's Superman #7. He is regularly portrayed as the editor-in-chief at The Daily Planet, becoming a boss and ally to Clark, Lois, and Jimmy Olsen. Over the years, Perry has remained a stable part of Superman's supporting cast, and has learned and unlearned Clark's secret identity multiple times over. He has become iconic for his dislike of being called "Chief", as well as his catchphrase "Great Caesar's ghost!"

Pierce's portrayal is just the latest example of Perry White appearing onscreen, including Jackie Cooper in Superman: The Movie, Laurence Fishburne in the DC Extended Universe, Lane Smith on Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Michael McKean on Smallville, Paul Jarrett on Superman & Lois, and Darrell Brown on My Adventures with Superman.

What Is Superman About?

Per DC Studios, Superman tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and a better tomorrow, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

"We got James Gunn and Peter (Safran) working very hard on DC, which is going to be a very big growth driver for this company," Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav explained last year. "We are very bullish on DC. The Superman script first draft is done. Gunn is on a mission from god. It is a really good moment to prove out on DC what we got and how strong it is globally for long-term sustainable growth."

Who Will Star in Superman?

Superman will also star David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Mar?a Gabriela de Far?a as Angela Spica / The Engineer, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho.

"We've been having a lot of great conversations, David and I, with James Gunn, the director," Brosnahan revealed in a recent interview. "We've been talking a lot about where this project fits into the canon of the Supermans that we know. So hopefully, this'll be... we'll be putting our own stamp on things."

Trina Robbins, Legendary Cartoonist and Wonder Woman Artist, Passes Away at 85 https://comicbook.com/comics/news/trina-robbins-legendary-cartoonist-wonder-woman-artist-passes-away-85/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 23:45:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 92bf9b4b-3c01-467b-8873-8ad047781f59

Trina Robbins, the cartoonist and artist known for her decades-long career in the underground comix movement, has passed away at the age of 85. The news was broken on Wednesday night, with comic writer Gail Simone paying tribute to Robbins in a Facebook post. Beginning in the 1970s, Robbins became one of the most instrumental female voices in underground comix, contributing to or editing a number of anthologies or papers. She was also a prolific advocate for chronicling the history of women in comics and cartooning, publishing over half a dozen books on the subject.

"My hero, friend and mentor, Trina Robbins, has passed, Simone's post reads in part. "Not only was she a legendary creator of comics, she was also one of comics' greatest historians and researchers, and a guiding light to countless girls and women who had a hard time believing there was space for them in this art form. She proved there was and fought endlessly to remind people of the legacies of the incredible female creators that were often overlooked and undervalued over the decades. She was one of the first creators to speak to me about comics before I ever even considered writing a script and she treated my goofy questions with far more kindness and scholarship than they likely deserved."

Born Trina Perlson on August 17, 1938 in Brooklyn, New York, Robbins' comics career began in the underground papers East Village Other and Gothic Blimp Works. In 1970, she and Barbara "Willy" Mendes produced the first-ever comic book created entirely by women, the one-shot It Ain't Me, Babe Comix. For two decades, she was subsequently involved with the anthology Wimmen's Comix.

She also worked as contributor and editor on Choices: A Pro-Choice Benefit Comic Anthology for the National Organization for Women, and created the series GoGirl!, which was published at both Image comics and Dark Horse Comics.

In addition to her unground work, Robbins designed the original costume for Warren Publishing's heroine Vampirella, and was the first-ever woman artist to draw DC's Wonder Woman. Robbins illustrated the character on the 1986 four-issue miniseries The Legend of Wonder Woman, and wrote the 1998 one-shot Wonder Woman: The Once and Future Story. She even cameoed in 1989's Wonder Woman Annual #2. She also created the Millie the Model spinoff Misty for Marvel's Star Comics.

Robbins' advocacy work included co-founding Friends of Lulu, a non-profit designed to educate and encourage women in the comic book industry. She also worked on multiple non-fiction books chronicling the history of women cartoonists or comic creators -- Women and the Comics, A Century of Women Cartoonists, The Great Women Superheroes, From Girls to Grrrlz; A History of Women's Comics from Teens to Zines, The Great Women Cartoonists, and Pretty in Ink. Her most recent book was 2023's Gladys Parker: A Life in Comics, A Passion for Fashion.

Outside of her work in comics, Robbins operated a clothing store in the 1960s. She developed a close friendship with various members of the 1960s music scene, even being referenced in Joni Mitchell's iconic song "Ladies of the Canyon."

Our thoughts are with Robbins' family, friends, and fans at this time.

Viral Batman Beyond Short Proves We Need a Movie ASAP https://comicbook.com/anime/news/batman-beyond-viral-short-movie-watch/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 15:10:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 07752333-61ca-488e-9444-b83383ace23d

Terry McGinnis found himself eternally in the shadow of Bruce Wayne, and while he might never overtake the original Dark Knight, Batman Beyond remains a part of the DC Universe to this day. Set to make a comeback in the upcoming animated film, Crisis on Infinite Earths Part 2, dropping this month, Terry is about to be in the limelight once again. In a new viral video, Batman Beyond is once again in the public zeitgeist as fans are clamoring for the return of the Gotham of the future.

Earlier this year, a production designer and producer on Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, Yuhki Demers, teamed up with writer/director Patrick Harpin to pitch an animated Batman Beyond movie to Warner Bros Discovery. Unfortunately, the pitch seemingly was passed by the studio, but Demers was more than happy to share the new take on future Gotham. Here's what the producer had to say about the pitch to bring back Terry McGinnis, "Before we pitched, they warned us 'there is absolutely no way we can do a Beyond movie,' but they loved our enthusiasm. We pitched the outline for the entire film, and what started as a 'never' turned into a 'maybe'. In the time since, we've been pitching our way up the company hoping to get to James Gunn."

Terry McGinnis Needs a Comeback

Following the reveal of the Batman Beyond pitch, one fan animator took the opportunity to create a viral video that imagined what the original artwork might have looked like in motion. Despite the fact that it has been over two decades since Terry's original series ended, McGinnis has continued to find ways to return in various other projects, animated or otherwise.

While a "Batman Beyond" was featured in promotional material for the next chapter of the DC animated universe, it wasn't confirmed if it would be Terry McGinnis. In the past, we've seen iterations of the Dark Knight from the future that have been Tim Drake donning a similar costume. Crisis On Infinite Earths Part 2 is sure to reveal this Batman's identity when the movie arrives on April 23rd.

Do you want to see Terry McGinnis make a comeback in the future from the future? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and the world of the Dark Knight.

Comic Book Reviews for This Week: 4/10/2024 https://comicbook.com/comics/news/new-comic-reviews-dc-marvel-image-april-10-2024/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 15:00:00 +0000 Chase Magnett 9187c433-3cae-4351-afc2-a57668f61a4f

Welcome to this week in comic book reviews! The staff have come together to read and review nearly everything that released today. It isn't totally comprehensive, but it includes just about everything from DC and Marvel with the important books from the likes of Image, Boom, IDW, Dark Horse, Dynamite, and more.

The review blurbs you'll find contained herein are typically supplemented in part by longform individual reviews for significant issues. This week that includes Green Lantern #10, The Incredible Hulk #11, and Deadweights #1.

Also, in case you were curious, our ratings are simple: we give a whole or half number out of five; that's it! If you'd like to check out our previous reviews, they are all available here.

DC #1

ACTION COMICS #1064

Action Comics #1064 is a huge improvement, story-wise, from the last arc with the arrival of Braniac's Lobo army descending on Metropolis and it's clear that this issue is meant to set up a major story that's intended to feel like classic Superman comics in a big way. The issue has a ton of action and plenty of stakes. That said, at times it feels like it's overstuffed and almost too much. It's an oversized issue, but it might have been better served by keeping things a little tighter and a little smaller to drive home the emotional punch of it all, especially with the repetitive nature of putting Superman's loved ones in the crosshairs. -- Nicole Drum

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

BATMAN AND ROBIN #8

Batman & Robin #8 feels a little bit like a low compared to where this series has been over the past couple of issues. Robin's outing with Flatline falls a little short as it turns out to be a highly orchestrated scheme to protect her sister - and in turn feels like a bit of a side tangent just to keep Robin away from Batman and have a handy reason for Flatline to be around. Meanwhile, Batman's team-up with Shush doesn't really feel like a team-up and turns into being something of an ambush, but the way its executed feels rushed and messy and lacks focus. Between the two separate stories, the issue has a disjointed feel to it that functionally nudges the story along but doesn't really feel like it delivers anything al that interesting. I hate the term filler, but it might just fit here. -- Nicole Drum

Rating: 2.5 out of 5

BATMAN AND ROBIN AND HOWARD #2

It's kind of adorable to see how uncomfortable Batman is while parenting Damian. The feud between Damian and Howard continues, and it's all so petty that all you can do is laugh and shake your head. The comic perfectly captures what it's like for kids in school, with cliques and the urge to always fight for dominance. I'm more curious to see if Batman's investigation does lead to actual criminals like Joker, or just some innocent school hijinks. -- Tim Adams

Rating: 3 out of 5

BATMAN/DYLAN DOG #2

Batman/Dylan Dog #2 takes full advantage of the combined settings to introduce a wide-array of DC Comics characters to Dylan Dogs (and one or two more of Dylan's compatriots to Batman). Even as Batman takes the lead in the issue's first half--utilizing his advanced gadgets, scientific ability, and wealth to resolve cliffhangers from issue #1--Dylan steals the issue as their combined focus turns to the supernatural. Batman disappears for the second half of the issue to be replaced by two iconic figures of DC supernatural lore, both of whom make a big impression. Whether the issue is delivering some snide dialogue between Dylan and a fellow Londoner or exploring the realm of Hell, there's an undeniable charm. Every new setting, whether understated and slobbish or filled with fire and brimstone, is striking, especially the latter. Abstract depictions of various levels from Dante's masterpiece alongside nefarious demons make for instantly imposing splash pages and many more memorable sequences. It's the exploration of Batman and Dylan Dog's combined worlds that drives the sophomore installment of Batman/Dylan Dog; given what's displayed here, readers will be left wishing this series was an ongoing feature. -- Chase Magnett

Rating: 4 out of 5

THE BAT-MAN: FIRST KNIGHT #2

The Bat-Man: First Knight continues its Golden Age-inspired noir run, with Batman escaping from a near-execution at Blackgate Prison. The comic portrays Batman as only a step above an amateur, barely winning fights and needing help from the likes of Gordon or others several times during the comic. Given the timeframe of the comic (this is set around the time of his earliest appearances), it makes sense, but it's a good reminder of how much Batman has changed over the decades. My biggest issue with the comic is that the series is really struggling to balance some of its competing threads of intrigue. Because everything is so different, it's hard to tell what is just flavor to showcase how different the setting is and what's supposed to be relevant to the plot. That won't be a problem in the eventual collection, but it's not always engaging in monthly reading. -- Christian Hoffer

Rating: 3 out of 5

GREEN LANTERN #10

Hal Jordan has had quite the journey thus far, but Green Lantern #10 shifts from his own personal evolution to the macro-level problems facing the entire Green Lantern Corps. That shift doesn't work without everything writer Jeremy Adams has built across the first nine issues of Green Lantern, however, and the investment pays off in a significant fashion now that Hal is mixing it up with the other Lanterns. The talented artistic team of Xerm?nico, Amancay Nahuelpan, and colorist Rumulo Fajardo Jr. are up to the task of expansion as well, delivering several stunning sequences that superhero and sci-fi lovers will adore, and it all results in a can't-miss issue for Green Lantern fans. -- Matthew Aguilar

DC #2

(Photo: DC)

OUTSIDERS #6

This just might be Outsiders' most ambitious issue yet, blending a high-concept take on the DC multiverse and canon with some satisfying character reveals. Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing's script never buckles under that pressure, instead delivering a meaningful and fun take on the limbo of comic book publication. Robert Carey's art renders that expansive scale perfectly, both where character designs (or redesigns) are concerned, and background Easter eggs that demand your attention. Once again, Outsiders is a moody and thoughtful delight. -- Jenna Anderson

Rating: 4.5 out of 5

RED HOOD: THE HILL #3

Red Hood: The Hill #3 continues the series' trend of having the character who is theoretically supposed to be the main character or at least a central character, Red Hood, be mostly a side player. It also continues the feeling that the story is treading water. We have the Big Bad still frustrated with the Good Guys and their efforts, the Good Guys looking to have someone else take on their work for now with the reminder that Batman or the rest of the Bat Fam seem to generally only care about certain parts of Gotham. The only thing that is really of interest here is that there's a major attack that leaves the fates of most of the characters a major question mark at the end of the issue but then much of that interest is wasted when Batman shows up. At this point, as a reader I'm still not entirely certain what's going on here other than to drive home the point that there are pockets of Gotham that the heroes don't touch and that's a problem but that alone doesn't feel like enough to build a story on. -- Nicole Drum

Rating: 2.5 out of 5

SINISTER SONS #3

Tomasi and Georgiev give readers, in my opinion, the best issue of the series focusing on the sons of General Zod and Sinestro to date with this one. Thanks to the inclusion of "Major Tom," Sinson and Lor Zod are given quite a lot to work with here, as their adventures ramp up from issues one and two. Tomasi is clearly having a lot of fun with these dark reflections of Damian Wayne and Jonathan Kent and that fun is infectious. The cliffhanger alone easily sells the price of admission for the upcoming fourth issue and I'm looking forward to seeing what other tricks the new super villain-centric series has in store. -- Evan Valentine

Rating: 4 out of 5

SPEED FORCE #6

Speed Force's final chapter perfectly encapsulates much of the series' unabashed, even if misguided, youthful exhuberance. Jarrett Williams' script does have some flashes of charm and character, but it gets a little too bogged down by awkward jokes and a scattered presentation of the plot. Aesthetically, Tom Derenick and George Kambadais' work is also a little disjointed, and seems unsure of whether it wants to be incredibly lively, or clunky. While I still admire the concept of Speed Force, I am ultimately a little underwhelmed by its execution. -- Jenna Anderson

SUICIDE SQUAD: DREAM TEAM #2

The initial mission of Suicide Squad: Dream Team is resolved in short order as it establishes the foundation for this miniseries' story. Although there's plenty of confusion in tying up the loose ends from Dream Team #1, once Waller arrives on the scene the new status quo is presented clearly enough. The narrative is split between Waller's ambitions alongside the team she uses to obtain them and a more heroic journey presented by Dreamer following her exit from Gamorra. While the ugliness displayed in a US-led coup over a sovereign state provides few redeeming elements on the page, the staging presented between Waller and Dreamer near the issue's end is far more intriguing. Not only does it present Dreamer as a desperate hero grappling with her complex situation, but it provides a sympathetic lens for Waller - a useful contrast to the pure villainy the character has been disposed to recently. None of that is to say Waller's actions are justifiable (they are not), but her perspective is made to be understandable and that adds a useful layer to the building conflict between herself and Dreamer. It seems the heart of this story still lies ahead of it. -- Chase Magnett

ALIENS: WHAT IF...? #2

Aliens: What If...? walks an impressive line in humanizing Carter Burke, a character depicted as being entirely reprehensible in the original Aliens film. Some of that is due to the premise of the story, this being an alternate reality where he survived Aliens and became Weyland-Yutani's scapegoat for everything that went wrong with the colony on LV-426, and some it is also letting us see him struggle with his broken family life. All of this makes him, if not sympathetic, pitiable without absolving him of the guilt for his actions in Aliens. Much of it also needs to be credited to the issue's dialog, which is surprisingly funny in a way that feels true to the character. He's sardonic in a way that speaks to his desperation, something that borders on gallows humor. This whole exercise could have been a by-the-numbers extrapolation of what happens when a writer chooses option A over option B or when a character outlives their relevance. Instead, the tale is adding more depth to the character without fundamentally undercutting the thematic underpinnings that defined him in the first place. -- Jamie Lovett

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #47

Ben Reilly's return as Chasm--the great underappreciated antagonist of this Amazing Spider-Man run accompanied by the always-great Hallows' Eve--bookends this issue as it introduces and updates a wide array of plot hooks in the best soap operatic fashion of Amazing Spider-Man. Ranging from adorable new exploits in Peter's dating history (that some fans are just determined to hate) to updates with long-simmering villains, it provides a chaotic portrait of Peter's life. That blend of encounters and supporting characters, new and old, also paints Peter with the earnestness, good will, and drive that makes him so admirable. Guest artist Todd Nauck proves an excellent fit to this volume with detailed characters capable of delivering horror and humor within a single page turn. The only thing better than the chaos found throughout The Amazing Spider-Man is the storylines bound to unfold from these introductions as things get very hectic by the final page. -- Chase Magnett

CARNAGE #6

After crossing over with Venom for a couple of issues, Carnage returns to the main plot that it had left by the wayside. Returning to the previous material resets the pace of the narrative as it spreads itself thin, checking in with Flash Thompson revisiting his war trauma while trapped in the Darkforce Dimension, Carnage continuing his internal debate over the pros and cons of godhood, and digging deeper into the life of an internet video commentator whose become obsessed with Carnage's latest murder spree. It feels like a lot of re-stacking is happening and not much else since the characters mostly remain where they begin until the very end, where we get a tease of what's to come next time. It feels like there are ideas buried here, but the lack of mood and motion makes it hard to invest in whatever the narrative is trying to say. -- Jamie Lovett

EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #3

Count me a fan of the new Star-Spider, and of the creative team of Justina Ireland and Pete Woods. I've always enjoyed Woods' unique art style, and Ireland uses the Spider-Man mythos to craft a pulse-pounding tale. And Persephone (Percy) Parker is the best name ever! The return of Web-Weaver is always welcomed, but the story focuses more on the personal relationship between roommates Cooper Coen and Peter Parker, which isn't a bad thing. -- Tim Adams

FANTASTIC FOUR #19

Fantastic Four #19 absolutely delivers on the promise of Alex Ross's noir cover art. It opens on Alicia Masters in black-and-white with rare splashes of color and delivers on narration that sets the mood perfectly. Both the mystery presented in those opening pages and the underlying mystery of how this story came to be provide satisfying answers within a single issue; both halves of that plot deliver upon the characters of the central cast while continuing Alicia's spotlight in the current volume. While Jesus Aburtov's color design may pay homage to Frank Miller, he and artist Carlos G?mez deliver a noir panoply that is effective and entirely their own. The character designs of the Fantastic Four and many of their familiar cast are excellent and make this one spin on reality readers may wish had lingered a little longer. -- Chase Magnett

It wouldn't be a killer comic without a good hook, and The Incredible Hulk #11 ends with a great one. THE INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #17

The unstoppable force of Tony Stark's power and drive is on full display in The Invincible Iron Man #17. The story of this individual title takes a hard turn due to the wider Fall of X storyline, but that's alright because it still fits perfect in the scope of the scripts Duggan has written for the better part of two years. Patch Zircher joins the series as guest artist, the perfect match for the darker themes introduced in issue #17 that will likely carry through to the end of the series. -- Adam Barnhardt

MS. MARVEL: MUTANT MENACE #2

Iman Vellani and Sabir Pirzada are clearly in love with the Marvel Universe and that admiration for the comic book locale shines through in Mutant Menace. It's also clear that the writers are having an absolute ball with Kamala as she finds herself struggling with being the latest member of the Mojoverse. There are some issues with the art here as it can often feel like a good deal of detail is lost in the sea of hilarious antics. Mutant Menace is a fun romp despite the troubles and tragedies facing Marvel's mutants and I look forward to see where Ms. Marvel goes next in this series. -- Evan Valentine

RESURRECTION OF MAGNETO #4

Magneto narrates his return to the living world and an opening foray against Orchis in Resurrection of Magneto #4. The only interesting conflict is the internal choice presented to Magneto in choosing an identity for himself. Outside of that there is a battle against the Stark Sentinels which have proven to be inconsistently implemented plot devices across the X-line and an unconvincing threat against three of the most powerful figures in Marvel's pantheon. That mecha battle which concludes in an absurd round of fisticuffs is portrayed clearly without many panels of note. It's the moral battle portrayed by Magneto that is much more satisfying with an excellent gore effect in the issue's most impactful panel. Yet the internal monologue arrives at an answer and status that handwaves the sprawling range of Magneto's past identities looking toward a future in which the only certainty is inconsistency. As satisfying as it is to have the Master of Magnetism returned, he currently lacks for a satisfying narrative to occupy. -- Chase Magnett

STAR WARS: DARTH VADER #45

It's no easy to task to add nuance and character to a villain that has long since been dead, while also placing shackles on a creative team that they can only work with said character during a specific time in his life. Luckily, Marvel found the right creators for the job as Greg Pak, Adam Gorham, and Paul Fry are able to weave an interesting look at Vader while planting some interesting seeds for the future. One way to explore a character is by studying them through the eyes of those in their employ, and it's a great way to start off Darth Vader's forty-fifth issue here. Pak has always been a major boon to Marvel Comics and I look forward to see what he has in store for this galaxy far, far away. -- Evan Valentine

STAR WARS: THE HIGH REPUBLIC #6

STAR WARS: THRAWN - ALLIANCES #4

The comic book adaptation of Timothy Zahn's 2018 novel Thrawn: Alliances comes to a head, without fully feeling like a climactic finale. Timothy Zahn and Jody Houser's script contains some fun character interactions and a few intriguing pieces of lore, while still teasing that there's always more in store for the never-ending Star Wars saga. Pat Olliffe and Andrea di Vito's art is the right blend of photorealistic and exaggerated, especially for the era in which the story is set. It might not be earthshattering, but this final issue seems to stick the landing for Star Wars' latest adaptation. -- Jenna Anderson

I learned some things I didn't know about Spider-Man 2099. For example, who his father and brother are, and his complicated family tree. But as far as other aspects of the comic goes, Spider-Man 2099 with a Venom symbiote is properly terrifying. It was cool seeing the internal struggle Miguel O'Hara is under trying to fight off the symbiote's evil influence. What I want to see more of is Spidey versus Venom, though. -- Tim Adams

ULTIMATE X-MEN #2

Ultimate X-Men #2 is an outstanding magical girl-horror mash-up comic that introduces the start of Hisako's supporting cast (and presumable fellow mutant) and expands upon its antagonist in a series of thrilling and terrifically depicted sequences. Oh, and apparently it's a spin on the X-Men, but readers are best served focusing on the story at hand and letting those connections introduce themselves. Peach Momoko spreads the introduction and fixture of Mei, Hisako's outgoing new friend, across several distinct sequences that make this issue read like a short story unto itself. The evolution of their friendship is natural in its depiction and earns the genuine warmth and charms tied to great childhood friendships. Hisako and Mei contrast one another well with distinctive styles and modes of expression; readers will be bound to want to chase after them both even as their adventures darken. Things certainly grow dark in Ultimate X-Men #2 with one particularly effective image that borders upon gore. It is accompanied by returning tropes tied to shadows and eyes bound to haunt readers alongside Hisako and Mei. Ultimate X-Men #2 reaffirms the tremendous strength found in the series' debut with another powerhouse issue telling a story of peerless style and unlike anything Marvel Comics has printed before. -- Chase Magnett

WEAPON X-MEN #2

If it was not immediately clear that Weapon X-Men is just Exiles with a new name, Weapon X-Men #2 would confirm it. Writer Christos Gage deploys the familiar formula, but does a better job with it in this issue than the first. Rather than just making the team of Wolverines all feel the same, there's at least some uniqueness on display here. Artist Yildiray ?Inar gets to show off his ability to draw crazier action beats and quiet dramatic ones, which are fun to behold no matter the context, even if there are some times when the laws of anatomy are thrown out the window. -- Spencer Perry

I know the new X-Men status quo is on the horizon, but can't shake the feeling Marvel is trying to get in as much as it can before the big relaunch. Hence while Wolverine's ongoing "Sabretooth War" is still a lot of fun, it's become more of an Exiles book with each issue (and X-Force, since Laura is still in the fight). As for Wolverine, Sabretooth's ultimate plan to kill him comes up short (shocking I know) and we're setting up for one big final confrontation with three issues left to go. X-MEN '97 #2

Like the first issue before it, X-Men '97 is content to color inside the lines and doesn't offer much beyond what readers expect from a tie-in title. Artist Salva Esp?n, helped by colorist Matt Milla, also continues to capture that specific vibrant aura that surrounded the classic animated series and its modern counterpart. -- Spencer Perry

Sam faces a dark night of her (already very dark) soul as she flees home in the wake of Beneath The Trees Where Nobody Sees #4. It's clear that there's no easy return given her exposure and following Sam as she flies below the radar is interesting enough. New sequences set in the city work to showcase both Sam's ingenuity on the lam and her mental state. The latter portion becomes the focus in a dreamlike sequence in the issue's second half - the best sequence to date from an already impressive miniseries. Every element on the page is utilized to place readers in her headspace, ranging from partially obscured word balloons to wonderful use of color in establishing boundaries. DARK SPACES: DUNGEON #5

Dark Spaces: Dungeon's ending is challenging. What first seems like the climactic showdown is satisfying, but the reader can't shake the feeling that it's over too quickly. One gunshot to the back of the head and that's seemingly it for "The Keep." Madoc can't shake that feeling either, leading to the "true" ending. It lands on the right notes of horror and dread the book has been built on all along, and to Scott Snyder's credit the clues sprinkled throughout previous issues did leave just enough for the final reveal to seem viable. But the final message the ending delivers just doesn't sit right. Can we overcome past trauma? Can we free ourselves of the pain abusers have inflicted if they're confronted properly. This comic book's answer seems to be a quiet yet haunting "no." Like I said, it's challenging. -- Connor Casey

DEADWEIGHTS #1

Creators Tyrone Finch and Sebasti?n Piriz ask, "Is there life after super-villainy?" The first issue wastes no time in arriving at that core conceit, opening in media res as a team of supervillains fall out of the sky, having had their butts handed to them once again by a superteam called the Paladins. However, the debut issue seems unsure how to answer its central question. A clashing of tones that fails to commit to one sensibility or another, or even to the tension between, creates a disorienting reading experience that fails to pose some obvious and important questions about its central characters. -- Jamie Lovett

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: THE THIEF OF MANY THINGS #1

The Thief of Many Things is a one-shot comic focused on the Deck of Many Things, the infamous D&D artifact that was fleshed out in the 2023 rulebook of the same name. The comic follows Rudd, a former paladin of Istus, who was cursed as an oathbreaker after an incident in her past. When a former companion offers her the chance to save a fallen ally (with whom she was romantically entangled), Rudd gets caught up in a scheme to utilize the chaotic deck with destructive results. While I liked the slow burn to the reveal of Rudd's "sin," I felt that the comic too often felt like a hodgepodge of elements from The Deck of Many Things rulebook. The D&D comics often toe the line between story-driven and highlighting bits from recent adventures and rulebooks, I thought this comic leaned a bit too far towards the latter. -- Christian Hoffer

HOUSE OF SLAUGHTER #22

Jace's story has been the backbone of House of Slaughter, and that continues in House of Slaughter #22. While Jace isn't actually featured in the issue all that much, his pretense is felt from the very first page, and Tate Brombal throws a magnificent curveball into the mix that I delightfully didn't see coming. That twist has immediate effects and yet also sets up another cliffhanger that will have fans on the edge of their seats for next issue, and that's on top of the wider range effects that this story will have on the Slaughters and the Order overall. All of this is beautifully (and brutally at times) brought to life by artist Antonio Fuso and colorist Miquel Muerto, who pivot seamlessly between brutal aftermaths and emotional reunions on a dime. House of Slaughter continues to bring powerful and meaningful stories into the Something is Killing the Children universe, and that doesn't appear to be changing anytime soon. -- Matthew Aguilar

LITTLE BLACK BOOK #2

Little Black Book jumps in headfirst on the mystery laid down in its debut issue last month a little too hard here. MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS: THE RETURN #3

Well, they got me on this one. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return #2 had a wealth of big surprises, but while issue #3 has fewer of them, the impact might be greater overall. Writers Amy Jo Johnson and Matt Hotson provide some much needed answers in issue #3, and those answers significantly reframe events you thought you understood. Both Tommy and Rita's stories are affected in major ways, and the stakes are raised in major was as well. The artwork of Nico Leon and colorist Dono Sanchez-Almara is superb throughout, communicating the stakes throughout, though their work on Selena Repulsa and Finster in the present steals the show at every turn, and that's before we even get to that stunning final page. The stage for the finale is set, and it should be epic if issue #3 is anything to go by. -- Matthew Aguilar

MONSTERS ARE MY BUSINESS #1

While it doesn't necessarily reinvent the wheel in terms of apocalyptic and kaiju hybrids, Dark Horse's newest original series does possess a good deal of charm. The stakes are laid out in a straightforward but relatively fun way, with Cullen Bunn's trademarks apparent in even the most pedantic of moments. Patrick Piazzalunga makes some fun decisions with regards to creature design and panel layout, although those choices do create some unnecessary confusion in the latter half of the issue. NAPALM LULLABY #2

Napalm Lullaby #2 improves on its debut by helping fill out just a bit more of its world, but we're still lacking a great deal of context that would generally be needed to truly push this narrative forward. The issue sees our central siblings convince their father to come with them on their mission to kill the religious figurehead that serves as a dictator to their world, but we still don't have a whole lot of reason as to why they are so bent on this quest except now we know that their father escaped from this world's version of "heaven" and is trying to preserve remnants of the old world. There are hints and clues about authoritarianism and things are certainly interesting, but we're still missing a lot of fine detail that would otherwise make this a really engaging story or at least give what is a clear slow burn enough fire to go the distance. -- Nicole Drum

NIGHT PEOPLE #2

Writer Chris Condon continues to do good work sorting the tangled web of Barry Gifford's novel into a comic adaptation, though the full scope of this issue's tale isn't fully revealed until its final pages, which makes the journey a bit of a slog. The series employs a rotating list of artists, with Night People #2 hailing from Alexander Tefenkgi, who excels at close-up images but larger details are lost when the images themselves get too big. Shifting artists is a decent idea for Night People since the story's themselves are unique, but it's hard not to note look of it all is a step down from the first issue. -- Spencer Perry

THUNDERCATS #3

The internal conflicts of the Thundercats have proven to be just as compelling as any call to arms, but Thundercats #3 says why not have both. Writer Declan Shalvey continues to explore the rough transition to power for Lion-O, and the issues between the new leader of the Thundercats and Panthro finally boil over, but not in the way you might expect. The aggression of Panthro and Cheetara specifically was unexpected but welcome, as it allowed the more human elements of these characters to shine through while also moving the grand plot forward. The addition of a fan-favorite character is also a huge plus, and the battle itself between Panthro and Cheetara delivered thanks to the talents of artist Drew Moss and colorist Martina Pignedoli. There are moments throughout the issue that don't meet that same high bar as those battle sequences, but when the book shines it really shines. By issue's end there are two more intriguing threads to deal with moving forward as well, so this adventure only seems to be getting better from here. -- Matthew Aguilar

TRANSFORMERS #7

Transformers #7 marks the start of a new story arc and the addition of a new artist in Jorge Corona following the widely-acclaimed relaunch. Expectations have been set exceedingly high by Daniel Warren Johnson--one of the best cartoonists working in the direct market today--and this follow-up manages to meet the very high bar set in those first six issues. Although it introduces some new elements, including a brief glimpse of the war on Cybertron, the story remains largely focused on the two warring camps of Autobots and Decepticons on Earth. There's a natural flow as characters, robot and human alike, build upon the traumas and tragedies that capped off Transformers #6. What's more is that these follow-on elements, including a leadership crisis amongst the Decepticons, provides abundant opportunities for Corona to make clear why they're a perfect fit for such a visually stunning series. Transformers are every bit as distinctive and expressive in Corona's style and the action sequences still stun with explosive and sudden violence. Corona proves a suitable partner for Johnson with styles that complement one another and maintain a sense of consistency in Transformers' aesthetic. It seems that this series is bound to be good for a long time to come. -- Chase Magnett

UNCANNY VALLEY #1

Uncanny Valley #1 manages to establish its premise but not much else in a debut that seems too brief. It manages to introduce readers to Oliver, a generic young man attending a new school and trying not to cause too many problems for his single mom. Oliver's most interesting attributes have little to do with Oliver himself. Instead, it's the mysterious sort of trouble that follows him that will cue readers into the series' concept and provide some intriguing stylistic touches. Discovering that Oliver is tied to a cartoon world operating under its own physics delivers plenty of interesting touches, but is never genuinely surprising given the issue's cover and solicit. By the issue's end there are sufficient characters and plot hooks established to further develop Oliver and his role in this developing story, but it still lacks sufficient definition to create genuine interest in the characters or story itself. Instead, it relies heavily upon Dave Wachter's varied styles on the page, which typically work well with cartoon-like characters only sometimes seeming like clipart. It's an interesting debut but one that certainly needs more space to develop its ideas and a narrative worth following. -- Chase Magnett

Green Lantern #10 Review: The Lantern Rebellion Begins https://comicbook.com/comics/news/green-lantern-2024-10-review-dc-comics/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 14:15:00 +0000 Matthew Aguilar 92cefa66-7002-4780-ad1c-f8f331a5e119

So much of what's been established in the previous nine issues plays a role in why Green Lantern #10 works so well. Over the course of the series, Adams has pierced the confident facade to explore the quite vulnerable and reflective Jordan underneath it, and it's paid dividends. That established a necessary foundation for Jordan's inevitable reunion with the Corps, but with the context that's established since the series began, that reunion hits very differently.

Hal is always going to be Hal in some foundational ways, and that's evident here, with one decision being right out of the classic Hal playbook. In times past that decision would have felt reckless and selfish, and while there are elements of that in the decision still, the series has given welcome context to what powers those decisions in the first place. While in the past I would have balked at that decision, I immediately understood it here, even if all of the logical arguments against it by the other characters were logically correct. Jordan also comes around to this idea and addresses it within the context of the story, and that ability to self-assess is something Adams has also prioritized during his run.

When we get to the ring-slinging itself, the current predicament limiting the use of those rings creates plenty of fun opportunities. Hal might be a walking battery of willpower, but he's not as comfortable when he can't use the ring. Having Jo and the other Lanterns to play off of, who are far more experienced in this situation, makes for a delightful contrast.

While there are some action sequences, including one particularly thrilling battle towards the end, most of the issue sees the rebellion sneaking around to evade the Ring Hunters, and it gives the issue a much different tone and feel than previous books in the series. Xerm?nico, Nahuelpan, and Rumulo Fajardo Jr. play far more in the shadows and dark corridors as a result, with the costumes being the biggest point of light and color in the scene. The location is a character unto itself and the sense of tension is palpable throughout.

That's also due to the threat of the Ring Hunters, creating a rare instance where the Lanterns aren't the most powerful force in a given battle. This also ties into the foundation established in previous issues, as the recently revealed origins of Hal's ring open up opportunities for Hal to shine and holds some big possibilities for the other Lanterns as well. All of that is touched upon by issue's end, and there are plenty of other elements at play to keep any Green Lantern fan hooked on the grander mystery and the moment-to-moment survival of the Rebellion.

Green Lantern #10 brings Hal back into the orbit of the Green Lantern Corps, but the series' penchant for bringing new ideas into the mix continues, and it makes for a thrilling and intriguing reunion that no Lantern fan will want to miss.

Joker 2 Trailer Teases Joker & Harley's Wedding https://comicbook.com/movies/news/joker-2-trailer-joker-harley-wedding-lady-gaga-musical/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 02:22:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 972af0b8-23cb-43a8-88f5-058a8bd56c9c

The first trailer for Joker: Folie ? Deux debuted on Tuesday, as part of Warner Bros. Pictures' massive presentation at CinemaCon. Joker: Folie ? Deux is set to be a movie musical structured around the love story of Arthur Fleck / Joker (Joaquin Phoenix) and Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga) -- and the trailer just might tease how far that relationship goes. One of the elaborate musical numbers shown in the Joker: Folie ? Deux trailer shows Arthur and Harley on a stage, with Harley walking down a lit runway towards a set of a chapel. While there's no telling what exactly the context of this scene is in Joker: Folie ? Deux -- and whether or not it's actually some sort of dream sequence -- it at least teases that the topic of Joker and Harley's nuptials will come up in the movie.

In the comics, Joker and Harley's relationship has rarely gone towards marriage, especially with more recent comics addressing the problematic or outright toxic nature of their romance. The only major exception was in the Elseworlds story Batman: The White Knight.

What Is Joker 2 About?

Joker: Folie ? Deux will be a musical that follows the twisted romance between Arthur Fleck / Joker and Harley Quinn, with a lot of the film believed to be taking place within Arkham Asylum.

Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker: Folie ? Deux will also feature appearances from Zazie Beetz, Brendon Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Jacob Lofland.

Is Joker 2 in the DC Universe?

Joker: Folie ? That being said, Gunn did stress that the Joker sequel is one of the few upcoming DC films being shepherded by Warner Bros. Pictures, given when the film was first put into development.

"Todd had Joker in full swing by the time we came onboard - I've watched and given notes, but it is mostly with WB, where it started," Gunn wrote. "Everything forward in live-action we're involved with."

First Joker: Folie à Deux Trailer Released https://comicbook.com/movies/news/first-joker-folie-a-deux-trailer-released/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 01:26:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson f9cdd301-5a7d-438a-a6b6-331ab3ed07bc

It's time to put on a happy face, because the best look yet at Joker: Folie ? Deux has arrived. On Tuesday, Warner Bros. Pictures officially released the first trailer for Joker: Folie ? Deux. The film is the sequel to 2019's Joker, which grossed over $1 billion at the global box office and earned a Best Leading Actor Oscar for star Joaquin Phoenix.

This time around, Phoenix's Arthur Fleck will be joined by actress and pop icon Lady Gaga, who has been cast as Harley Quinn. Folie ? Deux has repeatedly been teased to be a musical, and now the trailer provides an inkling of what that entails.

Is Lady Gaga Playing Harley Quinn?

Gaga is the latest actress to portray Harley Quinn in live-action, after Margot Robbie portrayed the character in Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), and The Suicide Squad. With both Harleys existing in separate universes, Robbie has been vocally excited about Gaga's upcoming portrayal.

"It makes me so happy, because I said from the very beginning that all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, the way Macbeth or Batman, always gets passed from great actor to great actor," Robbie previously said. "It's kind of like someone gets to do their Batman, or someone gets to do their Macbeth. I feel like, in not so many cases, are they female characters - Queen Elizabeth I, but beyond that, which I got to have a crack out as well, which I was honored to do. I was like, 'Wow! Cate Blanchett did Queen Elizabeth I. Now I get to.' It's such an honor to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing. And I think she'll do something incredible with it."

CinemaCon 2024: Warner Bros. Brings Out DC Studios, Furiosa, and More https://comicbook.com/movies/news/cinemacon-2024-warner-bros-dc-studios-furiosa-joker-footage/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 01:00:00 +0000 Brandon Davis 29350043-3c20-489e-a005-8eddd53c44f3 Warner Bros. kicked off its annual "Big Picture" presentation at CinemaCon on Tuesday afternoon. Warner Bros. Executives Jeff Goldstein and Andrew Cripp came out dressed as Bettlejuice, after dressing in Barbie themed outfits last year. They start by having fun with their costumes before naming some of the successful Warner Bros. titles from 2023. "You helped bring Pink Fever to the world," they say to the theater owners in attendance. "You helped make Barbie not just the biggest movie of last year but in Warners' 100 years of history." A sizzle reel looks back at the previous films before debuting footage from Furiosa, Mickey 17, Joker 2, and more.

Looking at the success of recent titles such as Dune and Wonka, the attention turns to Godzilla by Kong which has already surpassed $370 million at the worldwide box office. The major upcoming 2024 titles will be previewed during this presentation. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is confirmed to arrive in 2024's holiday season.

Co-CEOs of Warner Bros. Motion Pictures, Pam Abdy and Mike De Luca, take the stage. The first title which will be covered in the presentation if Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. "The epic film canon [George Miller] created in 1979, it continues to deliver on all of those thrills by immersing us in the dystopian post-apocalyptic world that is often imitated but never duplicated." Miller takes the stage with Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy.

"This takes place over 16 to 18 years," Miller said. "We wrtoe the backstories for everybody, of Furiosa, for all those years and also for Mad MAx in the year before. When Fury Road had enough traction, we thought, 'Oh, we've gotta go and do Furiosa,' and here we are. Just finished last week."

Taylor-Joy says, "this is the story of one woman's commitment to relentless hope." Adding, "I think this film more than any other film thst I've made, as a fan of Mad Max...I would step out of myself and go, 'This is happening!'"

"It comes down to the script initially," Hemsworth says of his character. "A twisted, cruel character on one hand but in order for him to lead this horde of bikers and nomadic individuals across the wasteland that there was some positiivity ahead of them, there had to be some charisma. We wanted to weave in charm...but there needed to be a darkness, too." This informs the way Hemsworth's character moved, dressed, and spoke with constant manipulation in mind.

Miller says they had the script for a long time. "I knew of Chris and we somehow met and we talked and in that conversation, very far reaching and multileveled, I thought, basically, 'This guys got a lot of dimensions to him,'" Miller said of Hemsworth.

An extended sneak peek at the film plays. It is broken into parts, with the first seeing Hemsworth's Dr. Dementus finding a young Furiosa. The second sees Furiosa becoming a fighter. The third sees Furiosa seeking revenge. It was several minutes long and action-packed. The film sees Furiosa wanting revenge for the loss of her mother and childhood, neither of which she is able to get back which puts her against Dementus.

The Watchers is up next, a horror film. Ishyana Shamyalan takes the stage, celebrating her first film. "It was very cool to have this baseline book that was there," she said. "The sets in the movie are exactly what I saw when I was reading that for the first time. From there, it was drawing from Irish culture and those stories to build it out and make it a big thing." The movie is going to blend thriller, fantasy, and horror genres.

Next, the Superman movie logo takes the screen. It is bright red and yellow, joined by the classic Superman theme song. James Gunn sent a video from the set of Superman, standing behind sets to record it. It's not revealing anything about the movie, just yet. He highlights Superman being his and Peter Safran's "first feature production" since becoming co-CEOs of Superman. "I can't wait to be there in Vegas with all of you next year as we kick off the summer of Superman," Gunn said. "I also wanted to thank all of you for your efforts for making Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 a hit." To discuss the Superman documentary about the life of Christopher Reeves, Gunn introduces Peter Safran to the stage from his video.

Safran walks out with the new Superman logo still on the screen." Thanks so much for inviting all of us back," Safran said. "It's our job at DC Studios to make movies worth that experierence...sweeping audiences into the skies with Superman." He uses this to transition into a first look at the trailer for Superman: A Christopher Reeves Story.

Horizon: An American Saga is the next title. Kevin Costner says it spoke to him, with a great deal of drama stemming from American's moving west and using resourcefulness to take land and create opportunities for their own futures. It will be a two-part saga. He says the pair are "journey movies," rather than singular plot movies. "Horizon is a journey," he says. "It covers about 12 years. It doesn't really deal with the Civil War but it starts before the Civil War and runs through it."

The next title is Mickey 17. Mickey sees a character who gets a job which demands its employees "to die for a living." Bong Joon-ho takes the stage to discuss the film. It is his first time at CinemaCon. "It's based on a sci-fi novel called Mickey 7 but we made it Mickey 17," Joon-ho said. "The number I the number of times he dies. I kill him ten times more...It's a sci-fi movie but this is just a human story." He says the movie is about a simple man who ultimately ends up saving the world, making it "a very strange type of hero's journey." Joon-ho doesn't feel like he would make such a story if it were typical, so he found a strange way into it. A trailer is introduced, loaded with hugely entertaining footage where Pattinson's Mickey dies over and over again until a pair of Mickey's are alive. A dilemma is present, as the manufacturers want both of them killed off and they seem to be on each other's nerves quite a bit. It's a rich, original, and impressively-textured world.

"He's my hero," Pattinson said of Joon-ho. He was told the part would be impossible. "Read the script and just thought it was one of the most unusual, funny, bizarre, beautiful sci-fi scripts I'd ever read in my life."

M. Night Shyamalan's Trap is up next. "Imagine you guys are the characters in a movie and you guys come to a concert...and the lights go down and you came to see this singer who appears on stage..." Shymalan says, as all of that happens in the room. A singer starts performing in the dark room with the only light being a spotlight on her. "And as you guys are the characters in this wonderful concert...something terrible happens and that's the thriller part!" He introduces the trailer for Trap.

The next title is Bettlejuice Beetlejuice, which has 2024 A.D. written under its logo on the screen. Footage plays at the event, looking back at the original film. Michael Keaton Willem Dafoe (plays Wolf Jackson, Jenna Ortega plays Astrid), and more cast members share their praise for Tim Burton. "It has to be done as close to the way we did it the first time," Keaton said. Justin Theroux compares it to going into the museum of Tim's mind. Loads of practical effects, from exploding stomachs to costumes and prosthetics flash acoss the screen. Tim Burton, through nine movies at Warner Bros, have won 8 Oscars and made more than $5.4 billion at the box office. Beetlejuice Beetljuice will be his 10th movie with WB.

Katherine O'Hara and Tim Burton take the stage, along with Monica Belluccia, Justin Theroux, and Willem Dafoe. Finally, Beetlejuice himself takes the stage, Michael Keaton. "I started thinking about it in the sense of the first one, I really identified with the Lydia charqacter being a weird teenager and then over the years, what happens to people?" Burton said. "We get to see three generations of Deetz women...I just got really interested in that."

"Him and I would kick the notion of it around," Keaton said. Every few years they would discuss a Bettlejuice sequel. "The time was right but also the script was. It's a very difficult thing to write. Then, frankly, I just kind of follow his lead. I'll tell ya this though. It's really f-cking good. In fact, it's great."

O'Hara opens up about returning. She wondered if the film would be made without her. "To get the call from Tim was delightful," she said, sharing her excitement in hearing about what has happened with the characters and how they've evolved. "It's just thrilling." Keaton says there is no sequel without Katherine."

"I remember very well when I saw it and it's a really pleasure to join them on this and also to see them build on something made so many years ago," Dafoe said. "It was beautiful with so many handmade effects." Theroux won't talk about his Rory character yet but compliments the visual feast on set. Burton introduces a new trailer piece for the film. Winona Ryder has to bring Bettlejuice back by saying his name three times, with his first line being, "The juice is loose!" This is followed by him appearing behind her to promise, "I'm gonna make you so happy!" All sorts of creatures and terrors and chaos follow.

The last title will be Joker Folie A Deux. Todd Philllips takes the stage." The truth is, the year of Joker had came out, I had planned to come out here...I did want to say 'Thank you,' to you guys," he said. "About a month before the film came out, the narrative on the film really turned and there starting being a warning on the movie, and the exhibitors didn't budge...I wanna thank you guys."

In regards to continuing the story: "Joaquin and I, while we were shooting the movie, always talked about making a sequel," he revealed. "We were never really serious and we also didn't want to jinx the movie. When the movie became such a big success and Joaquin and I were talking through the pandemic...we just decide to revisit it and we had a blast doing it." He is asked about Lady Gaga's casting. "Gaga, we cast Gaga because she's magic, right? I was a producer on A Star Is Born...that was the first time I'd really met her and got to watch her work and I was like Wow, she has magic in her.'"

Is it a musical? "We've never really talked about it like that but it's a movie where music is an essential element and, to me, it doesn't veer to far from the first film," he said. "Yeah, Arthur is weird and aloof...but he has music in him...it informed a lot of the dancing in the first film...It didn't seem like tjhat big of a step, what we did here. It's different but it'll make sense."

The first trailer for the film plays, talking about and using music right away. Arthur is imprisoned and Gaga's Harley is introduced quite quickly in it. Rather than stand up comedy, Arthur is performing music this time around. The two want to escape together, doing musical theater performances in front of a moon and skyline stage before it cuts to them dancing tin the streets.

The panel concludes with a peek at 2025. Jack Black sends a video from the set of Minecraft. He has a wood block in his hand and makes a cheesy joke about it. "This movie is like a creeper explosion of Minecraft goodness," he says. He drops a bunch of Minecraft keywords before tossing it to Anne Hatheway and Ewan McGregor, who thank exhibitors for their work. David Corenswet and Racehl Brosnahan send a video from the set of Superman, not wearing costumes but an Eagles shirt. They confirm there will be a man in a cape. Maggie Gyllenhaal sends a video from the set of The Bride! Final Destination Bloodlines. Ryan Coogler sends a video from the set of his vampire movie with Michael B. Jordan.

DC's James Gunn Teases "Summer of Superman" for 2025 at CinemaCon https://comicbook.com/movies/news/dc-james-gunn-summer-of-superman-2025-cinemacon/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 00:18:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson fa9885cb-ee72-4c5d-9781-7fdf8a7c756a

James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe is on the horizon, promising to kick off a new era of movies and television shows inspired by DC's iconic comics. The first live-action movie that will be a part of their new DC Studios slate is Superman, a 2025 reboot that is being written and directed by Gunn himself. With Superman still in the middle of production, we'll probably still have to wait a while to see official footage from the film -- but Gunn and Safran did bring something surprising to the recent CinemaCon convention. During Warner Bros. Pictures' panel at the event, the new logo for Superman was shown, which is described as a "bright red and yellow" emblem. There was also a video of Gunn from the movie's set, in which he teases that he and the film's cast and crew will be on hand at the 2025 CinemaCon to kick off the "Summer of Superman." It will remain to be seen exactly what the "Summer of Superman" entails, and whether or not it could be a coordinated marketing campaign a la Warner Bros.' rollout of last year's Barbie.

"I can't wait to be there in Vegas with all of you next year as we kick off the summer of Superman," Gunn said. "I also wanted to thank all of you for your efforts for making Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 a hit."

Superman will also star David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Mar?a Gabriela de Far?a as Angela Spica / The Engineer, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr.

Superman is currently scheduled to be released exclusively in theaters on July 11, 2025.

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story to Get Theatrical Release https://comicbook.com/movies/news/superman-the-christopher-reeve-story-theatrical-release/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 23:56:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson b3039d7a-1e25-4c77-aca5-c8b69a981cd9

Christopher Reeve's portrayal of Superman has become a touchstone in our popular culture, with the actor playing the Man of Steel across a number of movies in the 1970s and 1980s. Reeve's career both on and off the screen, including his advocacy for the disabled community, helped him become an icon, all of which are set to be chronicled in the upcoming documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. Earlier this year, it was announced that the documentary has been acquired by Warner Bros. Pictures -- and now, it has gotten a major update.

On Tuesday, during Warner Bros. Pictures' panel at CinemaCon 2024, it was confirmed that Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story has secured a theatrical release. While exact release details are currently unknown, the film's theatrical debut is expected to be at some point in the fall of 2024.

What Is Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story About?

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story chronicles the life of actor Christopher Reeve after a horseback riding accident leaves him permanently paralyzed from the neck down. Using intimate footage of Reeve and his family, directors Ian Bonh?te and Peter Ettedgui paint a picture of a real-life hero known for his iconic role as Superman. To people who knew him and spent time with him, he was so much more than that. He was a champion for the disabled community, and directors Ian Bonh?te and Peter Ettedgui made it their mission to make that a focal point of the film, highlighting not just Reeve's legacy but that of his children, who work to carry out his mission through The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.

"Everyone at Warner Bros. Discovery is incredibly proud to come together as one company to partner with Christopher Reeve's family and the filmmakers behind Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story and bring his personal journey to audiences the world over," a Warner Bros. Discovery spokesperson said in a statement. "WBD's DC Studios, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures, HBO, CNN Films and Max are grateful for the opportunity to honor one of our company's most cherished creative partners and to celebrate Christopher's rich life and career."

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn confirmed the acquisition in a social media post earlier this year, revealing that he and co-CEO Peter Safran personally helped the film find its home.

"I saw the stunningly beautiful documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story a couple weeks ago," Gunn's post reads. "It emotionally floored me. Peter & I knew DC Studios needed to be involved & I'm grateful to Peter & our WBD family at Warner Bros, HBO, CNN & Max having worked so hard to acquire it. It's a wonderful film by wonderful filmmakers not only for people like me who love Reeve's work but for everyone."

John Cena Reveals Huge Update on James Gunn's Peacemaker Season 2 https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/john-cena-peacemaker-james-gunns-season-2-update/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 19:11:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 1032b9c4-ea81-4ec4-a209-c08f32bd90e0

Peacemaker star John Cena shared an update on when Season 2 is ready to get filming. After an absolutely electrifying run-in during WrestleMania XL, the WWE Superstar joined The Pat McAfee Show to talk about the fate of the Max favorite and his future in the squared circle. Cena mentioned his upcoming feature Heads of State. But, his time with Peacemaker Season 2 will be coming up very soon. He's filming right after he gets done with that movie. That makes sense as James Gunn will likely be wrapping up Superman's filming then and the schedules all line up. After that, The Franchise is hoping that he gets one more crack at a WWE run.

"We started filming [a movie] before the strike called Heads of State Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Idris Elba," Cena began. "And then straight from that to Peacemaker Season 2. That'll take us through just about Christmas. I'm crossing my fingers, and toes, and my heart, that maybe - maybe just maybe - I can tell the Hollywood World to pump the brakes for a while and come back to my family for one last run. I hope, I don't know. I hope, I'm trying, we'll see what happens."

Peacemaker Season 2 Updates

Gunn has been super open about the scheduling for his DC Universe projects. As one of the most well-received pieces of superhero media of the last 5 years, a lot of people what to know what's been going on with Peacemaker. It turns out that the Max show will begin filming this summer. From there, Gunn's dance card is pretty full with Waller and guiding the larger DC Comics picture on film. He won't be directing every single episode of these shows. But, he's got his hands in a whole lot of the production side for each one.

"The source is kind of iffy but this is true," Gunn said on social media when asked about Season 2's summer filming.. "John Cena shared this on Howard Stern last week. To answer your follow-up questions: yes, we'll be shooting Superman & Peacemaker simultaneously; yes, I've written all the episodes; but, no, in the interest of getting the show out there I won't be able to direct them all (only some); & yes, Waller's still happening & Jeremy & Christal are hard at work writing great stuff, but the schedule was impacted by the strikes so Waller will come after PM in the larger order of things."

John Cena's Barbie Cameo

barbie-john-cena.jpg

Fans have seen Cena pop-up all over. That includes in the buff at The Oscars and during Barbie. On The Howard Stern Show, the WWE star explained that he almost didn't get to be a mermaid in the Oscar-winning movie because his agency didn't think it was a great idea.

"[The agency is] just going on what they know, and what they know is, 'This entity, this commodity gravitates towards these things, we should stay in this lane,'" Cena explained. "But I'm not a commodity. I'm a human being, and I operate under the construct of every opportunity is an opportunity."

"I read the script of the movie and I tried my hardest to be in it," Cena added. "Margot [Robbie] was like, 'We'll make you a mermaid. You'll be in it for half a day.''Yeah, sure. But I think the perspective from an agency standpoint was, 'This is beneath you,' which I get that. But also to the agency's credit, immediately they acquiesced."

How excited are you for Peacemaker Season 2? Let us know down in the comments!

Alex Ross and Steve Darnall's out-of-print Uncle Sam comic is coming back just in time for the election later this year. The bestselling cover artist and renowned creator first collaborated on Uncle Sam for DC's Vertigo imprint in 1997. It's been out of print for over a decade, but will soon return with even more extra content thanks to Abrams ComicArts. This is the latest collaboration between Ross and Abrams ComicArts, with the publisher releasing Fantastic Four: Full Circle, the first graphic novel written and illustrated by Ross, which ComicBook.com announced back in December 2021. And now, we have the first look at the new Uncle Sam cover.

ComicBook.com can exclusively reveal the Alex Ross cover for Uncle Sam: Special Election Edition. It releases on August 6th and comes with a new cover by Alex Ross and an afterword by Ross, along with a new afterword and an expanded illustrated essay on the history and iconography of Uncle Sam by Darnall.

"After being out of print for almost ten years, the time has come for Uncle Sam to be back on the shelves. I am grateful to our friends at DC for the ability to add this timely and seminal book to our list," said Charles Kochman, editor-in-chief of Abrams ComicArts.

"Collaborating with my friend Alex Ross on this story was--and is--one of the greatest pleasures of my professional life," said Steve Darnall. "Of course, every writer harbors the hope that their work will endure over time, which is why I'm so pleased that Abrams ComicArts is reintroducing Uncle Sam to the twenty-first century."

Alex Ross added, "I'm so proud of the work Steve Darnall and I did for the Uncle Sam book and thrilled that it's going to be back in print. Uncle Sam was created to respond to real issues in our world and country. It is the most relevant thing I've been a part of."

What is Uncle Sam: Special Election Edition about?

A description of the comic reads, "UNCLE SAM: SPECIAL ELECTION EDITION is a vibrant, hallucinatory tour of modern America--the story of a star-spangled, ragged vagrant named Sam who is guided by the voices in his head and his own fractured memories. Absorbed by history-traveling visions of America's dark past, Uncle Sam struggles to remember his true identity and piece together the scattered clues of his own experiences in this deep and thoughtful look at America's checkered past. Scripted by Steve Darnall and fully painted by Alex Ross, UNCLE SAM returns in print just when it is needed most--in time for the 2024 presidential election--as a reminder of American ideals, the promise of our nation, and the democracy that is at stake."

Uncle Sam: Special Election Edition goes on sale August 6th, and retails for $25.99 in the U.S. and $32.99 in Canada. You can pre-order a copy at the Abrams Books website.

As revealed on social media, Joker: Folie ? Deux will drop its first trailer on April 9th at 9:30 PM ET. The fresh footage will debut at CinemaCon and will be made public online afterwards.

Joker's social accounts announced the trailer time alongside a snippet scene of Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck laughing hysterically in an outside area of a psych ward.

How Much Music Will Joker 2 Have?

While Joker 2 has been classified as a musical, there has been some back and forth regarding the amount of tunes in the sequel.

"All I can say is there is going to be a lot of music," Joker composer Hildur Gu?nad?ttir told ComicBook.com last September. "That's all I can give away."

In another interview, director of photography Lawrence Sher declared that Joker 2 is more of a movie with music rather than a complete musical.

"It's got some music. It's not a musical per say. But it just has music in it, that's all," Sher said. "Music is a part of the movie and the characters, but I don't know if it's a musical. There's a lot of music in the first Joker as well."

"Oh, it's gonna segue into a musical?" Joker actor Robert De Niro reacted while speaking to ComicBook.com. "I read that somewhere, with Joaquin Phoenix too. Who knows how they're doing it? It's interesting."

Joker: Folie ? Deux hits theaters on October 4th, 2024.

Superman: Nathan Fillion Vandalizes DC Set With James Gunn-Themed Stickers https://comicbook.com/movies/news/superman-nathan-fillion-dc-set-james-gunn-stickers/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:53:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 33862678-d99f-42b3-a867-abb36e3d94a8

Production is now underway on James Gunn's Superman, which is set to usher in a new era for DC movies onscreen. While a lot of the specifics surrounding Superman have remained a mystery, Gunn has been sharing a number of fun behind-the-scenes glimpses on social media -- including a pretty meta one. On Monday, Gunn shared that Nathan Fillion, who is playing Guy Gardner / Green Lantern in Superman, has been sharing "What Would James Gunn Do?" stickers throughout the film's set.

"So @nathanfillion brought a bunch of stickers he's put all over the Superman set today (including @stefceretti's computer)," Gunn's post reads.

Who Is DC's Guy Gardner?

Created by John Broome and Gil Kane in 1968's Green Lantern #59, Guy is a blue-collar man who accidentally becomes a backup Green Lantern to Hal Jordan. He has gone on to have a unique DC tenure, both as a Lantern, a member of the Justice League International, and as the alien Warrior.

Guy Gardner has previously been portrayed in live-action by Matthew Settle in the ill-fated Justice League of America TV movie of 1997. Finn Wittrock was set to portray the character in Max's Green Lantern series, before it was scrapped and retooled into the current DCU Lanterns series.

John Cena Wants to Put Hollywood on Hold for One Last WWE Run https://comicbook.com/wwe/news/john-cena-hollywood-on-hold-one-last-wwe-run/ Mon, 08 Apr 2024 18:52:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 0eed8821-edd6-405b-92cd-88b1f6284ae8 John Cena is willing to delay his Hollywood career if it means one last run in WWE. The Peacemaker actor made a surprise appearance during the WrestleMania 40 main event, aiding Cody Rhodes in finishing his story and winning the WWE Undisputed Universal Championship. Cena made a return to WWE last year, as one of the many WWE Superstars feuding with Roman Reigns and the Bloodline. Cena wasn't the only WWE Legend to show up in the WrestleMania XL main event, with Undertaker and The Rock also getting involved. WrestleMania 40 ended on a high note, which has Cena excited at the prospect of a final run.

"I'm crossing my fingers, and toes, and my heart, that maybe - maybe just maybe - I can tell the Hollywood World to pump the brakes for a while and come back to my family for one last run," John Cena said on the Pat McAfee Show the morning after WrestleMania. The crowd in attendance at WWE World gave those comments a loud applause. "I hope, I don't know. I hope, I'm trying, we'll see what happens," he added. Cena also joked that his record in a WWE ring the last three years hasn't been stellar, to which McAfee quipped that they should send The Miz in as a "slumpbuster."

John Cena squares off against The Rock at WrestleMania 40

John Cena's music hit at WrestleMania 40 after Solo Sikoa attempted to help Roman Reigns beat Cody Rhodes in the main event. A Samoan Spike and Spear weren't enough to put Cody down, but when Solo and Roman started to go on the offensive again, John Cena's music hit. He reached down to the ring, giving Attitude Adjustment's to Solo and Roman, with Solo getting a second one onto an announce table.

Then, The Rock's music played, and the two rivals stared each other down in the middle of the ring. Cena gave Rock a "You Can't See Me," but fell to a Rock Bottom. Cena would later be among the WWE Superstars to come to the ring to applaud and celebrate Cody Rhodes on dethroning Roman Reigns to win the Undisputed Universal Championship.

The Rock and John Cena faced each other in the main events of WrestleMania 28 and WrestleMania 29. At the time, Cena called The Rock out for leaving WWE to go Hollywood, and now Cena is the one that has gone Hollywood, starring in The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and the Fast & Furious franchise.

What do you think about John Cena making one last WWE run before retiring? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

A Batman Villain Is Gotham City's New Police Commissioner https://comicbook.com/comics/news/batman-villain-gotham-city-police-commissioner-vandal-savage/ Mon, 08 Apr 2024 01:10:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 655d6df5-d309-4072-b18a-769afa2088d7

[Warning: This article contains spoilers for Batman (Vol. 3) #146.] The Gotham War is over, but the aftershocks continue to shake up issues of Batman. First, the villain Vandal Savage bought Wayne Manor from Gotham National Bank after Bruce Wayne used his family home as collateral to finance his brownstone. With his purchase of Wayne Manor, the immortal caveman from the Stone Age had himself "the finest cave in the finest city in the world": the Batcave. Then Batman/Catwoman: The Gotham War: Scorched Earth revealed that the cave contained the largest piece of meteor fragment that Vandal needed to rejuvenate his powers so that Gotham could be "ruled by the immortal."

Following issues saw Bruce's backup persona -- the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh -- upload his consciousness into Failsafe, Batman's contingency plan, and then declare martial law on Gotham City. In Batman #145, the rogue robo-Batman imprisoned Bruce in the lower levels of Blackgate Penitentiary with Vandal, who revealed that Zur-En-Arrh/Failsafe seized control of the mansion and the Batcave in his crusade to eradicate crime in Gotham City.

Vandal ominously told Bruce that "the law" would help him retake what had become his, but before he could get answers, Failsafe's robot guards subdued Bruce and brought him to the Warden: Dr. Daniel Captio, Bruce's mentor who trained him to unlock his mind and unleash Zur-En-Arrh.

batman-vandal-savage.png

Meanwhile, Gotham City Mayor Chris Nakano confided in Commissioner Renee Montoya that he was under pressure from "outside forces" who want change in Gotham. Those forces started to converge in this week's Batman #146. With the city under the control of Failsafe, who has been violently apprehending escaped criminals like the Riddler and Killer Croc as the new Batman, Bruce escaped Blackgate during a prison riot just as Mayor Nakano learned that another escaped inmate was on live television seeking asylum: Vandal Savage. "It's happening," the mayor said.

batman-146-gotham-mayor.png

Meanwhile, Failsafe seemingly convinced Superman that he's really Batman and warned that "people in the shadows" were about to anoint Vandal Savage as police commissioner. "Dark forces are always at play here, pulling the strings," said Gotham's new Dark Knight. "People are going to die... unless I'm at my best. No more crimes, Clark. No more suffering. Isn't that the dream?"

When Superman asked what happens if Batman goes too far, Failsafe responded: "You'll try and stop me. You'll try. And you'll fail... because Batman always wins."

Batman #146 is on sale now from DC Comics.

Reacher Star Alan Ritchson Says He Wants to Play Batman https://comicbook.com/dc/news/reacher-star-alan-ritchson-says-he-wants-to-play-batman/ Sun, 07 Apr 2024 14:53:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 124118b6-f9ef-4cd9-a06a-04e968be5799

James Gunn is currently in the midst of filming the new Superman, and David Corenswet is taking over the role of the titular hero, which means many are wondering who will play Batman in the rebooted franchise. It was previously announced that The Brave and The Bold will mark the first Batman story in the new DCU, and there have been many fan casts for the next Dark Knight. One person whose name has been thrown around a few times is Alan Ritchson, who is best known for starring in Prime Video's Reacher. The actor has expressed interest in playing Batman in the past and recently said it again in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

"I would love to play Batman. There, I said it, okay? I'll shout it from the rooftops: 'I wanna be Bruce Wayne!,'" Ritchson proclaimed. "Here's the thing about Batman. You know what his superpower is? Intelligence. Dude is the smartest superhero there is. He's inventive, and he's got all the gadgets, but he's super smart. I want to be that guy. And, also, to have a cave with, like hypercars, sports cars, and awesome motorcycles."

"The fact that people are interested in me playing Batman is a real honor and privilege. It's one of the first characters I fell in love with as a child: I still remember the big, long pistol coming out of Joker's pants as he goes to shoot down the Batplane," Ritchson previously told BroBible's Post Credit Podcast. "Those iconic moments really resonated with me as a child. For there to even be a conversation or a rumor mill surrounding this role, for me... all I can do is laugh. I just think it's wild that's where we are,"

"As huge as this rumor mill is, I feel like this part should be offered on a silver platter at this point," Ritchson joked in another interview with ComicBook.com. "I would love to play Batman. But, I'm not yet Batman. I don't know what, I don't know what Gunn's approach is gonna be. But, yeah, that'd be great. What? He's one of the most iconic characters of all the."

Is Reacher Getting a Season 3?

Before the second season of Reacher premiered on Prime Video, the streamer announced the series had been renewed for a third season. Ritchson returned to production this fall and shared news of the renewal with a video from the set. During an interview with ComicBook.com, Ritchson teased what fans can expect from the titular character when the show returns.

"I can't say too much about Season 3, but I will say there's a lot of classic Reacher stories which are just adventures that he gets sucked into in a big way," Ritchson told us. "And we get to enjoy Reacher in a new world. It may not have anything to do with family, with his past, he's just living that adventure out and that's kind of the direction that we've gone and it seems to really be working."

What Does James Mangold's Latest Star Wars Update Mean for DC's Swamp Thing? https://comicbook.com/movies/news/james-mangold-star-wars-update-swamp-thing/ Sat, 06 Apr 2024 04:28:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 1ad38976-0d6a-4395-b993-70e55ac7bfff

James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe is beginning to come to fruition, thanks to a number of upcoming movies and Max-exclusive television series. The duo have already amassed a pretty significant creative team as part of DC Studios, including James Mangold, who is set to write and direct a new live-action Swamp Thing movie. Although it has been unclear exactly when Mangold's Swamp Thing movie will debut, and how it could fit into the DCU's early "Chapter One: Gods and Monsters" slate, a new report might add another wrinkle to things. The Hollywood Reporter recently confirmed that House of Cards and Star Wars: Andor's Beau Willimon is co-writing Mangold's forthcoming Star Wars movie, which is operating under the working title of Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi. The report states that although Dawn of the Jedi does not yet have a release date, Mangold "is expected to turn his attention" to the film after he finishes his upcoming Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown.

So, what does this mean for Swamp Thing? At the moment, it's not entirely clear, especially since there's always a chance that production schedules could shift around for one reason or another once Mangold completes A Complete Unknown. But if The Hollywood Reporter's forecasting is accurate, it sounds like production wouldn't begin on Swamp Thing until way after Dawn of the Jedi. That isn't to say that work on Swamp Thing would start completely from scratch, however, as Mangold has previously indicated that he has been developing the scripts for both Dawn of the Jedi and Swamp Thing concurrently. Therefore, it's not out of the realm of possibility that the script for the latter could be locked and loaded to begin production after Mangold finishes the former. A number of other films are on the DCU's slate until then, with Superman and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow either already filming or reported to be filming this year, and The Brave and the Bold, The Authority, and a reported Teen Titans movie in play as well. And considering the fact that the DCU doesn't have release dates for most of its projects set in stone, there's definitely some flexibility for whenever Mangold's Swamp Thing were to come to fruition.

What Is Swamp Thing About?

While exact plot and casting details surrounding Swamp Thing remain under wraps, Mangold has teased how his approach would honor the comics in a new context.

"To me, the idea of making almost a noir, mystery, horror film about a guy who wakes up and he's this thing," Mangold explained in a 2023 interview. "There's an amnesiac quality of, 'How did I get here and who did this to me?' So I'm envisioning a horror-noir film following a creature that can't be seen, trying to piece together from fragments of memories, what happened and who did it. And none of this runs counter to the Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson and all the great work that went on ... I'm just framing it up in a new movie context, but that's all they were exploring in these comics and so beautifully."

Superman: James Gunn Reveals How Much of Movie Has Been Filmed https://comicbook.com/dc/news/superman-james-gunn-reveals-how-much-movie-has-been-filmed/ Fri, 05 Apr 2024 21:40:00 +0000 Spencer Perry 1cab97f4-5500-4fe9-92e1-baa3b0a1909b

Superman director James Gunn remains active on social media despite being in the middle of filming the first DCU movie. "Middle" of filming also might be generous as the director took to Threads to reveal the precise percentage that they've filmed of the new movie. Though the filmmaker first debunked a major rumor about the upcoming movie, Gunn responded to a fan that noted how eager they were to see an actual photo of his version of Superman. Gunn replied, "And I'm almost ready to show it to you (even though we're probably only 18% or so through it).

Gunn's initial post about the new Superman movie was one where he addressed a new rumor making its way around the internet. Fans had become convinced from unverified reports that Superman's main villain wouldn't be Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor but rather Ultraman, the alternate and evil version of Superman. The director was quick to dash that and note fans shouldn't believe every rumor they see online.

"The primary protagonist of Superman is, shockingly, Superman. The main villain of Superman is, shockingly, Lex Luthor," Gunn wrote. "I don't know where all the stuff is coming from that it's something other than this. There are so many stories coming out every day it's difficult to deal with and everytime I strike something down I'm giving it attention. So, I'll say again, don't believe anything unless you see it HERE (& why would you want to know everything before the movie comes out anyway?)."

It's worth noting that in the press surrounding 2025's Superman another character has been teased as a villain, Mar?a Gabriela de Far?a's Angela Spica aka The Engineer. In the pages of DC Comics, The Engineer is a member of the antihero group The Authority, which despite veering from the optimism of Superman himself, aren't really villains. It's possible that Superman will frame The Engineer as a secondary antagonist that Superman is able to turn to the side of good, and likely set up the previously announced movie based on The Authority.

David Corenswet (The Politician) will lead the cast of Superman: Legacy, playing Superman / Clark Kent. He'll be flanked in the movie by a host of notable actors filling key roles including Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road) as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo (Vacation) as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion (Firefly) as Hal Jordan, Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho, Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific. with Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and Mar?a Gabriela de Far?a as Angela Spica aka The Engineer.

Superman: Legacy will be the first movie in the new DCU and is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 11, 2025, premiering just nine days after the next Jurassic World movie and two weeks before Marvel's highly anticipated Fantastic Four reboot.

Superman: James Gunn Debunks Controversial New Villain Rumors https://comicbook.com/movies/news/superman-james-gunn-debunks-new-villain-rumors-ultraman-lex-luthor/ Fri, 05 Apr 2024 20:31:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson f0602a88-99b8-4f22-8ca0-0096248fe3ab

DC's Superman reboot is now in production, with writer-director James Gunn spearheading a new era for the man of steel. Plenty of rumors have swirled around Superman, trying to guess what plot or surprises might be in store for the film ahead of its planned release in the summer of 2025. One recent one has concerned the film's villain, suggesting that there could be a clone or evil alternate version of Superman (David Corenswet), potentially engineered by Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult). The rumor has been speculated about a lot in recent days, with some fans worrying it might be too similar to previous big-screen storylines like Nuclear Man in Superman IV: A Quest for Peace or even Doomsday in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. On Friday, Gunn took to Threads to debunk the rumor altogether, confirming that Clark and Lex remain the central rivalry of Superman.

"The primary protagonist of Superman is, shockingly, Superman," Gunn's post reads. "The main villain of Superman is, shockingly, Lex Luthor. I don't know where all the stuff is coming from that it's something other than this. There are so many stories coming out every day it's difficult to deal with and everytime I strike something down I'm giving it attention. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Leak Reveals Playable Deathstroke https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/suicide-squad-kill-the-justice-league-deathstroke/ Fri, 05 Apr 2024 19:10:00 +0000 Tyler Fischer 422a3a7f-6cf5-48de-84db-cab52619be37

According to a new report, Deathstroke is going to be added to Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League as a playable character, but fans of the DC game are going to have to wait a bit before they get their hands on the character. The report comes the way of industry insider and leaker, Miller Ross, who also recently revealed that Kevin Conroy recorded dialogue for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League post-launch content before his passing in 2022.

In a thread on social media platform X, Ross claims that Deathstroke will be added to the game as a playable character alongside the release of Season 4. When is the release of Season 4? Well, Ross claims the current plan is for Season 4 to begin and release sometime in January 2025.

According to Ross, in the game, Deathstroke is in "two minds about rescuing the man who humiliated him in 2015's Arkham Knight," which is Batman.

"Batman returns to Metropolis in Suicide Squad's upcoming 4th season, after being rescued from a medieval-themed Elseworld of supervillain Brainiac's design, joining The Flash and Green Lantern as the Justice League continues to reform following the events of the game's campaign," claims Ross.

Ross continues: "Season 4 of Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League is currently slated to commence in January, 2025. The season also brings Deathstroke into the fray as a new playable character, who is of two minds about rescuing the man who humiliated him in 2015's Arkham Knight."

Ross concludes by noting that right now the plan is to end the game's support after five season due to the lack of interest the game has been generating since its release.

"This storyline concludes in the game's 5th season, when the reassembled Justice League join forces with ARGUS to end Brainiac's multiversal reign of terror," claims Ross. "Sources tell me that this will likely serve as the game's finale, with the recent Season 1 doing little to reignite sales."

Of course, take everything here with a grain of salt. This is a leak, not official information. Further, even if everything here is accurate, it doesn't mean it will remain accurate over time. Further, there is a distinct possibility the plug will be pulled on this game before any of this content ever sees the light of day.

Kevin Conroy Reportedly Recorded Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Dialogue for Post-Launch Content https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/suicide-squad-kill-the-justice-league-batman-kevin-conroy/ Fri, 05 Apr 2024 18:38:00 +0000 Tyler Fischer 5062852a-c9ae-4fef-9f9f-60d9359a9867

According to a new report, Kevin Conroy recorded Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League dialogue for post-launch content featuring Batman before he pass away. The legendary actor passed back on November 10, 2022, and while Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League wasn't technically his final performance as Batman, Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part 3 was, it was one of the final pieces of his work to release. That said, if a new report is accurate, there may be more Conroy Batman content to come.

With Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League flopping earlier this year, future content for the game is no doubt up in the air, however, right now it sounds like it is still being planned and worked on by developer Rocksteady Studios, under WB Games. And apparently the plan is for Batman to feature heavily in this content.

The report comes the way of the fairly reliable Miller Ross, who revealed all of this information in a recent post on X. According to Ross, he has been told by "multiple sources" that Kevin Conroy recorded dialogue for the game's post-launch campaign before his passing.

'Batman returns to Metropolis in Suicide Squad's upcoming 4th season, after being rescued from a medieval-themed Elseworld of supervillain Brainiac's design, joining The Flash and Green Lantern as the Justice League continues to reform following the events of the game's campaign," says Ross of the upcoming content.

Ross continues by noting Season 4 of the game is slated to release in January 2025, and will also introduce Deathstroke as a new playable character. Deathstroke is said to be of "two minds about rescuing the man who humiliated him in 2015's Arkham Knight

"This storyline concludes in the game's 5th season, when the reassembled Justice League join forces with ARGUS to end Brainiac's multiversal reign of terror," adds Miller. " Sources tell me that this will likely serve as the game's finale, with the recent season 1 doing little to reignite sales."

This is where the report ends. Of course, take everything here with a grain of salt. This is all unofficial information. That said, the source in question is fairly reliable. Even if this information is correct though, it is subject to change. It is very easy to imagine a world where this game gets nowhere near Season 4 due to a lack of interest.

At the moment, Gunn and Safran have not cast a new actor to portray Bruce Wayne / Batman in their new DCU, with Gunn hinting that the casting decision is still "miles and miles away." He has also confirmed that Batman will not make an appearance in his forthcoming film Superman (formerly Superman: Legacy), which is now in production and serves as the first film in his and Safran's new franchise.

"He can't appear in Superman Legacy because he's not in the script," Gunn revealed on Threads earlier this year.

What Is The Brave and the Bold About?

The Brave and the Bold is confirmed to star Bruce and his son, Damian Wayne / Robin, with Gunn and Safran teasing that the film might feature other characters from the larger "Bat-family."

"This is the introduction of the DCU's Batman..." Gunn explained to reporters in January of this year. "This is the story of Damian Wayne, who is Batman's actual son who we didn't know existed for the first eight to 10 years of his life. He was raised as a little murderer and assassin. He's a little son of a bitch. He's my favorite Robin. It's based on the Grant Morrison comic book's run, which is one of my favorite Batman runs, and we are putting that all together right now."

"And this is obviously a feature film, and it's going to feature other members of the extended 'Bat-family', just because we feel like they've been left out of the Batman stories in the theater for far too long," Safran added.

Action Comics #1 Sells for Record Amount at Auction https://comicbook.com/comics/news/action-comics-1-sells-for-record-amount-at-auction/ Fri, 05 Apr 2024 11:15:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame ba3ded18-6e1f-47e5-b597-3e0a10ec7887

A copy of Action Comics #1, the 1938 comic book that introduced Superman to the world, sold for $6 million Thursday at Heritage Auctions. The sale took place during the first session of Heritage's four-day Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction. Graded at 8.5 by CGC, the issue marks one of the best-condition copies known to exist in the world. According to a statement from Heritage, only two previous copies have ever been graded higher. This is also only the second comic ever to sell for over $5 million and -- surprise! -- the previous record-holder was also a copy of Action Comics #1 from back in 2022.

A second copy of Action Comics sold at the same auction, breaking a different record -- professionally restored to "an apparent grade" of 8.0, per Heritage, the comic sold for $576,000. That's the most ever for a restored comic.

"The first three lots today would be tough to beat when it comes to exciting bidding wars - the all-time record for a comic book, bracketed by two absolutely stunning surprises," said Heritage Auctions Vice President Barry Sandoval in a press-release. "We're thrilled to have made history today with an auction that's rich in history, encompassing everything from a pre-Golden Age Superman artifact to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. We couldn't be happier for our consignors and those winning bidders who acquired items without equal."

There are 78 copies of Action Comics No. 1 in CGC's population report, with the grading service estimating there are only about 100 surviving copies of the comic at all. In September of last year, Heritage sold an issue graded CGC 0.5 for $408,000.

Thursday also saw the sale of Jerry Siegel's historic 1934 letter to comic strip artist Russell Keaton, which described The Man of Steel who would have been a time-traveler from the distant future. The artifact realized $264,000 to open the four-day Comics & Comic Art event.

Heritage's Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction continues here through April 7.

Superman: James Gunn Reveals Hilarious Video From Set https://comicbook.com/movies/news/superman-movie-james-gunn-set-video-dc/ Fri, 05 Apr 2024 04:16:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely 4f20a48e-e34a-4329-8d02-d7a5cd38e2cd

The live-action DC Universe is getting a fresh start in 2025, kicking things off with a brand new iteration of Superman from filmmaker and DC Studios steward James Gunn. The film, simply titled Superman, sees David Corenswet take on the role of Clark Kent, and filming is now underway. Throughout the entire process, Gunn has been sharing photos and updates about the experience.

On Thursday, Gunn shared a funny video from the set of Superman, letting fans see the types of little things the cast and crew do to bring each other a few laughs on a daily basis. The video shows a monitor on the set, which features a clip of an animated Superman scarfing down hamburgers. This is what plays on all the video assist screens during lunch breaks.

"This is what Porkchop plays on our video assist screens when we go to lunch," Gunn wrote in the post.

Superman Table Read

There has understandably been a lot of hype surrounding the new Superman film, an excitement shared by everyone working on the project. The first table read, after the main characters had all been cast, was something of a milestone as production approached. Rachel Brosnahan, who stars as Lois Lane, opened up about how special that first table read was.

"It was pretty amazing," Brosnahan told Entertainment Tonight. "Some of us met for the first time. Some of us got to see each other again. It was amazing to hear the script out loud. As with all of these films, there's a lot of action sequences and things. So to hear the pacing of the film and to get to hear these characters occupied by the actors who play them is really fun. It's also a great group. You can't ask for more than that when doing something like this."

The New DC

This Superman film is just the start of a new connected universe for DC Studios, one what will encompass film and television, live-action and animation.

"A lot of people think it's going to be Marvel 2.0, and definitely I learned a lot of stuff at Marvel. I think that we have a lot of differences," Gunn explained. "We are telling a big, huge, central story that is like Marvel, except for, I think that we're a lot more planned out than Marvel from the beginning because we've gotten a group of writers together to work that story out completely. But we're also creating a universe that is like Star Wars, where there's different times, different places, different things, or Game of Thrones, where characters are a little bit more morally complex."

Superman arrives in theaters on July 11, 2025.

Suicide Squad Comic Reveals Scarecrow's Fate After Batman: Arkham Knight https://comicbook.com/comics/news/batman-arkham-knight-scarecrow-fate-suicide-squad-kill-the-justice-league-comic/ Fri, 05 Apr 2024 01:15:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo ba5201e1-1e8e-4226-9b26-df10602d2829

[Warning: This article contains spoilers for Suicide Squad: Kill Arkham Asylum #3.] Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League players might have revisited the Batman: Arkham games in The Batman Experience, but one rogue is reliving the horrors all over again: Dr. Jonathan Crane, a.k.a. Scarecrow. In 2015's Batman: Arkham Knight, the fear-striking supervillain plunged Gotham City into a waking nightmare, terrorized its citizens, and ultimately unmasked Batman, exposing Bruce Wayne's secret identity to the world. But the Dark Knight mastered fear itself... and then subjected Crane to a dose of his own fear toxins, scaring Crane into submission with frightful flashes of a demonic, red-eyed Bat Man.

This week's Suicide Squad: Kill Arkham Asylum #3 -- the official Kill the Justice League prequel comic set five years after Arkham Knight -- reveals that Scarecrow has been insensible and incomprehensible ever since his final encounter with Batman. Once a prolific professor of psychology, Crane's exposure to his fear toxin has reduced him to an inmate who babbles such incoherent phrases as "rodent...abyss...eternal...pancake" and "putty...shenanigans...aquamarine...perineum."

suicide-squad-kill-arkham-asylum-scarecrow-harley-quinn.png

"Scarecrow hasn't been the same... not since Batman," explains Arnold Wesker, the Ventriloquist, matter-of-factly. "When he got an off-the-charts dose of his own medicine. Fear toxin, that is." With the lunatics running Arkham Asylum after A.R.G.U.S. Director Amanda Waller deactivated the security protocols -- freeing Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Boomerang, King Shark, and dozens of Gotham's most wanted, including Killer Croc, Clayface, and Man-Bat -- the insane criminal formerly known as Dr. Harleen Quinzel insists she understands Dr. Crane's nonsense.

In the chaos, the trio of Harley, Crane, and Wesker escape a rampaging Killer Croc, and the assassin Deathstroke shoots and kills the Gotham gangster known as Great White Shark (the second Batman villain to die in Kill Arkham Asylum). The riot turns into a raid as the inmates reclaim their gear and weapons, with Harley outfitting Crane in his "oh-so-fashionable burlap" Scarecrow costume in an attempt to fix his fractured psyche.

Moments after Wesker reunites with his Scarface puppet, an armored Arkham Enhanced Defense Soldier from the Freeze-Fire Unit wielding a flamethrower and a freeze gun turns Ventriloquist and Scarface into ice statues that Harley shatters with a touch (bringing the series' Arkham kill count to 3).

suicide-squad-kill-arkham-asylum-scarecrow.png

The flames trigger a PTSD response from the scaredy cat Scarecrow, who envisions Batman in the flames. Scarecrow, screaming "Bat death!," flees in fear as Harley escapes Arkham Asylum alone. After all, to quote Crane: "Without fear, life is meaningless."

Suicide Squad: Kill Arkham Asylum #3 (of 5) is now on sale from DC Comics.

Rob Liefeld to Publish a Memoir in 2025 https://comicbook.com/comics/news/rob-liefeld-publish-memoir-2025-robservations/ Thu, 04 Apr 2024 17:00:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson deba507b-16c5-4a44-a6d4-8643f85605a4

After spending decades in the comic book industry, co-founding Image Comics and creating characters such as Deadpool and Cable, Rob Liefeld's story is about to be told in a whole new way. On Thursday, it was announced that Liefeld will be publishing Robservations, a memoir recounting his life and career. Robservations, which shares its name with Liefeld's ongoing podcast, will feature ten original sketches, as well as behind-the-scenes anecdotes, reflections on his career-defining decisions, and little-known facts about the comic book industry. The memoir, which is being published by BenBella Publishing, is expected to debut at some point in early 2025.

"I have had a lifelong love affair with comic books," Liefeld said in a statement. "They have been my passion since I was seven years old. Having been fortunate to break into the business as a teenager in the 80s, I've seen five decades of tremendous change, quite a bit of upheaval, and a fair amount of rebellion and betrayal. Some of which I started. It's been quite a ride, and I'm eager to share this incredible ride with everyone. Watching my creations become roles portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Zazie Beetz, Minka Kelly with many more on the way, is a crazy culmination of my comic book dreams as a kid. Over the course of my career, comic books have become a rich minefield that drives pop culture."

What Is Robservations About?

Robservations promises to provide readers with an intimate look at his journey from a pastor's son in Orange County, CA, to becoming one of the most celebrated figures in the comic book industry. From his beginnings as a teen sensation at DC Comics to becoming one of the industry's most celebrated figures, Liefeld's journey has been nothing short of legendary. In the early 90's at Marvel Comics, he introduced the world to iconic characters such as Deadpool, Cable, and X-Force, catapulting sales to unprecedented heights with record-shattering single book sales of 5 million copies of X-Force #1.

Following his groundbreaking work at Marvel, Liefeld embarked on a new chapter by co-founding Image Comics, disrupting the whole comics industry, and launching the third-largest comic publisher in history. This new comic publisher allowed creators to publish material of their own creation without giving up copyrights to those characters, something that other publishers had never offered. Liefeld found success with his creation of Youngblood, Bloodstrike, and Prophet, each selling over one million copies on their debuts, an unheard-of achievement for independent comics at the time. In 1996, Liefeld triumphantly returned to Marvel, where he revitalized iconic titles such as The Avengers and Captain America, leading to the top-selling Avengers comic in the title's history. He has remained at the top of his game since. Through his fearless approach and willingness to push boundaries, he reshaped the industry's landscape, leaving an indelible legacy that continues to influence creators today.

"BenBella is thrilled to partner with legendary comic artist Rob Liefield on the release of his memoir," BenBella CEO Glenn Yeffeth echoed. "Rob offers a glimpse into the hurdles and triumphs of his 38-year career, the origin stories of many beloved characters, and what's next for the creator of Deadpool and Cable. We're excited to help Rob share his story with fans who love comic books as much as he does."

Liefeld is represented by Liz Parker and David Boxerbaum from Verve Talent.

As mentioned above, Robservations will be released through BenBella Publishing in early 2025.

Batman Gameplay Details from Cancelled Dark Knight Game Surface Online https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/batman-gameplay-details-cancelled-dark-knight-game/ Thu, 04 Apr 2024 14:42:00 +0000 Marc Deschamps 4c5ddf39-52a6-4d03-a182-5f7a73a56725

There are few heroes that have appeared in as many video games as Batman has. While the Arkham games are the best example, there have been countless other Batman games over the years, including some that failed to see release. One such example would have been developed by Monolith Productions and set in the same universe as the Christopher Nolan films. While most of this isn't new information, the game has been getting a lot more attention on social media thanks to Twitter user SpideyRanger. SpideyRanger has compiled basically everything there is to know about the project, including information from Did You Know Gaming, developer portfolios, and more.

What Could Have Been

Originally known under the codename "Project Apollo," the Nolanverse Batman game would have featured an open world to explore by Batmobile, with combat based on the Arkham games, and designs based on The Dark Knight Trilogy. A lot of games based on movies prove to be a bust, but there were a lot of promising signs in this case. Notably, the game would have seen the debut of Monolith's Nemesis System, in which enemies are able to remember previous fights and adapt their plan of attack for the next encounter. A video of the game can be found in the Tweet embedded below.

All of this sounds incredibly promising, so what happened? Well, at the time, Rocksteady was still working on Batman: Arkham Knight, and WB Games didn't see a lot of sense in having two Batman video game franchises (oh, how things have changed in 10 years). As a result, Monolith's project evolved into Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, and was released in 2014. The game was both a critical and commercial success, and is often considered one of the best games based on the Lord of the Rings franchise. Clearly that worked in WB's favor, though Batman fans can't be blamed for wishing things had played out a little bit differently!

The Future of the Nemesis System

While the Nemesis System has not appeared in a Batman game just yet, it will appear in a future DC title. In 2021, Monolith Productions revealed that it will be making a new game starring Wonder Woman. At this time, details are incredibly slim about the game, but Monolith has confirmed that the Nemesis System will be featured. One of the biggest complaints that's been leveled at WB Games over the years is that it's too focused on Batman and his supporting cast, with not nearly enough attention paid to some of DC's other major heroes. Monolith's Wonder Woman game is a rare exception, and the talent involved is sure to get people to take notice. Hopefully the finished product will do justice to one of DC's best characters!

Do you wish this Batman game had been released? Was it the right call to make Shadow of Mordor instead? Share your thoughts with me directly on Twitter at @Marcdachamp or on Instagram at @Dachampgaming!

Supergirl: Why Craig Gillespie Is a Great Pick to Direct Woman of Tomorrow https://comicbook.com/movies/news/supergirl-craig-gillespie-direct-woman-of-tomorrow/ Thu, 04 Apr 2024 03:49:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson e5d93cd1-bd62-4d79-a232-bdb4d3a72eab

DC's Supergirl reboot has seemingly found its director, with reports indicating that Cruella and Pam & Tommy director Craig Gillespie is set to helm the film. Based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely's recent comic miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the project has already cast House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock in the titular role of Kara Zor-El / Supergirl, and is believed to begin production later this year. There's already been a lot of speculation about what significance the Supergirl movie will have as part of James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe, and those conversations are sure to grow now that Gillespie is believed to be attached.

For some DC fans, Gillespie might be a surprising pick for Supergirl, especially after there were plenty of online campaigns and suggestions of female directors for the job. (This certainly isn't the first, or probably last time, that the topic of the behind-the-scenes gender divide in superhero movies will come up, but that's a conversation for another day). But if Gillespie does ultimately end up directing DC's Supergirl reboot, he could end up being a pretty inspired choice.

Gillespie's film and TV career has already spanned a wide variety of genres and scopes, from the bizarre mumblecore of 2007's Lars and the Real Girl, to the gruesome comedy of 2011's Fright Night reboot, to the harrowing melodrama of 2016's The Finest Hours. While nothing in his filmography exactly matches the massive cosmic scale that has been teased for Supergirl, he certainly has some experience dealing with visual spectacle or CGI-driven shots. He has also exclusively worked off of screenplays that were written by other people, which could bode well for Ana Noguiera's existing Supergirl script, which Gunn has teased went "above and beyond" any of his expectations, being faithfully brought to life onscreen.

In recent years, Gillespie has been at the helm of projects -- 2017's I, Tonya, 2021's Cruella, and 2022's Pam & Tommy -- that have taken a surprising approach to the female experience. The tone of these three projects, both through their established scripts and Gillespie's direction, has been acerbic, while also successfully humanizing their larger-than-life protagonists. Each project has challenged audiences' preconceived notions about their well-known subject, whether it be a real person like I, Tonya's Tonya Harding (Margot Robbie) or Pam & Tommy's Pamela Anderson (Lily James), or an iconic Disney villain in Cruella's Cruella de Vil (Emma Stone). It also is undeniable that each project was anchored by its central female performance, with Stone being the most buzzed-about part of Cruella by far, Robbie earning an Oscar nomination, and James earning an Emmy nomination.

That brings us to Supergirl -- a movie about a character who is basically already a household name, appearing in previous movies, six seasons of a television show, multiple family-friendly cartoons, and countless pieces of merchandise. And yet, there is still so much that the world doesn't know about the heroine, both because of the confusing nature of her DC past, and because she is still regarded by many as a second-stringer to her cousin, Superman. This exact topic is what King and Evely's Woman of Tomorrow tackles wholeheartedly, showing a Kara Zor-El who traverses around the cosmos in search of a new purpose while grappling with the trauma of her past. When Gunn and Safran first announced the movie adaptation, they specifically cited that it will deliver "a much harsher and more f-cked up" portrayal of Supergirl than audiences are used to. If Gillespie does end up directing the movie, it's easy to see Kara's emotions, and the ensuing quest she goes on to help a young girl named Ruthye, being tackled in a flashy but understanding manner. As Gillespie himself told ComicBook.com around Cruella's release, he likes "trying to find that humanity and that empathy and that understanding" towards protagonists who might be otherwise seen as two-dimensional. It stands to reason he could successfully take the same approach to DC's Maid of Might.

How do you feel about Craig Gillespie directing DC's Supergirl movie? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!

DC's Supergirl Movie Finds Director https://comicbook.com/movies/news/dcs-supergirl-movie-finds-director/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 19:50:00 +0000 Matthew Aguilar b2b05f73-019a-4477-81e4-cf3d43d0751b

One of DC's more anticipated projects is its Supergirl film, which will be based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely's beloved Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow series, and now the project reportedly has a director. According to a report from Deadline, Cruella and I Tonya director Craig Gillespie is in talks to direct the film for DC Studios. The report indicates that the current plan is for DC to shoot the film for Quarter 4 after they've finished work on James Gunn's Superman movie, and it was previously revealed that Milly Alcock will be stepping into the Supergirl role.

Gillespie's previous credits include I, Tonya and Disney's live-action Cruella, which starred Emma Stone in the iconic villain role. Pam & Tommy also got quite a bit of attention in 2022, which featured Lily James and Sebastian Stan in the roles of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, and his latest directorial project was 2023's Dumb Money.

Gunn hasn't confirmed this latest bit of news yet, but he did confirm the casting of Alcock as Supergirl on Instagram. Gunn wrote "This is accurate. Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I'm incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU. Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for #Supergirl. She embodies Kara as envisioned by @tomking_tk, @bilquis and Ana Nogueira."

The project will be written by Ana Nogueira, who has a history with the character after also being attached to write a previous version of the film. That version was tied to The Flash and Sasha Calle's version, and while she was fantastic in the role, that project is no longer moving forward. Instead, this new version will be based on the hit Woman of Tomorrow story, and Gunn welcomed Nogueira to the project on Instagram.

"A hearty public welcome to Ana Nogueira to the DC Studios family," Gunn wrote. "Ana is an amazing writer whose screenplay adaptation of Woman of Tomorrow is above and beyond anything I hoped it would be. We're excited to be moving forward on this unique take on Supergirl in this beautiful, star-spanning tale."

Comic Book Reviews for This Week: 4/3/2024 https://comicbook.com/comics/news/new-comic-reviews-dc-marvel-image-april-3-2024/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 15:00:00 +0000 Chase Magnett 1810d41b-ea29-42e7-8a40-22b7ede4f15a

The review blurbs you'll find contained herein are typically supplemented in part by longform individual reviews for significant issues. This week that includes Deadpool #1, Shazam! #10, and Red Sonja: Empire of the Damned #1.

Also, in case you were curious, our ratings are simple: we give a whole or half number out of five; that's it! If you'd like to check out our previous reviews, they are all available here.

BATMAN #146

Batman #146 feels like a culmination of the many flaws and issues with much of Zdarsky's run on the title, in particular its reframing of much of Batman's origins and earlier canon. The issue kicks off with its continued centering of the Joker, this time by offering--in flashback form--how the Joker has been a pawn in a much larger grand plan that goes back as far as such notable events ad the death of Jason Todd, Barbara Gordon being attacked, and even the events of "Batman R.I.P." and how it was all a massive overarching plan to trick Zur-En-Arrh into activating Failsafe this whole time. In short, it's the worst kind of retcon and one that doesn't necessarily make much in the way of sense. Add to that the continued overcooked narrative of the Batfam and Batman's allies being unclear about what's actually going on and Bruce having to lone wolf things once again all with heavy narration throughout and you've got a tedious issue that feels both unnecessary and so try-hard at being complex it circles all the way back to superficial again. The only real "win" this issue has is the art, but it's not enough to lift the story. -- Nicole Drum

Rating: 1.5 out of 5

BIRDS OF PREY #8

While the stakes are undoubtedly still high in this Birds of Prey storyline, this issue really showcases the book's unique ability to bring a wonderful and wacky levity to the proceedings. Kelly Thompson's script allows for some delightful rapport and miscommunication, all of which help set up what the title's future has in store. With the help of Jordie Bellaire's excellent-as-ever colors, guest artists Javier Pina and David Lopez perfectly deliver the brevity, sexiness, and goofiness needed for this story. Once again, Birds of Prey is an absolute knockout. -- Jenna Anderson

Rating: 5 out of 5

BLUE BEETLE #8

The bubbling issues between Victoria Kord and Jaime Reyes have finally boiled over, and things have gotten ugly quick. "Pinnacle of Achievement" chapter one keeps the hits coming, with writer Josh Trujillo shaking up Jaime's world with important revelations abut his relationship with Khaji while also blowing up several foundational pillars along the way that will affect his purpose moving forward. The variety of changes is also impressive, with some holding bigger emotional consequences and regrets for Jaime while others are simply the purest of threats. Artist Adrian Gutierrez and colorist Will Quintana continue to work magic in this series, shifting in scale and tone with ease, though this issue in particular it's the internal monologues and pressure point emotional exchanges that really steal the show. Just when you think Blue Beetle is ready to move the heat to a low simmer, it zigs and throws everything into the pan at once, and it's proven to be a winning mixture once more. -- Matthew Aguilar

Rating: 4 out of 5

KNEEL BEFORE ZOD #4

While it still posesses a good chunk of the regality and drama of previous issues, this installment of Kneel Before Zod loses a lot of the heart that has made its journey so tragic in the first place. As Zod mourns and embarks on his quest for revenge, Joe Casey's script is stuffed to the brim with stiff expository dialogue, which is well-crafted but ultimately dire. Dan McDaid's art does have some fun flourishes, but is ultimately awkward in relation to the carnage it is displaying. While I'm definitely curious to see what the future holds for Kneel Before Zod, this issue ultimately makes the series much rockier than it could be. -- Jenna Anderson

Rating: 2.5 out of 5

POISON IVY #21

Poison Ivy #21 brings the final chapter of the titular character's origin story as well as brings us back to the present and it does a really good job of showing Pamela's evolution as well as as how, at the heart of things, she's always been the same: a woman wanting to do the right thing. We also get her first confrontation with Batman which sheds more light on Batman's nature than anything else, which makes for a bit of refreshing perspective in a universe where the heroes are often the standard bearers. Wilson does a sold job of balancing the different facets of Pamela in this issue - having her take accountability without sacrificing herself while also giving us a lot to work with as we go with the character into what feels like a new chapter. This is a standout issue of a standout series. -- Nicole Drum

Rating: 5 out of 5

SHAZAM! #10

Shazam! #10 would be an outstanding issue on its own; it delivers a succinct treatise on the fantasy of Billy's family, reminding readers why they treasure so many of their collective adventures. But it's even more promising as the start of a new spin on an already excellent ongoing series. There are too few series with naturally long runs and the current incarnation of Shazam! certainly merits one, especially considering the obviously good hands now at the helm. -- Chase Magnett

Rating: 4.5 out of 5

SUICIDE SQUAD: KILL ARKHAM ASYLUM #3

Suicide Squad: Kill Arkham Asylum #3 places its focus on Harley Quinn who finds herself wandering the asylum's corridors with Scarecrow and Ventriloquist. The miniseries' formula is firmly established and is repeated here with a small crew encountering various threats with the eventual video game protagonist persisting as Waller alludes to her grand scheme. If the repetition of this model wasn't enough to dull readers' senses, the lack of anything genuinely interesting about the new elements ensures that outcome. Harley speaks with the parlance of a middle-aged man imitating a teen on TikTok, which is every bit as irritating as you might imagine. There's nothing clever to be found in her one-liners, but she isn't fed much interesting material either. Neither Ventriloquist nor Scarecrow provide much to the story at hand as it's easy to imagine them being exchanged with any other B-list Batman villain. The issue's climax featuring Harley battling a super-powered prison guard is removed from the page, although every example of action in this issue suggests even that would be underwhelming. There's simply nothing on the page to recommend Kill Arkham Asylum to gamers or readers who would be better served seeking out other Suicide Squad comics or just playing the game. -- Chase Magnett

Rating: 1 out of 5

SUPERMAN '78: THE METAL CURTAIN #6

Earlier Superman '78 series provided sufficient material for readers to imagine the comics narrative actually being produced and building upon the legacy of Donner's films in an alternate reality; that is not the case with Superman '78: The Metal Curtain. The final issue plays out a series of superhero tropes stretched thin across its page count as Superman struggles to save Moscow's civilians from his own battle and a villain experiences a sudden and largely unmotivated reversal. Individual moments, largely contained in splashes or establishing panels play well individually, but when placed within the context of this story they make little emotional or logical sense. The Metal Curtain gestures broadly to greater aspirations but cannot evoke them within the actual narrative. The issue plays out about as well as an irrationally destructive and angry soldier suddenly discovering their heart of gold a few pages before the story ends - effectively communicated, but hollow. -- Chase Magnett

Marvel #1

ALIENS: BLACK, WHITE & BLOOD #3

The ongoing story in the pages of Alien: Black, White, and Blood from writers Collin Kelly & Jackson Lanzing and artist Michael Dowling remains its most interesting as it explores a side of storytelling this franchise would never dare even attempt in live-action, a bold and deeply political allegory that feels fresh and frightening. The other two in this month's issue vary from mediocre to unique, with Steve Foxe and Tommaso Bianchi's slightly comedic one-off being a story perfect for this format. -- Spencer Perry

THE AVENGERS #12

Earth's Mightiest Heroes finally join the X-Men's fight against Orchis amidst the "Fall of X." Tony Stark and the X-Men's scheming has mostly taken place in Invincible Iron Man, but it's time for Marvel's ongoing Avengers series to tie-in. What's helpful about this type of tie-in is it takes the main story beats and adapts them to the Avengers title, focusing on M.O.D.O.K. and 3-D MAN as Orchis antagonists. The Avengers work well together, and the issue even references events in the new Captain Marvel series. -- Tim Adams

CAPTAIN AMERICA #8

There might be a good idea hidden deep down in the soul of this Captain America run, but very little makes it to the surface. Two-thirds of this issue are bogged down in an incoherent battle scene overlayed with exposition and a couple of very out of place movie references. Ultimately, it doesn't really feel like this story has anything to do with Steve Rogers, he's just thrust into a supernatural situation because he has a good heart. -- Charlie Ridgely

DEADPOOL #1

Deadpool #1 didn't grab me. But the comics world is better off with an ongoing series centered around the Merc with a Mouth. This may not have broken any new ground, but it delivers on what it's aiming for and readers will certainly receive a few laughs. Sometimes that's enough. -- Connor Casey

DOCTOR STRANGE #14

The worst part of the latest Doctor Strange story arc is that it only lasted two issues. MacKay and Ferry teamed up for two of the Doctor Strangiest issues imaginable and now it's all over. Naturally, the pacing was a bit too fast given an entire arc was told between this issue and last month's, but the concept is such a hoot, it doesn't even matter. Maybe someday this team will be able to revisit Cobolorum. - Adam Barnhardt

THE IMMORTAL THOR #9

The Immortal Thor #9 sees the furious God of Thunder paying a visit to the Roxxon offices for a showdown with the company's CEO, the Minotaur, Dario Agger. However, it seems Thor has fallen into a trap as Agger, Enchantress, and Skurge launch their master plan. In this moment, the themes that have cropped up in Immortal Thor's first eight issues--Gaea opening the door to the Utgard gods because she's pissed as a metaphor for climate change, Roxxon buying Marvel Comics and testing what it really means for superheroes to be our modern mythology--coalesce. That the issue sidesteps overindulging the psychology of a CEO who brings the planet a step closer to the brink with every decision they make by boiling it down to an addiction to power and "winning" summed up by "the numbers going up makes me feel good" is a stroke of brilliance. The Immortal Thor is now verging on becoming fully metatextual, a rumination on the compromises made to turn a god of myth into a marketable superhero and the responsibilities that such an icon has accrued since comics have gone from being the disposable entertainment of certain relatively small subcultures to a dominant global entertainment force. The Immortal Thor #9 sets the stage for a compelling (and action packed if this issue is anything to go by) rumination on what that means. -- Jamie Lovett

THE SENSATIONAL SHE-HULK #7

While Jen herself takes a bit of a backseat in this issue, Sensational She-Hulk continues to build a delightful and meaningful arc. Rainbow Rowell's script folds together some Marvel deep cuts into a heartfelt modern context, perfectly accented by Ig Guara and Dee Cunniffe's work in creating the moody cosmic club that is the issue's setting. I have faith this is going to culminate in some great storytelling, both for Jen and for those around her. -- Jenna Anderson

SPIDER-MAN: SHADOW OF THE GOBLIN #1

J.M. DeMatteis should be recognized as a writer who has laid the groundwork for some seriously strong Spidey stories in the past, and Shadow of The Green Goblin looks to expand on said groundwork. Joined by Michael Sta. Maria this time around, we are given a strong story that follows Peter around a month following the death of Uncle Ben. Ultimately, this issue's biggest strength, and greatest weakness, is its adherence to Spidey-lore as those looking for a story that elicits that 1960s feel will find what they're looking for here. Unfortunately, the biggest hang-up is the fact that this book would hit harder if you were to read proceeding chapters from DeMatteis that came out almost decades prior to this one. In some panels, readers are asked to pick up a copy of Amazing Spider-Man Family #3, a spin-off that came out in 2008. This isn't to say the story can't be read on its own as it still has serious merit, it just would have helped tremendously had Marvel released the past issues featuring the Proto-Goblin in recent memory to get fans up to speed. There's still some amazing character work here and J.M.'s knowledge of all things Spidey shines through, but I wish I could have scored this higher at the end of the day. -- Evan Valentine

STAR WARS #45

The kidnapping of Mon Mothma prevents the trial of Lando Calrissian from moving forward as anticipated, and while the legal proceedings might face some obstacles, not everyone is keen to wait for Mothma's rescue to continue scrutinizing Lando. Two issues into this event, we're still largely impressed by how we haven't gotten a storyline quite like this in the galaxy far, far away, as the franchise's legal system is often overlooked or explored in the most extreme distributions of justice. It feels akin to something like Law & Order: Star Wars, which is sure to delight fans and at least intrigue plenty of others. The drawback is that the characters do a lot of telling more than a lot of showing, so it's heavy on dialogue in a way that can be overwhelming, but even if the event doesn't end up being as explosive as others, it will likely end up offering more insight into the mindset of characters we've known for quite some time. However, it's possible that it was just these first two issues in the arc that set the stage for the adventure and that there will be more revealing twists and turns right around the corner. -- Patrick Cavanaugh

VENGEANCE OF THE MOON KNIGHT #4

The identity of the mysterious imposter Moon Knight has been revealed, though in typical Jed MacKay fashion, that's only part of the journey for answers. Many questions remain, and especially in regards to how it relates to members of Marc's team and their history. There's also a level of welcome surprise that it's not at all who you think, though perhaps the most impressive part of it all is that the reveal isn't the show stealer. That award goes to the continuing deep dive into the mind of Hunter's Moon and his ongoing grief of Marc, though it's not really that simple either, which is part of why it all works. Alessandro Cappuccio and Rachelle Rosenberg are one of the best teams in comics for a reason, and though there aren't as many fight sequences here to show that off, the shots of Tigra and Hunter's Moon searching the city are so stunning that you quickly forget. Those last few pages also give the team a chance to flex, and they don't disappoint. It will be intriguing to see where this goes, as that will be the true test, but as as a reveal and continue character study, Vengeance of the Moon Knight #4 is another home run. -- Matthew Aguilar

VENOM #32

Al Ewing gets this era of Venom back on track with an issue that not only ties itself into the larger crossover happening now but the plot he's been building for nearly thirty issues. As fun as Ewing makes it all, the MVP is artist Ken Lashley and color artist Romulo Fajardo Jr., who both deliver some of the grossest symbiote action you have ever seen along with clean and concise images that flow like water. This is the sort of galaxy-brained Venom story that makes the character stand apart. -- Spencer Perry

X-MEN #33

It's beginning to feel a bit like X-Men is stretching out its finale to ensure it makes it to the upcoming milestone 700th issue. Each issue seems to bring a new climax, with this one resolving some a few subplots left unaddressed by other recent issues. Gerry Duggan for finding a way to tie the mutant community in Madripoor, Ms. Marvel's integration into the X-Men, and Doctor Doom's X-Men team together in a way that feels organic, even if it equally feels like vamping for time. That the Fall of X seems into on taking the focus off Orchis as the main villains behind Krakoa's downfall and instead put the focus on the common enemy of artificial intelligence is less inspiring as it seems a way of dodging having to make a bolder statement about the themes of the Krakoan age. There's also dissonance between Cyclops' attempt at finding common ground with the likes of Dr. Alia Gregor and Wolverien merciless dismembering the Orchis rank and file he encounters in the Morlock tunnels. And yet, if you're going to have Wolverine do what he does best, there are few better artists to depict it than Joshua Cassara, and he does not disappoint. -- Jamie Lovett

CRAVE #5

There's something about Crave that feels like wasted potential. Despite showing glimpses of brilliancy, most of the story has felt hollow and empty. Crave #5 might be the emptiest yet, with characters making rash decisions and even reversing course on the development of previous issues. A good chunk of that is because the story doesn't know what it wants to be; it wants to tell a cautionary tale, only to zig a different direction. It wants to explore themes about the dangers of social media, only to zag wildly off the beaten path. Now racing into its final issue, Crave is all too directionless. -- Adam Barnhardt

DEEP CUTS #6

Deep Cuts' finale provides yet another electrifying issue, while weaving in a slew of connections and echoes to its larger narrative. Kyle Higgins and Joe Clark's script introduces a number of new characters in 1977, as they grapple with the past and future of jazz music in some illuminating and personal ways. Toby Cypress' art and Igor Monti's color work complement everything effortlessly, taking us on a trip around the world in an angular, but charming way. From beginning to end, Deep Cuts has been a lovely series, and this finale easily seals that reputation. -- Jenna Anderson

Each wind up in front of a strange Coachman who offers them a way to break the curse, although each curse broken comes with a price. Amy Chase and Casey Gilly (along with a quartet of artists) guide us through various Domains, showing us the cost the everyman suffers for living there. I liked that the Darklords often cast a shadow over their respective realm but never are the focus, making them seem more monstrous and dangerous as a result. This is a fun horror comic, framed with a new take on Ravenloft that hearkens back to the terrifying morality tales found in old EC comics. -- Christian Hoffer

GEIGER #1

Geiger #1 provides readers with an accessible debut issue for the returning series as its Ghost Machine launches a wide-array of new creator-owned titles at Image Comics. The premise is easily navigated with a familiar anti-hero wandering a familiar post-apocalyptic landscape like a gunslinger in a spaghetti Western. He even arrives complete with a loyal dog and squire-of-sorts as companions. There's no denying the power of Gary Frank's pencils which wring every bit of grit from this desolate landscape and provide plenty of gorey impact when Geiger unleashes his radioactive powers; readers coming to Geiger #1 purely for new pages of Frank's artwork will not be disappointed. They're ultimately the only draw found in this issue, though, with characters who are hardly sketched in beyond the broadest confines of tragedy and encounters that offer nothing particularly gripping in the way of conflict, stakes, or thematic notes. It's a story readers have encountered many, many times before and the stellar pencils and inks displaying its banalities cannot counter them. -- Chase Magnett

GHOSTLORE #9

Ghostlore #9 sees the series come full circle, in a sense. Harmony and her friends attempt to get away from the coming storm only to find themselves hunted by Shane while her father continues his quest to find her. Their paths collide, but not before there are some revelations for Harmony and some loss. Overall, this is a good issue, though it feels a bit like it might move a little too fast, which leads to concerns that we're rushing towards a final showdown of sorts. Also, the art in the issue--particularly in terms of Harmony's father--seems to suggest that something is off, though textually it's hard to determine if there is support for that conclusion. It's still a good read. -- Nicole Drum

GODZILLA VS. THE MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS II #1

Godzilla vs. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers delivered the bombastic monster vs giant robot adventure it promised, and after a successfully round one, it's time for round two. Writer Cullen Bunn hooked me from jump with its White Ranger and Saba focus, and he keeps the issue moving with big action set pieces by artist Baldemar Rivas and colorist Andrew Dalhouse. There are some stellar sequences, including several involving White Ranger and the Tigerzord, and Johanna Nattalie's lettering makes those moments pop off the page. There are other scenes though where it can be difficult to sort out exactly what's happening, with everything sort of blending together. The ending of the book promises big things that are perfectly in line with the premise's strengths, so I've got high hopes that this series will end up being just as fun as the first one. -- Matthew Aguilar

HACK/SLASH: KILL YOUR IDOLS #1

Previously published in the pages of the Image! 30th anniversary anthology, this crossover of Hack/Slash with classic Image characters spends the bulk of its narrative being more appealing to fans of the latter than the former. That said, writer Tim Seeley has a fun ace up his sleeve that brings it all together and concludes in a place that feels very Hack/Slash. Artist Stefano Caselli (credited with Dan Leister) has the difficult task of blending both the specific aesthetic of Hack/Slash along with characters like Superpatriot and Bloodstrike, a tall mountain to climb but he does an actual fun job with it. -- Spencer Perry

KAYA #17

The penultimate installment of Kaya's third arc presents a classic out of the frying pan and into the fire scenario as Kaya seeks to save Jin while the city itself prepares for a civil war. Much of the focus is on the first half of that conflict with Jin falling ever deeper into a seemingly fatal nightmare as Kaya struggles to find him a cure. Both sequences are thrilling with the solid lines and colors of Kaya's experience in the world contrasted against the exaggerated forms and dreamlike visions of Jin's own trials. The dreamlike images he encounters provides fantasy readers plenty to consider as they cast prophetic suggestions about, while Kaya's more immediate concerns are plenty thrilling in their own right. What's most impressive is how effectively Wes Craig alters his own style and balances three distinct narratives so that they enhance one another and build toward an irresistible climax next month. -- Chase Magnett

THE LAST MERMAID #2

The Last Mermaid #2 is a swift read, owing to its sparse dialog. The issue sees the series' protagonist making a mad dash for cliff and discovering a vast (by post-apocalyptic standards) body of untainted water. Most of the issue is then spent with the mermaid luxuriating in this aquatic oasis before discovering that there's a reason the deep lake hasn't already been claimed by other scavengers. Derek Kirk Kim expertly paces the pivot from respite to danger, a single well-composed splash turning the wide-open underwater scape that once represented a safe space into a symbol of isolation and vulnerability. It's another stellar issue that will especially appeal to fans of comics that emphasize visual storytelling over verbose narration. -- Jamie Lovett

LOVE EVERLASTING #14

The slow-motion excavation of the dreamlike engineers curating Joan's never-ending series of romances has proven particularly intriguing across the past several issues and Love Everlasting #14 makes the mystery as enticing as ever. Much like the series' first arc accelerated Joan's transition between different scenarios, so does the Cowboy's although his consistently violent perspective proves to have a darkly comical edge. Although the issue's final sequence promises some clarity, especially given the cliffhanger reveal, it's the Cowboy's own mental state that offers the most interest here. His narrative and memories come into conflict with the pre-arranged nature of this seemingly endless cycle and suggests that Joan is far from the only individual trapped in this hellish construct. Whatever answers are coming, Love Everlasting #14 ensures readers will be resting on the edge of their seats pondering what comes next. -- Chase Magnett

MINOR THREATS: THE FASTEST WAY DOWN #1

Minor Threats is back with a vengeance, with The Fastest Way Down refusing to pull a single punch with its over-the-top (yet delightful) debut. Even though this series features the worst of the worst, it's clear how much Oswalt and Blum care about superhero comics. The duo's superb handling of this supervillain ensemble is second to none, and Hepburn's lineart continues to shine as he gives a dark and dreary script a surprising amount of light. -- Adam Barnhardt

MORTAL TERROR #3

Christopher Golden and Tim Lebbon's wildly unique take on Dracula continues to impress, especially as it delves even further from the source material and forces itself to bend into new shapes and strive for new storylines. This month the series manages to find a surprising blend of what fans expect and how it can surprise them, perhaps in its most interesting issue yet. Art by Peter Bergting, with colors by Chris O'Halloran, is jaw-dropping at times, with such a unique mood created among its pages that there's really nothing else like it on comic book stands. -- Spencer Perry

THE ONE HAND #3

The One Hand #3 escalates and deepens the mystery that Detective Nassar is investigating. The fate of the person Nassar previously put away for as the "One Hand Killer" suggests a conspiracy afoot, and the hints being dropped suggest it may be much bigger than a single serial killer. The book's visuals continue to soak in the noir atmosphere, channeling foreboding as the pieces of the puzzle start to come together, desolation as the scale of the conspiracy is hinted at, and pure shock and horror at the latest grisly act of violence. If The One Hand hadn't already fully sunk its teeth into its readers, The One Hand #3 will surely do the trick. -- Jamie Lovett

RANGER ACADEMY #6

Ranger Academy always exudes relatability, but issue #6 might just be the most relatable issue of the series to date. Writer Maria Ingrande Mora's cast is simply delightful, and the arrival of a parents weekend school party and dance is a brilliant vehicle in which to spotlight the group's strengths. Everyone has been in a situation where your friends and your parents collide, and there's a sense of nostalgia that Mora, artist Jo Mi-Gyeong, and colorist Joana LaFuente capture perfectly throughout. Lindy is the glue that holds the group together, but everyone has their own spark to bring to the group's dynamic, setting up one particular character that longtime Ranger fans will love seeing in the mix. Tula is the biggest wild card, but that's by design, and the revelation towards the end teases a major shakeup that will tie-in to Sage's larger arc as well. Ranger Academy has been an absolute delight, but issue #6 is making a strong case for best issue so far. -- Matthew Aguilar

RED SONJA: EMPIRE OF THE DAMNED #1

For better or for worse, Red Sonja has become a profoundly malleable character, to the point where she can sustain multiple miniseries and creative teams at a single time. As much as that publishing trend can lead to work that challenges the conventions of comics or the expectations surrounding a female heroine, it can also lead to work that is frustratingly unremarkable. Unfortunately, Red Sonja: Empire of the Damned #1 falls into the latter category and is unable to be saved by the potential of its premise or the reputation of its creative team. While there's a chance Red Sonja: Empire of the Damned could ultimately wow me, this debut issue doesn't provide much confidence. -- Jenna Anderson

REDCOAT #1

Redcoat is one of the wildest, most unbelievable comic books I've read in some time, and I'm still trying to figure out if that's a good thing. The creative team is a legendary one for the comic book world as Geoff Johns and Bryan Hitch have teamed up to create a brand new universe focusing on characters with a "folklore" like status. In Redcoat, we are presented with wild concepts such as the Founding Fathers being sorcerers, Benjamin Franklin undergoing a magical seance to become a god, and a "red coat" named Simon Pure time hopping. Hitch is doing some of his best career work here, and Johns once again is able to cram a whole lot into a single issue. It's an interesting start to a new universe in "Ghost Machine" and there are enough grapes on the vine here to see where this bonkers story is headed. -- Evan Valentine

ROOK: EXODUS #1

One of the proclamations of Ghost Machine is that their comic books will have the best art on the stands, and that is definitely the case with Rook: Exodus. At first glance it appears to be all about the art, but the story winds up being compelling and interesting as well. I'm left wondering more about Rook's past, not only on Earth but also on Exodus. We've only seen glimpses of this new, strange world, but there is a lot more to discover along with the reader. I'm curious to see what other wardens and animals we meet. -- Tim Adams

THE SACRIFICERS #7

The Sacrificers #7 gives readers a glimpse of the immediate consequences to the first arc's explosive conclusion as the world's established order begins coming apart with terrible ramifications for both its people and ruling class of gods. These images of disaster and terror are splendidly developed on the page with some of the series' most effective splash pages to date. However, for a series focused on two protagonists, the overall pacing between monthly installments is less than propulsive. Only one of the central characters is reintroduced and their return is primarily characterized in broad narrative captions covering well drawn, but insubstantial steps forward. There's a sense that The Sacrificers #7 is re-establishing the story but doesn't manage to finish that task within a single issue. -- Chase Magnett

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG: FANG THE HUNTER #3

Sonic the Hedgehog: Fang the Hunter was already a colorful and comical romp with three minor characters possessing plenty of personality, but issue #3 ties their misadventures into the broader narrative of IDW's Sonic line. As Fang and his companions negotiate their fate with Eggman, they receive a new task - one that showcases how effective these bounty hunter-type characters can be in their roles. It leads to both an interesting climactic scenario and one that frames the trio clearly as protagonists worth rooting for. The consistent cartooning of the series is utilized very effectively here, especially in the final action sequence with cuteness, comedy, and tension often intersecting to deliver plenty of exciting sequences and gags capable of eliciting an actual laugh. It seems like after Fang the Hunter #4 arrives, Sonic readers may find themselves eagerly anticipating when this coyote will next appear. -- Chase Magnett

Before getting to town, Yukichi's well-intentioned impulses get him and Usagi involved with a mysterious swordsman whose pet crow makes him the spitting image of a figure from Japanese history. While Gen and fellow bounty hunter Stay Dog simply see this person as a job, Usagi Yojimbo's recent adventures are laced with enough magic, monsters, and other oddities to leave readers wondering about the truth of the swordman's origin. Void Rivals pits Solila and Darak against a new terrifying threat in the desert, one who is stronger, faster, and more deadly than the two warriors combined. Netflix's Dead Boy Detectives Trailer Confirms Sandman Connection https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/netflixs-dead-boy-detectives-trailer-confirms-sandman-connection/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 14:24:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 313a4fb1-0e10-4b12-9313-b46078839316

Netflix has released the first trailer for Dead Boy Detectives, a new series from Warner Bros. Television that was originally being developed for Max, but ultimately has landed at Netflix and is being framed as part of the Sandman universe." That tracks with the characters' comic book backstory, but fans didn't know whether, or to what extent, that would be acknowledged in-story or in the marketing for the show. The premise is fairly simple: a pair of young detectives a la the Hardy Boys or something similar, have cheated death, and now have the capacity to interact with the living and the dead, allowing them a chance to help the dead find a conclusion to their mysteries.

That's an idea that has been iterated on successfully on TV before, with shows like Pushing Daisies and iZombie riffing on it, and even CBS's Ghosts tackling elements of it, although obviously not in quite as serious a way. The series also brings in Supernatural veteran Ruth O'Connell, proving that she'll never be more than a degree of separation or two away from John Constantine.

You can see it below.

You can also read the official synopsis for the series below.

Do you have a pesky ghost haunting you? Has a demon stolen your core memories? You may want to ring the Dead Boy Detectives.

Meet Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri), "the brains" and "the brawn" behind the Dead Boy Detectives agency. Teenagers born decades apart who find each other only in death, Edwin and Charles are best friends and ghosts... who solve mysteries. They will do anything to stick together - including escaping evil witches, Hell and Death herself. With the help of a clairvoyant named Crystal (Kassius Nelson) and her friend Niko (Yuyu Kitamura), they are able to crack some of the mortal realm's most mystifying paranormal cases.

As part of The Sandman Universe for Netflix and based on the beloved comic series from Neil Gaiman, DEAD BOY DETECTIVES was developed for television by Steve Yockey, who serves as co-showrunner alongside Beth Schwartz and is brought to you by Greg Berlanti. Jeremy Carver and Sarah Schechter also serve as executive producers. The series also stars Jenn Lyon, Briana Cuoco, Lukas Gage, David Iacono and Ruth Connell.

Dead Boy Detectives will debut on Netflix on April 25.

Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City LEGO Set Will Be Available To Everyone Tonight https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/batman-the-animated-series-lego-set-april-4-general-release/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 13:19:00 +0000 Sean Fallon cb9882ef-3bcb-4532-8840-b3048432f00f ghdxenfxyssaalfxk.jpg

LEGO is celebrating 85 years of DC Comics' Batman and they've chosen what many consider to be the best version of the character to do it. Of course, we're talking about Batman: The Animated Series, and the first LEGO set inspired by the show probably isn't what you would have expected. Using 4120 pieces, fans can build a 3D recreation of the Gotham City skyline complete with loads of Easter eggs. The set will also include minifigures of Batman, Catwoman, The Joker, and Harley Quinn.

Features of the Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City (76271) LEGO set include brick-built locations and from the series such as Gotham City Court, Arkham Asylum, Wayne Manor, the Batcave and more. You'll also be able to view what's happening inside these locations thanks to 15 removable panels. Naturally, Batmobile and Batwing vehicles are included in the display along with a Bat Signal.

ghdxenfxyassalfxk.jpg

Note that the LEGO Gotham City set can be mounted on a wall or stood on a surface using a flip-out stand when complete, making it something of a hybrid between a LEGO Art set and the Batman Batcave shadowbox that they released last year. It will also come with two sets of instructions for those that would enjoy sharing the build with another Batman fan.

Already sold on it? Of course you are. LEGO Insiders got first crack at this set for an early release window that started on April 1st, but It will be available to the general public starting on April 3rd / 4th at 9pm PT / 12am ET right here at the LEGO Shop priced at $299.99. You can find more upcoming LEGO releases here in the "Coming Soon" section. After the launch, they will shift here in the "Available Now" section. A full list of new LEGO sets for March 1st 2024 can be found here. Of course, this Batman: The Animated Series set won't be the only way that Warner Bros. Discovery celebrates 85 years of Batman in 2024. Expect many new announcements and product drops, which may or may not include additional Batman LEGO sets.

Batman: The Animated Series spawned the DC Animated Universe -- the shared continuity of Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League, Batman Beyond, and Justice League Unlimited -- and ended its original run after 85 episodes in 1995. In 1997, the series continued with another 24 episodes as The New Batman Adventures, featuring Gotham City's crime-fighting team of Batman, the Tim Drake Robin (Mathew Valencia), Batgirl (Tara Strong), and Nightwing (Loren Lester).

The Penguin: Colin Farrell "Couldn't Believe" How Dark Series Gets https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/the-penguin-colin-farrell-spoilers-dark-series-the-batman/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 03:52:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 6faa0345-818d-408a-803a-c75f726718ea

The Penguin is set to arrive on Max at some point this fall, continuing the individual story arc of Oswald Cobblepott / Penguin (Colin Farrell) from The Batman. The live-action series has already debuted its first trailer, which has helped it become pretty highly-anticipated amongst DC fans. In a recent interview with HeyUGuys, Farrell further previewed what audiences can expect from The Penguin, teasing that even he got surprised by how dark the series' tone is.

"Tons of violence, abject darkness and a man and a great struggle to try and claw his way to the top," Farrell revealed. "You know, there's a power grab in Gotham now. It's dark, man. Lauren LeFranc with her room of writers wrote eight extraordinary episodes. I mean, just really, really bold stuff. I couldn't believe that it got as dark as it gets... It would be a Hard R [rating]."

What Is The Penguin About?

While plot details surrounding The Penguin are currently under wraps, it is expected to take place in the aftermath of the events of The Batman.

"We are thrilled to bring audiences a new version of this iconic DC character that they have never seen before," Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content, HBO Max, said in a statement when the show was announced. "It is incredible to be working with Matt, Dylan and Lauren on continuing this story and to see Colin take his already exceptional performance in 'The Batman' to the next level."

"Colin exploded off the screen as the Penguin in 'The Batman,' and having the chance to thoroughly explore the inner life of that character on HBO Max is an absolute thrill," The Batman director Matt Reeves echoed. "Dylan and I are so excited to work with Lauren in continuing Oz's story as he grabs violently for power in Gotham."

"I have long been a fan of the world of 'The Batman,' and Matt's film is such a powerful and bold entry into the canon. I am excited and humbled to continue telling stories in the grimy world of Gotham City - and what better excuse to channel my inner villain than to tell the story of Oswald Cobblepot? I am thrilled to work with Colin, Matt, Dylan, 6th & Idaho, Warners, and HBO Max as we work to bring this story to the screen," said showrunner Lauren LeFranc.

Who Is in the Cast of The Penguin?

The cast of The Penguin includes and Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni, as well as Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Deirdre O'Connell.

"The only thing I had an idea was that I wasn't nearly getting to explore the character as much as I wanted to," Farrell explained in a recent interview with Variety. "Because there was all this extraordinary work done by [makeup artists] Mike Marino and Mike Fontaine and his team, and I just thought it was the tip of the iceberg, pardon the pun, that we were getting to do the six or seven scenes that we did in the film. I was grateful for them, but I wanted more."
